D. V. Devnull
So I was checking something else on the web, and ran afoul of this... Gamasutra - GameSpy ceasing all hosted services this May (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/214700/GameSpy_ceasing_all_hosted_services_this_May.php) ...and this... Gamasutra - Devs, gamers angry over Glu's handling of GameSpy Technology (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/183309/Devs_gamers_angry_over_Glus_handling_of_GameSpy_Technology.php) ...and realized that every game out there that depends on the GameSpy MultiPlayer List Servers will be rendered unable to get players into multiplayer game rounds soon. A technology that's been around about 16 years (at least as far as I know), and now all of us gamers out there are about to have the metaphorical floor ripped out from under us. Maybe I'm crazy, but we didn't deserve to have this happen to us because a bunch of developers didn't pay their bills? And heck, what happened to advert support on the GameSpy websites handling server costs? At least, that's what I used to think was keeping them running. Oh well... There goes the ability for some games I play to be useful for anything more than single player. Yeah, discuss, obviously... ~Mr. D. V. "Tripping across the bomb-droppers..." D. V. Devnull
are there any good gamespy games anyway? From what I've understood, there are many. The most well-known of all the existing games depending on GameSpy's list servers is the original "Unreal Tournament" (UT'99), which is still going right now at over 600 servers as viewed by GameTracker ( http://www.gametracker.com/search/ut/?searchipp=50#search), and there are likely many more not listed that are active. There's also its' family-friendly child, "Nerf ArenaBlast", which also depends on the same server list system as UT'99. You can also add in Electronic Arts' "Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2", the sixth game ever released in the NFS series. I'm sure the list goes on, but I'll leave it to you to seek a longer listing of games if you wish. ~Mr. D. V. "I'm not going to get stuck in a long list right now." Dizzle229
It always sucks when a multiplayer service goes down. Swat 4 (run by GameSpy, in fact), died pretty much as soon as I got it. This is really bad news, hopefully there's some way to continue without official support. Get back here so I can rub your butt.
