Legacy Mode – Launching Monday 14th July

Following your great feedback and many weeks of updates to the Legacy Mode beta, and the recent poll in which over 80% of you overwhelmingly voted for the introduction of Legacy Mode; we are now ready to release.

Legacy Mode is a way of playing the modern RuneScape game with a traditional look and feel, without the need to learn the new combat system.

Our aim was to give players the freedom to choose how they play - we want players to use Evolution of Combat because they want to, not because they have to – that’s why Legacy is an optional mode that you can switch on or off, allowing you to choose if and when you use it.

Legacy mode includes:

  • Traditional RuneScape combat, with no abilities.
  • Interfaces styled from the pre-RS3 - both resizable and fixed.
  • Old-style minimap icons.
  • Life points back to a max of 990.
  • Old-style combat animations and stances
__________________________________________________________________________________
Global Updates to Combat

Independent of Legacy Mode, we will also be introducing the following global changes to combat to make improvements for everyone, especially in PvP:

  • Voted for back in February by you; we will be reinstating the '138' combat formula, tweaked to give melee, ranged and magic equal contribution.
  • Special attacks on weapons that had them previously.
  • Critical hit chance will be replaced by strength bonuses which give higher max hits.
__________________________________________________________________________________
Future Combat

Our aspiration for Legacy Mode was to allow players the choice of combat system whilst not alienating one system against the other. Watching so many of you enjoying both modes makes us confident that we have cracked it. Both Legacy and EOC will become optional modes that can be switched on or off, so you can choose which mode you want to use and when.

Our commitment to making combat great again doesn’t stop with the launch of Legacy Mode. Later this month we will be launching our most ambitious boss encounter ever with the introduction of Araxxor’s Lair which we know will quickly become a fan favourite.

On top of that we will be looking to make even more improvements to both EOC and Legacy in the future.

For a detailed breakdown of all of the fixes we have made since Beta, and the features we’ll look to add in the future check out the Legacy Mode Beta Forums.

We look forward to seeing you and your friends all on Monday!

The RuneScape Team

With the official announcement of Legacy-Mode, I figured it'd be easier to keep all the discussion relating to EoC/Legacy as well as any other combat-mechanics in a singular thread as well as the official launch-post when it hits monday.

Is it me or does this feel rushed? Other big changes they have released have taken more time. I guess with this change they have involved a lot of resources, perhaps just as much Development and QA time as others. I'm just really worried about issues with EoC from this...

I'm looking forward to the two weeks - 1 month of nostalgiascape waves of raised activity. Followed closely with the waves of whining that legacy can't beat the top end new content; followed equally closely by the metascape fact that eoc is more efficient. Leading to the inevitable 'death' of legacy where it is used by the select few that refuse to even try eoc but won't quit and a niche pking crowd that, quite "surprisingly", won't be half as big or busy on the live servers once dying has consequence and people can't get top end gear to risk for free and thus everyone gets bored of the same old welfare gear not worth killing for moneys.

I mean sure for some people legacy will be good, but I feel like its all pre-launch hype that isn't going to really, truly have a lasting impact in terms of pking being resurrected, drawing in higher player figures or altering the way combat progress overall.

Personally I can not understand why anyone would want to go back to the old style fighting. EoC with abilities are more fun, a more evolved style of fighting and where you, as a player, is more in control of the outcome.

From a selfish perspective at least, it will be nice to be 126 combat without every "noob" matching max level with just a couple 99s ;).  Fun fun.

Does seem to have come much sooner than anticipated.  I'm hoping it won't be as buggy as the Beta currently is...

It was voted for by the public to introduce it in the current state to the live game.

Well yeah, the choices were "introduce it right now" or "throw it away". JagexPollsTM

Basically all that changes is that you need 99 HP and 98 prayer on top of your two EoC 99s... I'm going to be 125 F2P combat with 86 strength, a couple of levels from the latter requirement... Basically exemplifying everything that the people who voted for 138 thought it would fix O:)

Couldn't agree more with what Sy said: I'll be damned if the wildy outside Edgeville is filled with people lvl 90 gear, its just too much of a risk for a low chance of a reward.   People will risk typical warband gear for a few weeks, then once the hype has died down the wildy will be empty again.                      I really hope they have more plans up their sleeves, like was previously mentioned with plans for pvp specific gear from minigames, or creating genuine reasons for people to enter the wildy. Otherwise this will have been a waste of time

Makes life easier for me but I'll likely continue using abilities. Can finally get 99 Slayer with reasonable methods

Really didn't care for the EOC combat. Recently came back to try out the main game again and I really like the Revolution upadate. I can imagine the Legacy changes will draw me back in long enough to max again.

I personally would like Old-combat back, but to keep the NIS layout. I play Final Fantasy XIV for ability mashing, I like to play Runescape for the simple click of a button.

With this getting released so soon it will for sure be filled with bugs. Even more dev time will then have to be used to fix those bugs. Plus of course loads of balancing. And for what? A temporary increase in player numbers and some PvP action. Then the hype is going to die down again. Instead of putting in new content that could have attracted new players into the game Jagex decides to get back nostalgia players. This is such a complete and unnecessary waste. I am actually quite the bit irritated. And I get even more irritated when I think about what we could have had instead: Maybe Priffdinas could have been out by now if we hadn't had this let's-get-back-to-2007-in-RS3-too-attitude.

And about democracy: Yes, I know this was voted for in a poll. But let us just wait and see who was right about all this? I believe in Sy's predicition myself.

So much waste of time and resources -.- .

Now if they closed 07 servers at the same time as releasing Legacy that would bring back the PVP crowd.

Hopefully Legacy mode will fix the fact that combat in revolution/momentum is unresponsive crap, and your character regularly ignores commands to eat/pray/move/attack while in battle.

Or that revolution does like 1-3 auto-attacks before starting the rotation.

Its currently a bug and not intended. They plan on patching it soon.

I'm more frustrated at the fact that they segregated the game community with Old School. I would have rather seen the legacy changes than splitting the population.
