Jagex refunding items | Server disruptions

Why do people even do it? to stroke their 16yo e-peens? They're like the kid in class who thinks because he burns stuff he's cool.

They lack exciting lives and have nothing better to do with their free time. Or they're chemically imbalanced. Can't really think of any other reason why someone else would waste their time on such an activity lol

I don't know what those other games may have going on, but this certainly seems to coincide with the release of Soul Reaper, an activity most hampered by frequent server disruptions.

Lol I wonder how lvl 90 weapon prices are right now

From what I heard they've been targeting 07 Streamers, and NightmareRH decided to annoy these guys and so made it worse. Also I heard another story that it was to do with 07's changes to the death mechanic. No idea if these are true, but I could believe RH being a [bleep] like this.

I don't think he annoyed them as such, more encouraged it.  The same happened when Lizardsquad targeted Gross Gore - he gained a LOT of viewers and attention.

Lizardsquad suggest they are targeting larger online gaming companies to prove that our money isn't spent well, and that the companies should be spending profits to strengthen their infrastructure and protect themselves from such attacks.. oh how noble of them! [/sarcasm].

It's all bogus though, there is literally no way to protect yourself from a flood of requests... [except the amazing CDN CloudFlare LOL) a server has an assigned IP.  This IP is made available to anybody who connects to the server.  This IP can be the target of mass flooding (in this case via DDoS and botnet).  It's a lose-lose situation.

The only major difference this time is the sheer amount of requests.. because of a Java exploit and some clever botnet distribution of a DDoS program [read: LOIC alternative], an attack on one world (NightmareRH's streaming world) resulted in ALL worlds going down... I'd be interested to see just how much data was flooding the server :P

Jagex has taken it one step further and added 15 minutes to all graves in RS3, as an additional safety measure. OSRS also has an intricate temporary grave-esque system added. Nice work. This is the first time I have actually seen Jagex assume responsibility for their players and actually do something in a state of crisis.

Well, to re-add some of your usual cynicism, this is the one of the few times the problem doesn't originate from them :P

In real life MMO you don't get 99 smithing by making endless bronze daggers.

It isn't their fault, no, but it is their responsibility to protect their customers, and to keep their services (which we pay for, going and available). They are doing more than they have ever done in the past on that front, at least, which is of course a positive and welcomed step.

it's the illuminati. where is jesse ventura when you need him?

Just finished battling a defamation case against a dead navy SEAL, in case you thought the real justice system was less absurd than JAGEX's fiascoes.

Yeah, if they really want to watch the world burn they should just play D&D or write fanfiction like the rest of us!

These people are cyber terrorists; that's exactly what they are (I'm not going to sugar coat it). I hope they get caught and get treated as such.

Keep in mind these people aren't just targeting RuneScape. World of Warcraft and other large online games have been targeted as well (taking a few WoW servers offline).

We'll see in the news in a few weeks/months about a couple of them getting arrested. I'd be willing to put money down that the FBI and other agencies are already tracking them down.

It's a complete shambles at the moment, these weener whackers are actively going out of their way to ruin a lot of peoples leisure activity.  I'm not talking about the no-lifing RS'ers (they probably need a break), I'm talking about people like me, who work hard all day & come home to play RS for a couple of hours in the evening.

RS is used as my personal chill-out time, giving me a much needed ability to de-stress from work pressures - hence I still play the game.

I guess I'll just have to go & beat the kids...............................(joke!!)

Im in the same boat.

Frankly i think excuses like that ones posted about the hacktivists justifications are more of a blanket excuse. They use it to make themselves feel righteous. They are dealing with a company providing entertainment services. Now if you picked up and did what Snowden did thats a much more righteous thing. Keep in mind there are bad things that come from doing good things like this. As much as its necessary to have wistleblowers for the health of the community its still strongly hindered and viewed with much distaste.

His actions are actually totally the same as the unions in Belgium, the railway unions go on strike for every small thing (like not being able to take their 50+ day holiday during the summer months, or an administration building that got moved 350 meters and thus they have to walk "too much", and so on) and lay down all the work. Not a single train rides those days, yet the railways are nationalised, so every Belgian pays tax money for it. Needless to say, as a commuting student, I've missed a lot of courses, and even exams.

So yeah, I detest such people heavily...

To be honest, I'm surprised something like this didn't happen back when Jagex implemented a bunch of controversial anti-RWT updates several years ago.

Old news, but amusing how that guy completely fulfills the negative stereotype of a hacker >_>

If I remember correctly, it did. Back when Jagex implemented the trade restrictions (and before rwt'ers figured a way around it), i'm pretty sure they started ddos'ing the servers for a week or so.

That's strange; I don't remember anyone talking about DDoS attacks or experiencing any disruption. It's possible that some people did try but didn't have enough firepower to affect the servers.

Or more than likely weren't on during most of the attacks.

They've been happening around 6pm-1am eastern time.. 10pm-5am uk time, and most of the uk worlds weren't effected by this. One of my friends, due to his schedule, never noticed anything going wrong :p

Still, I find it kind of odd that Jagex never mentioned anything about those attacks. It might be because the company didn't want to give those people too much attention unless things really got out of hand.

But then again, DDoS attacks weren't that sophisticated back then. I think the biggest DDoS attacks that happened in 2007 were only about 40 Gbps or so, whereas today's attacks sometimes reach up to 400 Gbps.
