am i the only one on tip.it that has stopped caring about punctuation and grammar?

like yah spelling is pretty impotent (how punny) lest u become understood but through the years ive given up on capitalizing first words in sentences for example.

also your and you're has become "ur" etc etc

for me, punctuation and grammar has become obsolete. unless im chatting up a hot girl.

Hot girls love punctuation

It depends, sometimes I make an effort, sometimes I don't. depends on the context

true true.

everybody knows that the first way to lose an arguement on the internet is by lack of grammar and punctuation lolz

I usually always try to use decent grammar and punctuation. It just feels wrong not to. Also, you look less intelligent to some people if you don't use proper grammar/punctuation. I don't ever say "your point is invalid because you can't capitalize words," but I think like that all the time. There is no reason why you shouldn't do it.

Sort of goes back to context. Are you trying to make a serious point about serious things? Make that shit classy. If not, doesn't really matter.

As long as you remember that content is the important part, that is. Doesn't matter how formal you are if you're using it to cover the fact that you don't actually know anything.

Spelling properly, just like dressing properly, has a signification. It means you're willing to put in effort. If you're not, then why should I be?

I care about grammar, punctuation and the like, but spelling kind of slips in between typos. I miss a cap'd letter here and there, and i have my own short hand from time to time (lots of parentheses and " 'd " 's). Generally I find it hard to decipher context when grammar is clearly not made a priority by the poster though. If I see a lot of lower "i" 's and "urs" 's that's okay - I still kinda get what you're saying. But;

if ur typin lyk ths nd u thnk im gunna try 2 figur out wat ur sayin

my brain kind of hurts and ignores it.

When I text, I tend to omit apostrophes just because they're annoying to put in on my phone. So, you're just turns into youre. But that's texting.

I don't really type anywhere else outside of academics. And in academics, it's stupid not to punctuate and use proper grammar.

You have no idea how bad it looks on you when you purport to have a degree in English/Writing but still use should of.

You should say "should've", right?

OT: If I don't have any time limit for typing something (aka a forum or a chat) I try to use my best grammar and spelling. Now, if it's a FPS or something I'm going to want to tell you that a man is about to knife you to death a quickly as possible and thus grammar, capitalization, and accurate keystrokes go out the window.

The only difference between Hitler and the man next door who comes home and beats his kids every day is circumstance. The intent is the same-- to harm others.

I told her there was a secret method to doing it - and there is - but my once nimble and agile fingers were unable to perform because I was under the influence.

valid points from every1

one of the reasons why i might have diverted from proper grammar and punctuation on tip.it may be the fact, that over the past many years I have gradually abstained from participating in serious debates, runescape related. (have not been game active in 5-6 years)

so when i post, it is random utterings of nonsense :P

i'd like to add though, that one who dresses "smart" can still be a total illiterate fool and/or socially stunted in all aspects :)

which concludes, that proper spelling and/or punctuation and dressing have only one thing in common. they can both be used to camouflage ignorance. (knowing how to spell does not reflect ones intelligence)

^However a smart dressing person does far better in first impressions than a sloppily dressed one, and if you do poorly in the first impression people often won't bother to hand around for a second.

In the same way, making sure your posts are easy to read is a way of maximizing the chances that people will actually read them.

Well, the trick to that is to try not to have terrible points. Why would you want people to listen to you if you had nothing to say?

As for the OP, correct grammar makes sentences readable at a consistent pace. I hate reading discussions at a normal-slow-normal-slow pace because one of the posters isn't writing out words or makes fragment/run-off sentences.

If I make my writing more difficult to read just so I can type slightly faster, I'm passing on the burden to my readers and I'd feel selfish. If we consider that many people read one post, it's much more efficient for everybody to use correct grammar, punctuation and spelling. It does depend on the format I'm typing in though, if it's instant messaging I'll usually take more liberties like ignoring full stops or first-letter capitalisation, since I'm being far less serious and I'm talking to a much smaller pool of people.
