7-Sep-2013 - Forum Downtime

Recommended Posts

At some point during UTC day hours (probably before midday UTC) on Saturday 7th September, the forum will be offline for software updates. These updates are likely to take quite some time as we will be performing a large amount of file system restructuring, and so the forum may be offline for up to 6 hours while we do this, although hopefully it will not take that long.

We apologise for the inconvenience and will keep you updated if anything changes.

Thanks for the heads up. I guess I'll have to find some other way to occupy myself on Saturday morning.

Already fixed :P

Couldn't help but LOL when I saw this... Were we stuck on "7th August"?

I joke, but maybe you should come play some Forum Games to keep up-to-date? :P

Same here. I'll be missing my favorite Saturday Morning Forum Games, but I'll be looking forward to forum improvements. :shades:

Thanks for the heads up! Will we likely notice anything different when we're back? Faster loading speeds etc.?

This is something I would like to know as well. Maybe @MageUK will have answers? :geek:

Going Gandhi on the forum I see.

I don't get this... Elaborate, please?

Not sure about the browsers (not home atm) but the mobile version seems to running a lot smoother than it did before.

Oooo...and there's mod tools in mobile now. Nice!

Edit: some of the emoticons don't seem to work on mobile though.

Old 'likes' are gone from posts. Nobody likes me :(

Hmm that shouldn't have happened, I'll see if I can recover them from the old data tomorrow.

This maintenance is now complete. :) Please report any issues you see here in this topic or to an admin directly.

Argh! New Problem! Direct login at  https://forum.tip.it/index.php?app=core&module=global&section=login won't stay fully secure now! Please force any off-site requests to use HTTPS, especially on that page! This is making my FireFox Browser's mixed content warning go off with an alert every time, and I've had to tell NoScript to temporarily force HTTPS for two of google's domain areas until you can fix it, just to get the data without having it go non-full-secure! This can't be overlooked, especially for privacy-conscious/security-conscious users, as the newest FireFox Browsers will likely simply cut those requests off and damage the page! :wall:

Also, why are links going purple in the editor, instead of white/gray?!?!? It makes them evilly hard to see on the Tip.It Theme! Please fix this too!!! :uhh:

UPDATE #1:

Just discovered I can't check on Likes that I've given to others. Please restore the feature when you can... I miss it!

The login is still fully secure, we just need to look at how we're handling our adverts on that page. Adverts should be disabled on the login pages now.

The links being purple means you've visited them, this does need tweaking on the Tip.It Theme to make them more readable. Link colours should be fixed in the editor now.

The likes issue has already been mentioned above, it's not that you can't check on posts you've liked, we just lost the given likes in the update, which wasn't supposed to happen. Perhaps this wasn't what you were talking about, but I've restored the ability to see who has liked your posts. You seem to be saying there was a search which showed you posts you have liked? I didn't know this existed in 3.3 and if it's missing in 3.4 I won't be coding something up to replace it...

The  (http://forum.tip.it/public/style_emoticons/dark_skin/icon_e_biggrin.gif) and :P (http://forum.tip.it/public/style_emoticons/dark_skin/tongue.gif) are the only ones I've noticed so far. The first just shows as an empty box and the second as a colon-capital p inside a box.

Again, this is just on the mobile version. In Firefox they display properly.

Disabled my temporary custom NoScript settings and confirmed the fix on the login pages. However, I still wish I knew why adverts could affect *.googleapis.com and *.googleusercontent.com requests... May we have some insight on that, please? :-k

As for links... http://forum.tip.it/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=user_activity&mid=103724 ... Yup, confirmed here as well in the editor area. |^_^|

As for the "Given Likes", the search exists on a person's profile page, under "Likes > Forums > Given", showing all of a user's likes that they gave to others. I'm not 100% sure what you did or what little switch got hit, but the problem appears to be fixed already, and I hope it never comes back to haunt us. :D

Long and short of it, nicely done repairing all that so absolutely swiftly, and thank you!

Uhm... One other thing just hit me... Why have the quotes been changed from tags to blocks during replies and editing, such that we can't easily split them for quick and properly divided replies? It sure makes a headache on discussions such as these where we bring up multiple issues at one burst, then need to break them down into separate bits, and even find ourselves discarding bits as parts of the discussions finish up. Heck, I'm gonna have a hard time snipping a quote to keep it manageable as well. :wall:

It's been a few days, so I figured this should be a separate post... :-k

Anyway, I've just noticed a major forum-wide character set issue. If you view  http://forum.tip.it/topic/321285-alan%E2%80%99s-challenge-2/ with no character encoding settings changed and the Tip.It Theme, it uses ISO-8859-1 instead of UTF-8, resulting in a mess in the phrase "Alan's Challenge" where a single quote or apostrophe should be. I'm not sure if this is really an issue with the NewsBot and its' scraping system, or if there's a deeper issue with the forums, but I figured this should be brought up as quickly as possible. :(

[EDIT:] I just discovered this is affecting all the themes, and I was even forced to rewrite the URL due to how the forum was messing up while going into Editing Mode after I tried to post in UTF-8... :wall:

  • 2 weeks later...

I just noticed this today, but the "Account Problem" tab at the top of the page is missing from both the Deflection and Tip.It themes. It still appears properly in the IP.Board theme.

I just discovered the RuneScape News sub-board (http://forum.tip.it/forum/27-runescape-news/) has gone totally haywire with multiple post entries. I don't know what happened, but I hope it eventually gets fixed. :(

This has been like that ever since we migrated to 3.3 (probably 2 years ago now) and it's not going to go away until we do a full UTF-8 migration, aka back migrating all posts in a similar kind of way to when we first imported from phpBB, every post would need to be converted, I do want to do this at some point though.

Not sure what's going on here, it may be trying to de-duplicate the entries based on the name which of course is a bit messed up because of the character set.

One more bug I just hit upon. I'm finding myself unable to completely sign out, and some old cookies I have seem to be logging me right back in, when they should have already had rewrites sent from the server to cancel them out. Can you bounce any active sessions I may still have with the server and tell it that it needs to flush my cookies? I don't want to leave any open backdoors for others to mess with my account here. :ohnoes:

[EDIT:] Visiting the "Account Problem" page while signed out has also resulted in auto-signing me back in. I figured this info might be useful in handling the problem. :?

[EDIT #2:] I might as well note that I've tried shutting the browser down completely too. No effect, unfortunately, as I find myself signed back in on visit to the forums anyway. I might as well note that I don't have the browser set to auto-save sessions.

(p.s.: Any answer regarding my query about quote boxes on the previous page?)
