New systems watch you play. Hear you play. And now it may effect your game. How long before games start to feel too real?

As much as I hate the idea of a console that listens to everything you say, that is quite honestly the best use of that technology that I've ever heard of.

They could actually do some interesting things with that. I remember reading a (joke) idea for a horror game that picks up on whatever sound you make; say, screaming draws the monsters toward you...

They could use it for interesting things that would add tremendously to the gaming experience. Or they could use it to spy on you and serve ads based on your mood/interests. Guess which option makes more money. Still, it's nice to see that they might use it for more than just advertising, even if it looks like so far they are only expanding into other uses aimed solely at annoying the user (or creeping them out, when you start getting commercials for stuff you are actively talking about all the time).

As long as they keep the swear detection out of Mario Kart and Arma  |^_^|

Interestingly serving ads based on such visual data is proving a bit of a legal minefield in some places so may not come to pass.

Tesco supermarkets here in the UK wanted to use such targetted ad boards starting in their petrol stations and stuff but the scheme is getting held up due to concerns over the software making the judgement and issues it could raise - eg assuming someone is gay based on visual data and putting ads up that make them unsafe if others spot it, or issues of gender identity for both trans people/crossdressers and for normal people who are a bit masc/fem looking for the gender etc.

Of course it depends on the extent of what they want to judge on and the perceived dangers of doing so in a private setting vs a public one.

I am glad that at least some politicians have managed to spot that issue before it actually becomes one. I'd also just as soon not have a TV that parrots recent events via commercial selection, though the idea of being able to say 'I really wish I know about ____' and then getting a bunch of answers at the next commercial break has a certain appeal, even if that's extremely creepy (nothing like active confirmation that your electronics are spying on you to increase your sense of privacy).

Quite honestly, if stores started having personalized advertising, I'd probably just stop going places (especially if they ever decide to do something like using your phones to track your identity so they can turn the world into the marketing utopia shown in Minority Report).

I only think personalised targetted advertising is ok when you opt in to it and even then I'd rather it be more passive forms (eg when going to a stores website your purchases from loyalty card are used to suggest offers etc.); any more intrusive I just find annoying especially as their 'clever algorithms' clearly suck SO BAD.

For example on facebook a lot of the ads and such it targets at me are to do with sports, expensive holidays and finding the right woman for you. This for an unemployed, gay, sports disliking person. I mean I don't even talk about sports and holidays in statuses or anything and have no likes, groups or pages that indicate an interest. But apparently all the liking of anime, gaming and books equates to sports and holidays in their smart algorithms.

It'd be nice if they implemented this for online games' chat. If it caught you using nasty language (e.g. "Cod kids yelling racial slurs" etc.), it would mute you for x minutes/invert your controls/some form of punishment after a certain amount of warnings. But using it this way is just a waste.

Maybe in public, if I'm in party chat I should be able to use any language I want.
