They have to bring everything up to date not only for graphics.

The best way to "save" RuneScape IMHO is to rework a lot of things from the start. Like ... delete them and do them from square 1.

Most of the mechanics are outdated, some of the skills are outdates even in-game speaking (smithing, d'oh). If they want to milk the cow - sure add a new skill. If they want the game to survive AND attract AND keep new players - reconstruct it (no Construction pun intended).

Their biggest error over the years was probably that they did not keep pace with reworking old content.

They should've had clear thresholds for graphics and gameplay that when something reached it immediately got on a high priority to do list for rework.

That way skills would've been reworked long before they became broken skills with semi-attempted fixes slapped on that in themselves now need a rework.

Plus that way they'd of been constantly rewriting older code to slightly newer better functioning code when there wasn't a huge leap to be made, opposed to having like decade old coding messes that you can't just tidy/upgrade easily instead you have to look to entirely rewrite from the ground up.

That being said it wouldn't be too late to save the game in that extent. Rejig the teams so its 50:50 or 70:30 focus on rework vs new content. Start big and work your way down the list allowing focus to drift back to new content when the big rework items (skills and minigames) are cleared whilst leaving enough focus for the smaller work to continue - graphical overhauls, tweaks etc (essentially ninja fixes on a slightly larger scale).

If they were systematic about it it needn't be an overly chaotic process to deal with since fundamentally the gatherer skills and artisan skills can be near carbon copies of each other. Ie recode mining from the ground up then you can copy and paste that code and swap in trees/fish for ores and cut a solid 70% of the work out of reworking wc and fishing - the remaining 30% being graphics, new top end and any extra mechanics to fix up or to add in.

I would really like an emphasis on updating the graphics as well as the skills this year. In the second half of 2012 and the first half of 2013, they had a massive push on graphical updates that came seemingly out of nowhere. They completely overhauled Al-Karid, Draynor, Rimmington, The Wizards Tower, Castle Wars, the GE and pretty much all of the dungeons, all while keeping a regular weekly update schedule. It really showed how quickly they can update things when they want to. I would really like to see another push on rejuvination like this again.

I personally would like port phasmatys redone the most, because whilst theres not a lot specifically in the town, i go through it a heck of a lot heading to celestials, araxxor, farming runs, penguins etc and it looks dire. Others in need are places like Ardy and Yanille, thoough ardy would deffinitely be a massive project.  If the game is going to survive it needs to be completely updated to the standards of 2014.

Ardy was updated once in its history.

I think Ardy can be placed in line with Fally... Both have had a reaphical revamp in their history, but could use some polish to be up to standards. Heck, Fally looks the same in old school as it does in rs3, but it doesn't look bad, per say.

Yanille however, has never ever been touched.

And though I want it to be, I also equally want to be preserved forever!!! =3

It is preserved through OSRS.

There is a reddit compiling the december 20 Q&A stream here:

http://www.reddit.com/r/runescape/comments/2pqkyr/tldw_031_mod_mark_qa_vorago_rewards/

There isnt much more than a lot of vorago fanboyism going on. They have an outfit of omens and new bombi vorago pet. I guess the soul reaper outfit wasnt enough for pvming. Also the biggest disappointments are:

- hiest didnt go as they planned and not enough players playing it

- voice acting has pretty much been disappointing

- seasonal highscores didnt go as they hoped

- admitted their BA rework wasnt justified by the current player use

I wonder if im just having a negative day. A lot of the things listed in the info dump have this negative vibe.

Something tells me that they'd axe noncombat outright if they had the chance to rework everything. There's a fair bit to suggest that they don't really know what to do with skilling anymore, even getting away from how much they've been emphasizing bosses lately.

I can still remember the falador graphical update though :P Everything was made white. This was when RS was still in fixed mode for everyone though.

TBH it's not so hard ...

You kill a monster - you get part 1. Can't get it from anywhere else (except trading).

You use gathering - you get 100(0) of x. Can't get it from anywhere else (except trading).

You use an artisan skill - you make part 2 using the 100 (or 1000) of x and combine part 1 + part 2 to make a weapon/armor w/e makes you happy. Can't make it another way (can buy the end result).

Monster hunting - profitable

Gathering - profitable (can't make/repair them weapons/armors with using the gathering skills)

Artisan skills - profitable (can't make/repair ... meh same as the above)

Right now everything drops the end results from the gathering/artisan skills making them useless. Why bother levelling up smithing to 99 if some mid-range monster can drop the end results en masse.

I got a loot beam I can't use and a bunch of tiny xp lamps. Hmph!

On the other hand, I'll forgive it just because the snowboarding was pretty sweet.

try snowboarding in real life :D

yeah, it would be sweeter if they didn't keep plowing loads of development time into once off features

ehh some of it is recycled as has been mentioned... but you're right in a way

Has time to rework graphics of Skeletons that no one fights and no one cares about, but has no time to do 3 animations per pets so they can override familiars, something which everyone wants. He's their Senior Animator, and then they have the temerity to claim, sorry, we don't have enough animators to do pet animations. Awesome!

Well all of the animations are already there anyways... its a matter of plugging the things in.

You can't just scale down the attack anims like that for the pets, if it was that easy they'd do it.

the logic of "do the graphical update i want or never update graphics again" :/

Well, at the rate people insist "old graphics were better!" continuously...

"Fight for what you believe in, and believe in what you're fighting for." Can games be art?

Imo the only thing better about the old graphics is that they were at least more consistent around runescape. Especially quest areas haven't been updated in ages. The holy grail for example... (ugh those few polygons of the black knight titan) and for example I just completed Enlightened Journey and crashed because I forgot to move one step down at the last step. The island I crashed on had old looking trees. This makes old quests less fun.

imo they should update the most outdated graphics when they are not part of something that gets updated in the future (for example whole varrock might get updated with the upcoming quest). They don't have to be big updates, as long as they update the oldest graphics I am happy.
