Why is 2006 seen by many to be the best year for RS?

I'm a bit confused. 2006 was the start of Jagex catering to newer players. Lumbridge Tutors and Home Teleport were introduced, which people felt made the game too easy. I can understand early 2006, but not mid-late 2006. I prefer 2005 myself.

I think the bit slightly AFTER the grand exchange came out would have been the best time, content wise. Obviously, without the GE mind you.

People, nothing else.

As I have a saying, I'd do anything to go back to RS in 2007, but I will not play 07 RS.

I miss the people I know. I do not miss the actual game itself one single bit.

If they came back to 07RS and played on that, I would have played 07 RS, but they didn't, ergo there is no reason for me to go back there at all whatsoever.

I remember that being a much bigger problem in F2P (F2P community is much more vicious, I'll admit) than P2P back then though. I do remember there has been complaints against 'PC products' back in ~2005.

Unpopular opinion inbound.

From when they removed free trade to when they brought it back was my favorite time of the game. Moreso from 2008-2010.

Why that is.

Bots weren't as rampant as they were pre-removal and post-return.

People made their money through PvM, Skilling, and Merching, and didn't ruin the game for some people like dicing/staking did.

Friends and the community I was in at the time was great, it kept me playing and kept me wanting to play.

As somone who has been playing RS since 2002, I say that in terms of gameplay, RS is at its best right now. Sure there are things that the players don't like in terms of money making goals by Jagex, but I love the development of RS over the years. I don't miss a tiny screen with limited ability to get things done. I am working towards 95 prayer at the moment and I could not imagine burying the amount of bones it would require. Thank you RS for developing and evolving.

The year I started playing - best years of rs.

Current year - worst year ever, rs dying, falling userbase, ruinedscape.

Apply this formula to majority of rs players and you have your answer.

It was the best because PvP was the endgame content and skillcapes weren't released yet.

People underestimate the importance of pvp endgame. With pvm endgame, there's two options:

1. Bosses are farmable and people will complain about lack of challenge

2. Bosses are challenging and people will complain that they aren't farmable

Pvm has been dominant for six years now and people still dont realize that "challenging" and "consistently profitable" are mutually exclusive boss qualities.

With pvp, the more skilled you are, the more money you make. If you suck at pking and/or are too afraid to take risks, then you can go farm bosses or skill for less money per hour where there's less risk involved.

There's also the fact that bosses are completely predictable and static, whereas other players are always using different equipment, combat styles, and tactics. When you're fighting the exact same opponent using the exact same strategy for hours on end, it gets pretty boring after a while.

Rushing and pjing also hadn't grown out of control yet in 2006.

Finally even if you were too afraid to risk your stuff, Castle Wars and Fight Pits were still a lot of fun even though they were just a big money sink.

To be honest i didn't want to vote for Runescape, 'cus i don't find it fun like before anymore, but my loyalty to this game (since 2001), i voted for it.

still, RS won't win the title among other games.

OFF TOPIC: DON'T FORGET TO VOTE FOR THE GAME OF THE YEAR -> GTA V 8-)
winning for sure

People always have a "honeymoon period" whenever they find something new. It lasts for a good few months until reality hits and they realise it's not all that great. This concept applies to lots of things really; new video games, new relationships, new clothes, new job... Quite a lot of people joined the game in '06, so therefore there's so many people who see that period as a Golden Age, because at the time they couldn't see any of the flaws.

Objectively speaking, though, skillcapes were the biggest change around that time. In just one update, the entire culture of playing RuneScape was transformed from "go as far as you really want to" to "nothing less than 99 will cut it".

People prefer 2006 because most of them were younger and maybe only just started and had no knowledge of the game. After years of playing they now have knowledge of the game so its not the same. Any game you play for the first time/weeks you get interested to find out more ect

People were like this when 2007 got released as well then they stopped playing that when they realized it wouldn't be the same, its not the graphics or the slow exp they wanted back its the fun times of being a noob and not knowing what to do.

The game was on the rise.

Alot of storylines were unfolding.

The horizon looked bright.

Little did we know how badly Jagex would drag ass and such a sea of crappy, forgettable updates since then.

It's pure nostalgia for most, as proven to a great extent by OSRS. People wanted it back so badly because it was soo much better apparently, yet when they got it back they found it boring and quickly quit. Nostalgia of what we had when we were younger and what used to be always makes things seem so amazing and blots out the negatives, but unfortunately we can never recapture that. Even with a time machine to literally step back to that time you'd find yourself disillusioned by the rough edges your memory had smooth off and by being older and having a different outlook.

Of course some genuinely consider it a peak and dislike what has happened since, but for most it's nostalgia fuelled in my opinion that or a slight bitterness at their achievements being devalued by later updates, but that is the nature of an mmo - things get easier in time.

I started around late 05-2006..

For me it was because RS was the talk of the town at the time, everyone in school & in my neighbourhood were talking about it, I remember the local internet cafe was packed after school time with people playing this game... I'm sure this was the case in many other areas too.

There was huge publicity at the time on Miniclip and other big sites too, it was pretty hard to miss all them runescape ads lol.

Lastly gameplay at the time was soo much different compared to what it is today there was no such thing as 'xp waste'.. The majority just made pures & went pking with friends... everyone seemed to love that, a huge amount of people anyway, wasn't really what I was into though.

Overall I think 2006 is regarded as the best times not because of game content but because of the people, everyone did what they thought was fun with no cares, whether it be pking, standing in/ around Falador park merching or skilling, we did it cause it was fun not because its a goal we had set ourselves to achieve like now.

People always remember times past as good or bad, despite the fact that they never are... Time just is, it is only we who attribute divine properties(such as enjoyment) to it.

I suspect why most people "miss" 2006 is because it was when they found the game challenging, still a new world, with places to be explored; when they hadn't mastered the game, but still struggled with it.

We miss the sense of accomplishment which came from such times.
