I want to train Defence up, using mage.

Title explains it really. I get the gist that Mage now means you can train Defence faster than if you melee, so that is what i want to do. My question is how to go about it, where's most effective etc, what should i be wearing etc?

Stats:

All Melee's: 60

Mage: 99

Access to Ovl's and Ancients.

I've got about 10/15mil i can spend, but dont want to go absolutely overboard.

So, any ideas?

Rock barrage on dags on waterbirth. Its cheap enough to use.

Cool. I'll give it a try. Would blood barrage be a good option, from a healing point of view?

Nope - as you said, you have Overloads and Ancient Curses - Soulsplit is more than enough to keep you at max lp. You'll need to run around a bit, luring the Daggs to get maximum damage spread (resulting in maximum exp/h), rotating between the east and west spots either side of the central rocky structure in the middle of the room, as their aggro will die after a while.

As for gear, your best 2h Stave and Ahrims or up should be fine (presuming you have at least this).

If you fancy it, Daggs in Wbirth are great for crimson charms - so its a great place to collect them while you train. You can also take a bonecrusher for added prayer experience.

I haven't got curses yet, only magicks (curses is next on the to do list). Assuming i do get curses, i'll only have to pulse S/S every now and then to get the healing, given i'll be hitting 7-8-9 at a time?

In terms of staves, Polypore's best right, as i have not got levels for SoL, and Arma's price is probably out of range atm? I've bought Ahrims in prep for when i get to 70, have Infinity, which is best up until then as far as i know, excluding 3rd Age.

A bunyip should be plenty of healing and yeah, 1 cast with SS every 10 minutes should do you.

  • 4 weeks later...

[sorry to bring up a dead topic, but figured it's preferable to starting a new one]

Isn't a wand + book better than a staff? More specifically to me, SoA or master wand + whatever book (mage's I suppose)?

And I'm guessing the setup should be with void over mage gear?

Master wand isn't very good, the reason people look at staves is the prices for wands sky rockets when you get to tier 70+. Void would probably be best.

But for the purpose of Dagganoths, Wands and Book combo beats Staves due to Momentum and less overkill of dual wielding, but you do burn more runes while dual wielding (twice as much), whether that is an issue or not is up to you.

Master Wand and Grifolic orb is more than sufficient for Dagannoths, higher tier wands/book doesn't benefit dagannoths due to how accurate master wands are on them (but master wand indeed have limited use outside of Dagannoths, since most higher level creatures have higher tier, and thus more resistant to t60).

Also if you have the tokens to spare, Twisted Skull (or demon horn will do fine, all 3 prayer restore necks does the same with regards to normal bones), bone crusher and (if you are also collecting charms) charming imp are all good buys.

The concept of overkill in RS is laughable, how does hitting higher then you need to slow you down at all? It doesn't, and from what I understand staves have a dmg boost to even them out with DW. Which, in theory is better because if you can take the dags down in less hits, you have new ones moving in faster.

Did you try? I did and I agree with Chenw.

Please think before you ask a question. If you ask the right question, its much more likely you get the answer you are looking for :)

Imagine a dagannoth has 1500 LP, your spells do 1750 with DW, 3500 with Staff, staff attacks twice as slowly as DW. The extra damage that could have gotten to the next kill is completely wasted when you are using the staff. This is an exaggerated example, but the point is still clear, slower attacks at the same dps means the damage is not as spread out as evenly, and hence will always result in slower kills because much damage has gone to waste.(or is more likely to go to waste).

If every dagganoth was as hard to kill as QBD, then staff is of course at least equal with DW. Not with dagganoths in current state.

Staff is guarenteed to kill slower than DW of the equivalent tier when it comes killing things that have low HP compared to the damage you are dealing out.

It's comparable to the reason accuracy gets less valuable as you increase it past your opponents defence (of course health tends to be much higher than max hit, and max def roll tends to be lower than max atk roll with the current balance). It is also well-established, at least since Dharoking ape atoll monkeys, there have been people who brought whips to finish off skeletons, increasing xp/h by 5-10% iirc.

Hitting more targets means more overkill.

Think about it like this:

With a high-hitting weapon, there is more variation between hits, so the probability of one monster dying well before another is increased. When that happens, you get less xp per cast, because you attack fewer monsters. With a lower hitting weapon, the hits are more consistent, so it is less likely for a monster to die before the rest, which means more xp per cast.

Id have to agree with chen myself.

The master wand is cheap enough - accuracy is good enough for dagganoths, so why overpay? Personally I use master wand and grifolic orb, and it got me 140m magic exp so far....

All the high profile magers i've seen there camping for exp are using wand + book.
