Is it too late to train summoning?

Back a couple of years back I avoided using the summoning skill entirely because I thought that the summoning skill was a ripoff of Pokémon. Needless to say I was an ignorant moron back then, and sure am glad I no longer am in that mindset.

 

But anyway, the summoning skill was introduced a long time ago. The style in combat has changed since then.

 

Back in the day it was worth using the summoning skill to make these annoying dogs in the Brimhaven Dungeon leave me the heck alone. But now that they are no longer agressive I don't have to worry about them anymore.

 

I'm not sure if the summoning skill is worth using nowadays, so I ask, is it too late to start training that skill? I wanna give it a shot. Which is something I should have done a long time ago, but like I said I was an ignorant moron which is why I didn't train the skill before.

 

If you're wondering what summoning items I have, all I have really are 275 gold charms. Yes I fight monsters, but I avoided picking their charms because like I said I was in an ignorant mindset.

 

I got rid of all the spirit emeralds and stuff like that as well.

 

I hope you guys can help me out. I know I can easily just read the guide, but I want advise on exactly what I'm referring to. Thanks for your time.

Now's just as good of a time as any. Hit up waterfiends with a crystal bow and you'll be fine.

I would advise against getting it up to like 80's for the save in gp but yeah no reason to not train it to atleast 67 for tort/bunyip

I would advise ignoring the advice that says there is no point getting it up into the 80s+ - the 3 most useful familiars in-game by far are the steel titan, the unicorn and the pak yak and levels 99, 96 and 88; not to mention the lava titan at 83 which is great for mining. Even in the few levels beyond the bunyip you have 69 for the fruit bat, a handy low-end money maker, and 71 the arctic bear, great for hunting.

 

Of course it is an expensive skill to train high, but thats no reason to not even attempt to reach the big hitters someday.

Yes, it is too late, sorry. They just closed the skill about an hour ago. You could've trained it had you started yesterday, but it's too late now :/

A fast way of training summoning would be using a Charming Imp. It item vacuums all Charms dropped from monsters. You probably do have good combat stats so I advice killing Hellhounds for charms. Unfortunately it does cost 134k Dungoneering Tokens. If you train a lot of Dungoneering it should be a great reward.

Alright, I just wanna say thanks for all your help.

 

I will use the guide to understand how summoning works. If I need any help with it, I'll just come back here and post.

 

I know I said this before, but I need to say it again. I'm very sorry about how ignorant I was about that skill couple of years back.

general slayer is a good way to get charms, waterfiends are a good way to farm crimson charms(most of your xp will come from these) as well as glacors for blue and crimson charms

Ok, I'm reading the posts again, and I am about to read the guide to summoning, but most of you suggest me to kill a bunch of monsters to get the charms.

 

Oh, so that's what the charms are for then. Honestly, I don't like to rush killing a bunch of monsters just to get a bunch of charms, I think I'm just gonna use the charms I have and collect them as I kill monsters as I usually do.

 

Yeah, I just like to take my time killing monsters.

 

Anyway, I will read the guide now.

Alright, I just read the guide and to be honest I'm not sure if I want to train the skill.

 

It looks extremely complicated to me. Not to mention very expensive.

 

It probably is worth it in the long run, but I'm not sure if I wanna train the skill.

 

I am giving the skill a chance though.

 

EDIT: I just finished using that skill for the first time and I am really getting into it. Yeah, I do think it's a good skill. I will use it more for sure.

 

Also I apologize for double posting, if I could delete a post I would. But I don't have that option.

I tried out the summoning skill, so I was fighting blue dragons and had the thorny snail which I summoned. But that snail didn't do a darn thing.

 

Isn't that thing supposed to help me fighting these dragons?

Did you use the Slime Spray scroll?  Or have attacking for familiars toggled off somehow?

Different familiars do different things.

 

Off the top of my head, you have

 

Combat familiars: Help you kill monsters

Beasts of Burdens: Hold items for you

Gathering familiars: Help you skill by boosting stats and/or generating items

 

Thorny snails are beasts of burden, so they don't really do much in combat, especially because their combat level is 23. Some nearby combat familiars are spirit mosquitos and spirit scorpions, which are pretty good against low level monsters. Your problem, though, is that blue dragons aren't that weak. You'll probably want something with a combat level of at least 80, so something like a spirit jelly would be good.

You know what? I'm going to use them like they're supposed to be used. Three extra slots might not be a lot, but it is worth it in the long run.

 

Also I have a question about the thorny snails. Do they drop the items they're supposed to keep for me when their time is up, or are they gone forever?

I really hope it's not the latter.

They drop and you have 5 minutes' warning to retrieve them from the floor.  You also get a warning and an audio sound at 60 and then 30 seconds before the BoB expires.

Hey, what do you know? I have another question.

 

What's the quickest way to recharge my summoning points? I think the home teleport to Karamja is the quickest way but I'm not sure.

Restore them at an obelisk, use a super restore, or summoning potion.  I'm not sure what the closest obelisk to whatever you are doing is, but it shouldn't be too difficult to work out from the world map ;).

Using familiars at sub 60 levels is kinda pointless so stick to normal combat and just pick up charms. Picking up charms and creating pouches are how you gain xp and using the familiars is just the benefit to training. Kinda like how burying bones on an altar trains prayer but using actual prayers does not level you up. At your levels combat should be fine without summonings help, and most high level players only bring familiars to high level bosses (except bunyip which is great for slayer).

 

The main familiars under level 95 don't do a lot of damage at all and instead are useful for storing items or healing. EOC made most familiars damage obsolete and jagex seems to not want to rebalance the stuff they threw off back in 2012.

 

List of useful summons:

 

Terrorbird (52): holds 12 items and scrolls recharge run

War tortoise (67): holds 18 items

Bunyip (68): Slowly heals you over time

Fruit Bat (69): scrolls drop food to heal you

Titans (79): decent damage and scrolls heal you

Nihil (87): I have no idea what they do but since they are new im assuming theyre useful

Univorn (88): Scrolls heal a ton

Yak (96): holds 30 items

Steel titan (99): scrolls do a ton of dmg

 

Stick to picking up charms as you do combat and your summoning will rise quickly

Falador lodestone has a stack of runes nearby that recharges your summoning points.

Yeah, you're right that I don't need familiars to help me fight monsters.

 

I can easily fight 100 steel dragons in a row without problem.

 

What I love about the pouches is the fact that they have a good high alchemy value, so I can just high alch all the pouches that I don't need.

Well, the problem with trading in stores is the fact that usually the shopkeeper will buy for less and less the more I sell to them, and they are lower than the high alchemy value.

 

Does this guy buy the pouches for more money than the high alchemy value? If so I am willing to give the guy a chance when I have the appropriate summoning level.

He'll buy the pouches all for the same rate in exchange for shards. You can sell the shards to a pet shop owner for a fixed 25gp each. I believe you get more than the alchemy value on almost all pouches, save maybe a few of the gold charm familiars.

It varies pouch by pouch (supply and demand in the economy may make it better some times and worse others). It's not a traditional shop and the value doesn't go down the more you sell.
