Good job Jamflex.

Games of Chance

The first topic is games of chance – also known as hosting, flower games or dicing. This has been a major topic of concern for players, with as much (if not more) demand for action from the Old School community. As you may have seen in the news post on the main RuneScape site, we’ve added a new rule against player-run games of chance, and as with all rules this applies across the main and Old School games. To quote the rule “You must not advertise, organize, promote or participate in player-run games of chance, where game money or items are staked on the outcome of a random activity.“ Players caught doing this will receive a strike against their account, escalating from muting to temp banning to a last-resort permanent ban.

Today we’ve also patched the Old School game with a couple of tweaks to support this new rule. A right-click Report abuse shortcut has been added so it is quicker to report any players who are breaking the rules. We recommend players use the “Encouraging Rule Breaking” entry to report players involved with games of chance. We’ve also tweaked the behavior of items such as mithril seeds and toy horses so they can not readily be used for games of chance. As an urgent policy-level change to the game rules and relating to player safety, this update is not being put to a poll. I felt it was important to make the Old School game equally resistant to those wanting to run games of chance, so that it would not be vulnerable to hosts looking for an alternate venue to ply their now illicit trade. We’ve listened to the very passionate calls to stamp out hosted games of chance, and hope the community will rally around this and help us keep it out of the game for good.

I saw it done by like...3-4 people in the middle of Varrock on trade worlds.

Other than that, I never saw it. Oh Dear the horrible spam!! *walks west 10 spaces* "SELLING LOBSTERS SELLING LOBSTERS SELLING LOBSTERS SELLING LOBSTERS SELLING LOBSTERS"

The ones that payed out weren't scamming, and I really don't see why it was a big deal at all

Then why are players stupid for participating?

Because the odds are against them. (just like in real life lottery)

How is this different from a mercher taking advantage of the stupidity of people to sell his goods for personal gain at a higher price?

Because gambling is addictive and getting lowballed by merchers is not.

If you get cleaned, I think your addiction is soon over.

No, they just beg for more money and start it all over again.

Or they buy it from a gold farmer. I've had parents contact me through my website with stories about how their kid either stole their credit card, or tried to, to purchase RS gold so they could continue gambling it with clans after they got cleaned out. Given that so many gambling clans were selling gold, they were probably buying their own gold back. The only positive aspect that comes out of it is that they've identified an addiction very early on in the child's life and can get them treated for it before it becomes a problem.

Oh no! Someone was making money off stupid players!!

MAKE A RULE AGAINST IT

Gambling is an addiction, it is a disorder. Like any other impulse-control disorder, it doesn't manifest because the person is "stupid," and it doesn't go away just because you ask it to, and it certainly doesn't justify someone taking advantage of the addict. It must be monitored for the rest of the addict's life because, regardless of what steps they take to rehabilitate, the impulse will never go away and the addict can fall right back into their habit at any point.

And shame on you for thinking that "stupid" people are open season to be taken advantage of. Any person who was raised halfway decently would tell you that a person doesn't have it coming because they are "stupid" or trusting of others.

Addiction is an issue only if you allow yourself to become engrossed by them in the first place.

Smoking is addicting.

Shame on stores for selling cigarettes and taking advantage of these people!!

Nah, they're stupid for doing it even once in the first place.

The "trust" thing is a completely different subject. If the person doesn't pay out, then that's just scamming in the first place.

But I see nothing wrong with the people hosting games who DO pay out.

It has no effect on my gameplay in any way.

But I don't support the rule because I find it unfair to the hosts who were honest about it.

They have no negative effect on regular players. The only people it hurts are the ones who lost their money to them.

1. Constant spam in the Grand Exchange in many worlds.

2. Dramatic rise in gold farming.

3. Account theft by hosts to get more money (similar to gold farmers)

4. Economic damage by a few people hoarding a ton of money by buying up rares and expensive equipment.

5. Further economic damage because of massive amounts of money funneling around between players very quickly.

6. The money Jagex loses for every gambling addict who gets cleaned out and quits because of it

7. The question of gambling laws in certain countries impacting Jagex's operations there (there are countries whose laws include gambling with non-real money)

8. Negative impacts on the community by creating what is almost a criminal underbelly that was even at one point accused of paying off player moderators to mute competing hosts.

Addiction is an issue only if you allow yourself to become engrossed by them in the first place.

Predisposition to addiction is wired into your brain, and with the exception of some major traumatic event, is generally there from birth. People with impulse control disorders are born with it and will die with it, and it is something that if the person never entered a casino in their life, they would end up getting hooked on to something else, like watching cars drive by and making bets on what the color/model of the next car would be. I agree with your bit about not starting smoking, but smoking addiction sets in once you've actually started smoking, and people have varying levels of predisposition to drug addiction as well which is why you hear about certain drugs being a gateway to harder substances, while another person can snort coke recreationally but can stop at any time without feeling withdrawal symptoms because his brain isn't wired to form a dependency on it.

I have said that, had they not become completely out of control, that RuneScape's gambling systems might have been a positive aspect of the game because in many ways it is essentially an early screening tool in what is a relatively safe place (IE: not losing real money) for gambling addiction. You won't "cure" gambling addiction, but it can be rehabilitated through therapy or just having someone to look over your shoulder and keep you from falling back down the rabbit hole (in this case, a parent). The way I see it, I'd rather someone's addiction present itself in a safe environment than decades later when its festered and the guy bankrupts himself in some casino in Vegas.

If you really want my opinion, however, Jagex's response is once again a lie and their motive has nothing to do with scamming or won't somebody think of the children. It took sixteen months (Nov '11) between Jagex removing the dice because they didn't want players running gambling rings, and when they finally made it against the rules. It's like Jagex not implementing dramatic trade restrictions until late 2007 when their bank threatened to stop accepting ALL credit card payments because of all of the chargebacks because gold farmers were using stolen credit cards to pay for membership and Jagex was letting them run rampant. There are two reasons Jagex buckles down on the community: For the benefit of their bank and at the demands of their lawyers.
