Boston Marathon Murders

When the white male is shot dead, the event is over and we don't need to worry anymore. When we're still looking for a bombing suspect two days later, there's reason to worry. Hence terrorist. Also we still have no idea the agenda behind the attack, hence terrorist.

Following that logic, once the suspect in this case is caught in this case he/she will no longer be a terrorist?

Personally I consider a terrorist to be anyone who commits a violent crime with the goal of instilling terror.

By that definition a person who massacres a school and then commits suicide out of rage or some twisted sense of justice would not be a terrorist, but a person who intended to cause fear (ie, the TDKR shooter) would be. Weaponry used and affiliations are irrelevant.

The only difference between Hitler and the man next door who comes home and beats his kids every day is circumstance. The intent is the same-- to harm others.

They committed terrorism, they're still a terrorist. There's also something to be said about indiscriminate and impersonal violence such as a bomb in a crowded place, or flying an airplane into a building with random people, whereas a shooter necessarily aims. The whole "white American men can't be terrorists" is stupid. Timothy McVeigh and Bill Ayers are terrorists, and they're both American, white and male.

I have no problem labeling Adam Lanza, James Holmes, or Jared Lee Loughner domestic terrorists, though their motives are irrational and unclear.

Most school massacres come across as indiscriminate and impersonal. Surely, killing/maiming as many people as possible takes on that nature.

We're moving off the issue anyway. I don't see any sense in debating whether he or she should be labelled a terrorist, putting them in the same bracket as every other so-called terrorist that's ever lived (I suppose Guy Fawkes was a failed terrorist, by strict definition). The point is, somebody made a homemade bomb, they wanted to kill or injure as many unarmed American citizens as possible, and we don't really know why.

Now that you say that; bombs do tell a story. Judging by the way the bombs exploded, they are what we call over here "mina quiebrapata" (legbreaking mine), which is basically a mine that once triggered, it explodes almost completely horizontally (doesn't really go over 50 cm), hence the name; also, there are some reports about doctors pulling ball bearings out of the injured legs; It all points out to being this, which can also be triggered remotely.

The breaking news is they're preparing to make an arrest, although reports are conflicting. I know the saying about chickens and eggs, but let's avoid using emotional terminology and stick to objective facts. The bomb was clearly designed to cause terror. Was it part of a wider terrorist conspiracy? We can't possibly know yet.

Bolded for disagreement. The terrorist isn't the bomb planter. The terrorist is the American Media. The bomb is supposed to be a message, a cry for attention. The media is who's blowing it out of proportion and causing a ruckus of actual fear. Watch the videos of the incident. The people didn't respond with fear, they responded with immediate aid and action. It's the media that's perpetuating the fear.

--

To compare Sandy Hook and the Boston bombs seems asinine. The only connection I'd be willing to make is that they were both caused by unknown motives, but both were taken by the media to spread fear and promote national security.

Related note: The train I take to school has recently been fitted with video cameras AND audio recording devices. There's now signs that basically say "we're watching". I'll take a picture of it for you guys tomorrow because it bothers me to the point of wanting to don a Guy Fawkes mask.

While it's true that a lot of people did run to help the injured, a LOT more people also responded with fear as well by running the [bleep] away.

Crimes are becoming too easy to commit though. I'm not a hard criminal by any means, but I'd say I regularly break some minor law or another. No sane person can keep in line every day of their lives. I just really hate being watched. Like a lot. It makes me super paranoid, and encourages me to do "bad" things. If they think I'm doing bad things, I take it as a blank check for mayhem. I could just not give any [bleep]s and go on with my life, but I have no idea where the information they're recording is going, who's viewing it, and how long it's kept on record. I had the same freak out at work when we finally started placing security cameras up after the last mob hit in Philly a few months ago. Now I feel like I'm being watched at work and it bothers the shit outta me.

Oh wait.

It's cute you related that to 1984. We had much more oppressives regimes without cameras.

Understand that they'll only go over footage if something suspicious or something actually happened.

Just like any public official could misuse their power?

Besides, if you're undressing with the blinds open you're asking to be peeped.

Unofficially:

"Her life has almost been ruined, her self-confidence entirely destroyed by the thought that prying male eyes have entered her flat."

It's not the state's fault she had low-self confidence anyway... :-?

If you would call that a victim. If somebody gets so offended by the fact some stranger saw them naked, then that person seriously needs to reevaluate their beliefs since there are a lot worse things to be offended about. It was physically harmless.

Now if you want to relate this to the level of sexual assault, that's your will. I just don't feel this is such a crime she thinks it is, the police thinks it is, nor what Sees All thinks it is.

Oh, I agree, I'm just saying that it's still a crime, and it's still an unnecessary intrusion by the government. The peeping isn't justified because she was naive enough to leave her curtains open.

You keep poking fun at people that stand up against a cradle to grave nanny state government, calling their fears irrational and misplaced. Soft tyranny and oppression are very real, and the only thing that scares me more than big brother are the proles that are either oblivious to it or too apathetic to give a damn.

Give them an inch, they'll take a mile.

I'd say peeping on her was sexual assualt, but only if she felt that way. As the victim, it's up to her to decide how okay the situation was.

Not true. This logic is what leads to people regretting consensual sex and deciding they were raped.

I don't think anybody will argue what the two guys did wasn't wrong, but that was a problem with them, not the cameras. If getting peeped on is the worst that can happen with cameras (which is preventable with blinds or a curtain) then I say put them everywhere.

Wouldn't you have every right to be offended if you're being spied on in such a way? This isn't prudishness, this is a matter of being filmed when you have every reason to expect privacy. Having an open window shouldn't be an invitation for any stranger with a camera.
