Holy Moley - Giant Mole Update

Members only

The Giant Mole's been besieging begonias since 2006, and it's high time she got an overhaul!

We've applied the full power of Malignius Mortifer's magic to bring her up to date with modern boss mechanics, two difficulty modes and a more accessible, instanced lair for solo or group runs.

Her drops include some grand new rewards: a clingy mole who can improve your anti-dragon shield, potions that'll speed up growth in your tree patches, and more.

There's no better or more rewarding way for mid-level combat fans to get into boss fighting. Read on for further details, or play now!

Meet the Mole

The Giant Mole's one of RuneScape's most venerable boss monsters. The result of an accident featuring a slightly suspicious plant-growth potion, the mole lives under Falador Park, terrorising gardener Wyson.

The first change you'll notice is an altogether more obvious entrance to the mole's lair. There's no longer any need to dig through molehills to enter, or to bring a light source - the mole's old light-extinguishing mechanics are gone.

Entrance to the Mole's Lair

The lair is now instanced, so when you click on the entrance you'll be prompted to choose how to do so:

  • Start a new session: This allows you to create a new instance in which to fight the Giant Mole at normal difficulty. You can set the maximum number of people allowed, a minimum combat level allowed, and a numeric entry key to ensure privacy for you and your friends.
  • Start a new session (hard mode): This creates a new instance where you can fight a more difficult version of the Giant Mole. You can also adjust the instance's entry settings, as described above.
  • Join an existing fight: This allows you to join an existing instance in progress on your world. Simply enter the name of the player who created the instance, and - if necessary - the entry key.
  • Rejoin my previous battle: This allows you to rejoin an ongoing instance which you left, be it voluntarily, through logging out or through dying.
Note that an instance will collapse when the last player remaining in it leaves.

While there are no entry requirements, the normal mode fight is balanced for a solo player of around combat level 110. Hard mode is aimed at a solo player of combat level 140, or a group of three players at combat level 110.

The mole's been updated to use the sort of attacks you'd see in higher-levelled boss fights. The fight progresses in difficulty over three phases, where she'll drop rocks from the ceiling, summon mole minions to aid her, burrow underground to attack from below, and burst into a damage-boosting rage. You'll need to be on your toes to prevail, ready to react to whatever the mole throws your way.

The fight's a fantastic way for mid-level players to get a taste of the high-end game. During normal mode, you'll see some handy tips at the top of the screen, which will help you counter the mole's attacks and survive the encounter. Then, once you've mastered the normal fight, gather some friends and tackle hard mode!

Rewards

The Giant Mole's possible drops include a new clingy mole: a cute critter who's oddly attracted to the surface of the anti-dragon shield.

Anti-Dragon Shield with Mole

With 45 Crafting, use him on the shield and he'll grip tightly onto its front, boosting its stats to those of a level 55 hybrid shield. The mole also gives the shield a chance to reduce up to 150 dragonfire or Giant Mole hits by 75%, but to deal that damage gradually as a damage-over-time effect.

After those 150 hits, the mole will drop off and skulk away, and the shield will revert to its original form and stats.

Also new are numbing roots. These handy consumables remove any damage-over-time effects that can be cleared by the Freedom ability - including the DoT from the shield!

Exclusive to hard mode are vials of ultra-growth potion. Yes, Malignius Mortifer's more snappily named prototype is yours to use - each dose will skip a healthy tree farming patch ahead by two stages of growth! Please note that this potion is untradeable.

As before, the mole will always drop mole skin, a mole claw and a mole nose which can be given to Wyson in exchange for valuable bird nests and - with an appropriately upgraded Falador shield - lily seeds. Falador gardeners will now exchange up to 50 lily seeds a day for 100 Farming XP each, if you've completed the Falador Elite Task Set.

We hope you enjoy the updated Giant Mole. As always, discuss this and give your feedback over on the forums!

Mod Deg and the RuneScape Team

How to fight the Giant Mole:

Enter the mole hole in Falador Park. Speak to Wyson if you're looking for advice.

Requirements:

  • You must be a RuneScape member.
  • Combat level 110 is recommended for normal mode.
  • Combat level 140, or a group of three with level 110, is recommended for hard mode.
In Other News

We've made some improvements to the Falador Shield 4:

  • It now has the same damage-reduction ability that the anti-dragon shield (mole) does, with the added advantage that it doesn't degrade.
  • When wielded, the shield gives +5% XP and respect in the Artisans' Workshop.
  • The confirmation message previously displayed when using the shield's prayer restoration ability has been removed.
  • It is no longer possible to use the shield to find the Giant Mole. There are visual cues to replace this function during the fight.
We've added to the auras available on Solomon's Store:
  • Added the Enrichment aura for the Divination skill, which comes in five tiers, giving up to a 15% additional chance to harvest enriched memories.
  • Added tier 5 versions of the Call of the Sea, Lumberjack, Five-Finger Discount, Quarrymaster, Tracker and Greenfingers auras, each giving a 15% boost to their respective skill actions.
  • Added two new tiers for the Jack of Trades aura. Tier 2 requires 15 skills within 3 hours, giving 1.5x the XP that the tier 1 aura does, and tier 3 requires 20 skills for 2x the XP given by tier 1.
  • The Oddball aura has become a toggle, and its graphical effect has been made persistent.
In light of your feedback, we have made some changes to the Recruit a Friend system:
  • The free membership for recruiters has been reduced to 7 days, and the XP bonus for the recruiter has been reduced to 5% of the recruit's XP, or 10% in close proximity.
  • Both recruiter and recruit get an additional +10% XP for 7 days, as per the earlier version of the system.
These changes make the system more immediately useful, but less open to exploitation.

Take a look at the patch notes for other updates released today.

The following fixes and tweaks have now been implemented. If you believe a change has not been documented, either in the patch notes or the news posts for this week’s update, please detail the change so that it may be added.

As always, be sure to submit a bug report should you encounter a gameplay bug or graphical glitch in-game.

Graphical:

  •
  • Players will no longer see four red dots on the minimap outside of the cave used during While Guthix Sleeps.
  • Brutal longswords now sheathe in the correct position.
  • Serpentine rapiers now sheathe in the correct position.
Skills, D&Ds & Minigames:
  •
  • An issue with the cursed magic tree where it was regenerating without its non-cursed counterpart being cut down has been fixed.
  • The World Event token boost for increasing the chance of gaining enriched memories from Divination has been removed.
  • Hotkeys can once again be used in the Divination energy rift interface.
  • Warband supplies will now vanish upon logging in to a free world.
  • Players can no longer hand in the same item 3 times to quickly complete the Seasinger Umi random event in a Player-Owned Port.
  • A voyage for the Trapper and Assassin in the Pincers, which was returning with less than expected rewards, has been updated.
Other:
  •
  • Goutbones now appears on free worlds.
  • Bonus xp is now correctly applied when a player harvests a barberry bush.
  • Players can once again go inside the well in Taverley.
  • Snipe and Snapshot's tooltips have been updated to match the recent rebalance.
  • Players can no longer walk through the cliff face next to the River Elid.
  • A mention of teleporting rules has been added to the Wilderness manual.
  • XP gained over 1 billion will now display on one line in the Hero interface.
  • Players will no longer be told they have a full inventory when crafting ascension bolts with free space.
  • Hiding familiar options now works with pig familiars.
  • Several force walk tiles around the Draynor area have been removed.
  • Warpriest armour will now revert to its level 50 version upon logging into free to play worlds.
  • The minigame HUD for The Bird and the Beast no longer appears in Draynor.
Ninja Fixes:
  •
  • Upgraded slayer helmets are now using combat scrolls as they should.
  • Dragon limbs have been added to the drops broadcasted message system.
  • The NPCs in Miscellania now have a handy right-click "Get approval" option.
  • Attempting to assist a player will now give a message stating how long is left before they can use the assist system.
  • A right-click option has been added to Ocellus to quickly make ascension crossbows.
  • Toad egg sacs now have a right-click option to withdraw the toads in noted form.
  • The primary option on beast of burden familiars is now 'Store' instead of 'Interact'.
  • A deposit box has been added to the Champions Arena.
  • Players can now complete the task "The Power of Lava" with the TokHaar-Kal cape.
  • Players can now store portents of restoration in their beasts of burden. The healing effect will still only occur while the portent is in the backpack.
  • The barrelchest anchor’s stats now closer reflect the requirements to obtain the weapon.
  • The sign of the porter will now bank phoenix feathers.
  • Players can now view tooltips for price and quantity for their Grand Exchange offers from the collection interface.
  • A message will now display in the chat window when a players incubated egg is ready to hatch.
  • Monkfish fishing spots now have "Net" as the primary option instead of "Harpoon".
  • The Keris special against Kalphites now occurs more frequently.

Such content. Seriously all high levels got this month was a poll and some auras. Copy-paste POP's, slayer tweaks, and a boss no one will ever do are the reason this game has to rely on SOF for profits

Seems like a good update. Glad mid-level players have got a good boss for PVM and the drops seem actually useful (roots and the potions, maybe not the shield but mid-level players might find it so).

Obviously the T5 auras + divination aura are awesome, I am raging I recently spend a lot of my loyalty points on other auras (still useful, but would rather T5 in the ones I use the most, plus really want those div ones).

I am laughing at the refer-a-friend change though. NOW you are worried about it be exploited, after everybody and their mother who would use it have been for some time. Still glad it has been *adjusted*.

That's what I think when people whine about seismic > :D

Still an annoying boss, not really worth the 22k drops :c. Shame the potion doesn't work on herbs too.

haven't had a mole nose drop in 5 kills, thought those were "always" ?

Good boss to let noobs get to know PvM a bit, it's still very boring and the 22k drops aren't going to make me rich XD. Imo that  babyspoonfeeding is ruining gaming in general but I guess that's just me... Mole can now be stunned, do this, do that!

A shame they didn't remove the most annoying part of the boss, the huge area >.< It is a bit better though, does anyone know if hardmode drops are a tad better?

Don't you need to be wearing the falador shield for the nose?

EDIT: Ninja'd!

The past few months have been nothing but high level updates. At least there's something useful to this that can benefit everyone (the thing that wipe DOT effects) so that's cool.

I mean it's pretty neat for low levels.

think it's only if you have fally shield 4 :P sorry fork

Not any more.

Faster, not easier.

It's still the exact same action with the same levels of AFK-ability, just that the number that shows up is 5% bigger.

So, old Jot was:

- Teleport to varrock (Magic; 1)

- Run north and steal from a guard (Thieving; 2)

- Kill him controlled with bonecrusher (Attack, Defence, Strength, Constitution, Prayer; 7)

- Cut a tree with Seers Headband (Woodcutting; 8)

- Light log and fletch a unstrung bow (Firemaking, Fletching; 10)

What other 10 skills could we add to the cycle to get Supreme JoT's requirements with least amount of effort?

Faster makes it easier since you have to spend less time/money.  Nobody likes a nit picker. :P

  1. Ranged
  2. Runecrafting
  3. Construction
  4. Dungeoneering
  5. Agility
  6. Herblore
  7. Crafting
  8. Slayer
  9. Hunter
  10. Mining
  11. Smithing
  12. Fishing
  13. Cooking
  14. Summoning
  15. Farming
  16. Divination

Those are the remaining skills

Herb run (Farming)

Clean herb (Herblore)

Set traps up in HH before checking those herbs

Cross vine (Agility)

Hope you got a common jadinko (Hunter)

Summon any familiar (Summoning)

Superheat a bar (Magic & smithing) (Lets you use a teletab to get to Varrock if you want)

Create your divine yew (Divination)

Cut a gem (Crafting)

Do JOT normally, except kill another guard with ranged (Ranged) and cook a fish on the fire (Cooking)

This is the best that I can come up with. You could also kill jadinkos for slayer if you have a jadinko mask.

Remember that you don't have to rush it if you do something efficient while it's active.

I'd think ranged is an obvious addition.

Maybe cooking via gen store or something.

Smithing could be achieved via superheat.

Mine an ore just outside the city for tht purpose.

Clean a herb for a fifth.

Crafting something at the bank or do clay craft in barb vil

Fish something at barb too.

Rc at air altar

Then I'm thinking agility shortcut.

Then prob div or hunt for 20
