Coinshare, World Map and Tutorial

Today's triple-header of updates includes something for everyone. First up, there's the Coinshare update, allowing high-level boss-fighting groups to enjoy the fairness and convenience that Coinshare brings without negatively impacting the economy. Next up, our first batch of upgrades to the World Map have made this vital interface nigh-instantaneous to load and slick to use. Finally, our new tutorial gives new players a whistle-stop tour of RuneScape gameplay, before the Path System leads them to the very best novice content the game has to offer.

Coinshare

Coinshare's a cracking way for everyone to get quick, fair returns when fighting in a group of friends. Until now, though, it's caused some issues for the RuneScape economy, as it meant that particularly valuable items were being sold at set prices more often than they would otherwise. Today's changes remedy this problem, without sacrificing the convenience and fairness that makes the system great.

Under the new system, certain valuable drops are converted to shards instead of coins. Each item is broken down into 120 of these, and split evenly across all eligible players. These will be sent straight to the players' banks, and can then be sold on the Grand Exchange at a price of each player's choosing. Those in the market to buy one of these valuable items can then choose between buying the whole item, or buying 120 shards and combining them.

This way, everyone using Coinshare gets their cut of valuable drops, while allowing those drops to work naturally within the RuneScape economy.

World Map

Today sees a range of technical and utility improvements to the World Map, making it the indispensible adventuring tool it should be. It looks great, too!

As you can see, we've brought the visual style bang up to date, and smoothed the fonts so they're easier to read. The biggest changes come under the hood, though. Where the map could previously take as long as 10 seconds to load, our clever background streaming technology means it now appears almost instantly. It won't slow down your machine, either, running at a solid 50 frames per second on most hardware.

This is just the beginning, and there are further improvements to the world map coming soon. Keep an eye out for an upcoming dev blog from Mod Colin!

New Tutorial

At one time or another, we've all been new players, and that means a tutorial: suiting up to tackle Tutorial Island, defeating the dragon during Unstable Foundations, or turning back the Troll Invasion. As part of our commitment to bring new adventurers to Gielinor, we've pooled everything we've learned and created Ashdale: our new opening game experience.

Ashdale goes back to RuneScape's roots: it's a brand-new tutorial island, where every new player will start their RuneScape adventures. Custom-built to showcase the many facets of RuneScape gameplay, a run through Ashdale will introduce fledgling adventurers to combat, skill training and boss battles in a simple and intuitive way, guided by the veteran adventurer Gudrik.

We want new players in the thick of the action as soon as possible, so Ashdale's our quickest tutorial yet. When it's done, though, the Path System takes over. Accessed through the Adventures interface, the Path System points new players to the best early content and essential novice quests.

If you're not a new player but want to experience Ashdale yourself, head over to Taverley and visit Gudrik in his house in the south of the town.

Enjoy!

There's something here to make everyone's RuneScape experience easier and more fun. As always, give us your feedback over on the forums, and look out for Mod Mark's monthly Behind the Scenes article later this week!

How to Start

To activate Coinshare, first invite your group to your Friends Chat channel. Then, open the Friends Chat setup interface and click on the Coinshare icon.

To access the World Map, press the M key, or click the icon at the lower right corner of the mini-map.

If you want to take a look around Ashdale and try out the new tutorial, speak to Gudrick in his house at the south end of Taverley.

Please note: You won't be able to leave Ashdale until you've completed the tutorial.

In Other News

Two unicorn foal companion pets - one innocent, one mischievous - are waiting for you to pick them up at Solomon's General Store.

You'll notice helpful snow imps - along with the odd bit of festive finery - popping up around Gielinor. These guys will be handing out the Festive Aura from the 1st of December onwards, but they'll stay tight-lipped on the topic until then.

I wonder if they thought about people with full banks. Would be quite sad if someone got a drop, and it disappears from existence. I also wonder what drops are "sharded"? guess a quick search on G.E should show this?

Oh and a new loading screen! Quite lovely too ^^

A quick look on GE - some starting price of (120) shards are quite low compare to real price - shards include dks ring, d axe, nex (armour, z/w/b), gwd (armour, hilt, amulet, ss, zs), automaton gloves, tds (limbs, dplate shards), seismic and drygores

Guess incentive to cs is still circumstantial.

Map does load pretty quick and pretty neat...guess that's good news for new players.

Might try the new tutorial in the morning.

Ashdale sounds intriguing..must go try at some point and a faster smoother world map is long, long over due...

Not really into bossing but wonder how well the Coinshare system will pan out

I have a feeling that the surge nerf in Rot6 is going to cause some grief among high level pvmers.

Map is long overdue. I miss the days when it was a pop out map that i could minimize and keep playing.

Coinshare sounds like a way to fix things, probably not the best way though. I do like the idea of being able to buy shards as finances come  along to work towards 120 and then combine them at the end, rather than buying an item in one huge purchase.

New tutorial will not be something I check out unless they offer me some kind of cash/exp reward that makes it worth leaving what I'm currently working on.

Better off under priced then over priced. That way the prices can rise to what market actually is.

The non laggy insta open map has to be one of the most long overdue updates ever. The amount of hours over the years I must have spent waiting for that damn thing to open/ missclicking it and waiting for it to open/close.

I'm looking forward to trying out the new tutorial, as sure, its yet another tutorial, but the other one clearly wasn't working so if its better at bringing in new players that can only be a good thing.

Haven't made it to the computer yet, but anyone see a mod post yet about if they did what they said they'd try? Such as removing all the troll splits and adding the untradeable stuff like effigies/clues/etc?

Troll splits like Dragon Dagger,  GS shards are not made into shards. Not sure about the untradeables

Boots and gloves for Bandos/Arma/Sub aren't listed? O_o

Vwand shard is less than V robe top shard....yeah, they really could have put a pinch of effort into the starting ge prices. I know their value is going to be 1/120 regardless, but seriously, wtf.

Looks like GWD boots/gloves aren't turned to shards under the new system.

Also wondering why they didn't set the starting shard prices based off the current GE prices for the items. Divine sigil shards for 6250gp each, okay.

In real life MMO you don't get 99 smithing by making endless bronze daggers.

Oh right yeah the GE pricing is such a huge deal [/sarcasm]. The player base will eventually fix that through buying/selling. Give them a break. Virtus wand is sooo overpriced anyways.

When they never set a proper pricing (especially if something is based off of existing things or idiotic like offhand ascension...) and takes months to catch up (or simply never does), then it IS a huge deal.

And if you're going to mention overpriced, wand is still cheaper than the 120m+ virtus robe top/bottom, according to Jagex.

504m drygores....are we back on release day?

Sara hilt shard is 4,166...which is ~500k. Saradomin sword is ~191k/shard (23m). When there's such stupidity as this, I think we're allowed to make a big deal about it. If guide prices are SO far off, it's going to be ages before they're ever remotely close to matching prices.

Just did the tutorial and I agree it is really good, nice simple and quick, and shows you the basics, though I dont get how they chose only a few skills to introduce and ignored others.

The thing thats really confused me is the graphics of Ashdale for a number of reasons. Firstly the graphics and building style seemed completely unlike anything in Runescape, they seemed quite modern as opposed to medievil.

Secondly, the layout and size of the town was very unlike anything in Runescape: everything was so spread out with massive buildings, which is completely different to Gilienor where every city is so cramped up with small buildings that are very close together.

Thirdly, it's such a massive area, the time to develop all the new graphics for it must have taken months, it seems such a waste to put all that effort on a place we'll never see again, it would have been great it it had been integrated into the game properly. I know putting time into something that will draw in new players is vital. But the effort that must have gone in the area I wish could be put into redeveloping our current cities like Falador and Varrock that look attrocious in comparison to Ashdales graphics.

Ok so it might not be completely accurate, but its not broken or made horribly ujderpriced. Besides the wand was overpriced before this. I wouldn't mind looking at this as an oportunity for players to get a somewhat fair grab at saving themselves money. Hell jagex probably priced shards that way in anticipation that they new system would lower prices a bit because people would be buying shards and not a complete item. Basically players wouldn't be saving money for a lump sum to buy the item. They would save to buy fractional pieces of the item.

They should put the price of all starting items at 1 gp and then readjust the list price after a 2 week GE sales median value and then let it roll like normal.

The bickering over the starting list price is ridiculous.

I'm sure our kings of mercantilism can handle that.

Now you're just mulishly refusing to cede the point... there is no way you're 'anticipating' lower prices if you value SGS at 500k when SS is 23m, because SGS is universally a better weapon. If Jagex wasn't lazy, they would realize that it looks extremely weird, and they would have said something about it.

Anyway, excited for the new tutorial, with Burthorpe being such a horrible place.

Edit: the new tutorial doesn't impress me, there is zero exploration going on, the graphics aren't particularly interesting, the contents are not useful to playing RS.
