Behind the Scenes: May 2013

The Nexus (members only)

There's something big, dark, and slimy emerging from the murky depths of Lumbridge Swamp. The nature of this strange entity is unknown, but what it does mean is an awesomely social Prayer-training method aimed at low-level players!

Ysondria-01135913.png

Members will be able to head over to Lumbridge Swamp and help the druid Ysondria channel elemental forces with the sheer force of faith, stemming the tide of the corruption and earning plenty of Prayer XP in the process. There's also a chance that the horror will show its ugly face, and you'll be able to earn more XP sending it back where it belongs.

There'll be a finite amount of Prayer XP that you can gain from this training method, but it'll be enough to get a new player from 1-40 and over that first levelling hurdle with the minimum of chicken bone burial. For everyone else, it'll be a fun way to pick up a nice chunk of Prayer XP in a really cool-looking area while chatting with your friends.

God Emissaries (free players and members)

We've also got a fantastic update for lore fiends among you this month, where you'll learn more about your favourite RuneScape gods and earn some awesome rewards for pledging your allegiance.

God_Emissaries-01135947.png

Following the events of The World Wakes, the RuneScape gods are coming back with a vengeance. Eight new NPCs known as theGod Emissaries will be making their voices heard, and they'll be looking for you to join their cause. Each emissary will be speaking in favour of a god, and will give you a full account what their god represents, what the god in question has been up to since the establishment of the edicts, and what you can do to show your support.

You'll be able to join any of the eight factions they represent: if you favour serenity, freedom and a strong, noble outlook, perhaps you'll pick Armadyl. Do you thrive in chaos, continually reforging yourself in the fires of calamity, each time stronger than before? Zamorak's your guy. If you think Guthix was right, and that the gods should mind their own business, then the new Godless faction might be for you!

Whether you're a free player or a RuneScape member, you can align yourself with the faction of their choice, earning a title and a wieldable standard to display your choice. Members can also complete combat, skilling and exploration objectives for their chosen emissary, earning XP, improvements to the battle standard such as combat and skilling buffs, and a new helmet with level 60 hybrid combat stats.

Farmed and Dangerous (members only)

High-level farmers among you will get your green fingers on 10 new plants this month. Their level requirements will range from level 76 to 96, and they'll make use of less-used plots like hops, flowers and allotments, so they'll be a great help on the way to 99.

They come with a bunch of other great benefits to boot, including opportunities to get XP in other skills once they're grown. Steal the fruit from the jaws of a Venus fly trap, for example, and you'll be able to eat it for a chunk of Thieving XP (just mind your hands!) or pull up sunchoke tubers for some outdoor Strength training. You'll also be able to use your Construction skill to build grape vines, and then grow grapes and make god-themed wines, which can be used to enhance god brew potions.

With all this - and more - coming to the Farming skill, it's going to be a blooming good spring! Farmed_and_Dangerous-01135841.png

Bonus XP Tidy Up (free players and members)

As an extra on one of the above update weeks, we'll be performing some maintenance on the Bonus XP system. There are loads of different items in RuneScape that can boost your XP gain from skilling or combat training, and it's high time we brought them all together under the same roof.

From this update, the bonus XP you're entitled to will be given under the same system as the Recruit a Friend scheme. Most of the changes here are going on under the hood, and are meant to help us in future development, but one big thing you'll notice is that many of these items will no longer need to be worn to access the bonus XP linked to them - so you'll be able to wear an amulet that gives you a combat bonus rather than your usual XP amulet, for example.

Solomon's Store/Squeal of Fortune (free players and members)

We've got some cool stuff coming to Solomon's Store and on the Squeal of Fortune, with dragon keepsake keys for weapons and a bunch of amazing new PvP death animations coming up, as well as the superbly spicy Fiesta de Guerreros. For those of you looking to treat yourself to some new cosmetics, the future's bright and sunny.

RuneScape Beta Programme

The RuneScape Beta Programme got off to a grand start last month, with loads of you logging in to try the HTML5 client beta and the alpha version of the New Interface System, and sending us tonnes of amazing feedback. We're working hard on fixing the first round of bugs and performance issues, but we'll be shifting the programme up a gear later this month, expanding our group of selected testers and - after that - open up both the HTML5 client and NIS to all RuneScape members for testing.

Keep the feedback coming - it's your thoughts, requests and observations which will make RuneScape 3 the game you want it to be. If you haven't been able to try the new features yet, don't worry. You'll get your chance soon, so keep your eyes on the news!

That's it for May. Enjoy the springtime sun, let us know what you think about the above and - most importantly - have fun!

Seems like a pretty inoffensive month only the farming update strikes me as something that could be at all useful.

RANGED SLAYER DUNGEON EARLY 2013

ONE NEW SKILL EARLY 2013, ONE NEW SKILL LATE 2013

2013 IS THE YEAR OF THE PLAYERS WITH FEWER RWT UPDATES

Hahaha, that crossed my mind briefly :P

Most interesting thing is probably the farming update, would definitely like to see where they take Sara/Zammy brews with this. Looks like an interesting reward update as opposed to an XP update.

But really, ranged slayer dungeon ... :c

Meh, should be fun. Pretty sad Warbands will always be the best farming rates from now on though, kinda nulls any farm updates

No love for the faction update?

Now that you mention it, it'd be something to look forward to if the objectives are quite varied and contribute to something besides merely earning a t60 helm. A measure of how devoted you are to a faction through a point and ranking system would make it quite interesting and something to push yourself through, with of course harder objectives pushing you faster through the ranks (e.g. Initiate of Zaros, Knight of Zaros, Archon of Zaros etc.).

FGU is speculating that the God Factions update will actually be the new skill.

Not entirely sure about this as the first skill is expected to be a resource skill, but then again resource collection could be a rather vague term. Not holding my breath on this. If it does turn out to be the new skill, it will be purely P2P.

Quote from Mod Osborne's RuneRadio interview (transcribed text at [qfc]16-17-429-64944778[/qfc])

- if new skills have lore to them in similar way to Dungeoneering?: yes and no: it will have lore tied into the thing of the Sixth Age, in the same way as dungeoneering,

- the first skill is almost flaming/following on from TWW quest. The events of it will lead of kind of a theme and what you are doing on the skill. It follows directly from the lore.

- and the second skill is going to be taking the first skill’s theme even further, on the sense that ‘as I am progressing in the skill, I am also progressing in a story, and there are some connection, maybe milestones in that skill that unlock some more story’ (but that might change in the future);[don’t understand the last part, but think he means that quests might take it further]

- these new skills put less difference on the skilling and story ‘modes’ players like to play on

RANGED SLAYER DUNGEON EARLY 2013

ONE NEW SKILL EARLY 2013, ONE NEW SKILL LATE 2013

2013 IS THE YEAR OF THE PLAYERS WITH FEWER RWT UPDATES

The new skills have been Early Summer and Late 2013 since at least January--no way it was going to be out for May.

The slayer dungeon is another thing, considering we haven't heard about it for ages. It's likely been delayed for one reason or another--which is fine considering that we just got a new Slayer dungeon in February. Slayer gets more updates than most skills, it's fine to have some time off to add more content to those that currently lack a good amount of 70+ content, like Farming.

I was trying to figure what the 8 factions would be.

  1. Godless - BTS

  2. Zamorak - BTS

  3. Armadyl - BTS

  4. Saradomin - Obvious

  5. Bandos - Obvious

  6. Zaros - Obvious

7 & 8 are a little less easy to place though.

Firstly will Guthix basically be the 'godless' faction? Or will he garner a separate slot?

Then we have a few other candidates for the remainin slots: Seren, Tumeken/Desert, Marimbo, Fremminik God, Karamjan God

Personally I'd lean towards 7 & 8 being Seren and Tumeken/Desert since MArimbo etc. are quite minor and it'd be odd to mention guthix's teachings in relation to godless and then have a guthix faction as well.

The 'boosts' from the upgrade standards could be good and the under-the-hood bonus xp thing sounds interesting, thought does it not somewhat render the pendants and clothes being pendants and clothes mute if you only need own them? Also how will the time-limited boon from the sof clothes work with this, does this mean as soon as you get the item you have limited time use?

Prayer thing sounds kinda cool, but useless to me. Farming could have potential - part of my wonders with the point they made about mentioning 'god brews' and having the 8 god factions now whether it's gonna be a sly slip in of extra brew potions (more than just super/extreme sara/zammy brew). Hopefully they are all useful and not just for the sake of filling things out plants though. (eg if the new hop patch stuff is just more hops its gonna be a waste)

Also on comments about the 'early 2013' stuff, as mentioned by jmods in like jan-ish first skill was being slated for summer so it's a safe bet that he vague terms of "early" and "late" simply refer to roughly jan-june and july-dec. Also the 'less rwt' promise they have kinda kept, what they promised in full was to scale it back so it's less intrusive and ott. I'd say they've done this quite successfully with sof and soloman being reduced to 1 update a week at most, usually at the weekend for sof and strapped to the main update for soloman opposed to the page and a half of sof newsposts we saw last year that knocked game updates off the front page within like hours of the update. Plus they haven't been attacking us with in-game pop ups for them anymore and they did recently make the sof thingy less intrusive if you chose to ignore spins all together.

I like the Nexus update, specially since I read recently a topic where people say that new players are really having a tough time. This should help.

Farming update, I always welcome it, looks very nice, maybe I'll use once again the other plots.

Can't say no to lore, gonna probably join the godless faction :P.

And the bonus xp thing, well it does make things easier, but it's more useful that way

inb4 dead content, create acount in july and find out that you are the only low level player who is using this

Members can also complete combat, skilling and exploration objectives for their chosen emissary, earning XP, improvements to the battle standard such as combat and skilling buffs, and a new helmet with level 60 hybrid combat stats.

Cool but were are t90 magic and ranged weapons?

I doubt that new brews will be better than overolad/extremes/soup

Looks solid to me. I like that free players will get a cheap way of getting those first pray lvls. Farming update sounds pretty cool, new lore will be interesting, and cleaning up the way bonus exp works...well it will help them I assume. Nothing game changing but not every month has to be, just wish there was a quest.

Quest shortage makes me a bit sad too. I'm glad they are devoting bigger budgets to make quests better, but it does kinda suck when it means we go for months without quest releases so that they can work on beta stuff and it feels all the more prominent by the relatively short turn around of big updates (eoc + html5 + new skills) eatting up dev time.

I vote for Brassica Prime!!!!

Gimme a One!

Gimme a Two!

Gimme a One Two Three!

Brassica Prime is the god for me!

On a serious note - who are the gods for the Dwarves and Elves, again? Might those be indicators for 7 and 8 respectively?

Elves are Seren.

Dwarves we haven't really been given much in the way of God info, one would assume Guthix seeing as he brought them in originally or Saradomin seeing as most everyone swapped to him. Only other possible choice in my eyes would be perhaps the Fremenik God based on the location of Kelda + their distaste for magic.

Seren sounds very probable. I personally think they'll take some desert god(s) for number 8.
