Stigma with Sexual Orientations and Identities

Recommended Posts

This pretty much sums the whole topic up:

It is within the Rules of Runescape that discussion and ideas with relation to sexual orientation (as well as religion and politics) is prohibited, and the reason for this is that it prevents arguements and abuse as well as shielding the community.

The target audience for Runescape is aimed at everyone, but the reason why this is in place is because there are people as young as 13 years old who play, and Jagex have a corporate responsibility to shield this from them until they come of age and are able to make their own decisions on the topics. When people suggest that this should be allowed in game, they fail to consider that parents of the children of who play this game are worrying about what they're being exposed to, and it's something we should all keep an open mind about.

With regards to the quest that you've mentioned, it's a topic of controversy however when we take the element of childhood into consideration, prince's marry princess's in fairytales, this is what they're taught, and this is what their parents expect.

There are gay communities / clans you can join, perhaps it's best you seek those out.

Just some good to know information about the author of this thread, and since this whole troll discussion is blossoming within this thread anyway:

I am not anti-gay by the way, just putting that in. You to me just became a whole lot less trustworthy though. If you really are interested in making RS better for gay people I don't think you would lie about who you are in game.

that is not me what the hell

Well, that is rather obvious. But it is who you say you are by your username - as well as in RSN and RSN in OSRS. So; Who are you?

On the subject of this not being appropriate for a kid's game: I disagree. We involve heterosexual romance in kids media alllllll the time; changing the genders of the people involved doesn't suddenly make it inappropriate for kids.

I still totally think OP's suggestions are unnecessary for Runescape; I just have to disagree with that particular line of reasoning against it.

No. If it were put into the game, it would cause a lot of controversy for almost zero benefit, and thus it would be a net negative. It's not worth whatever little dev time it would take to code, not to mention how many folks would react.

Also, dude, there's an edit button on your posts; use that instead of posting multiple times in a row.

Also also: Either that quoted in-game PM is you, or your listed RSN is false, or your account has been compromised (highly unlikely). Your credibility is getting pretty stretched here, mate (and that has nothing to do with your sexuality).

I think I meant to come across more as it's not appropriate to ask them in game whether they'd like to marry the prince or princess directly for example, not that exposing them to it was inappropriate. Like people shouldn't be forced to give that kind of information to continue a quest whatever their age

Ehh... If the players understood the separation between the player and their character/avatar/whatever, then it's fine; you're not telling your sexuality, just your avatars, which may be different than yours. You wouldn't even be giving your sexuality, just choosing who to go with in this case, and that decision could be influenced by a number of things apart from gender and sexuality.

But that's definitely more borderline. That line of reasoning does make more sense than what I thought you (and others) were saying; thanks for clarifying.

my username here is my username in game

So, one of the following is true:

  • That quoted in-game PM is you
  • Your listed RSN is false and you were lying when you typed what I quoted
  • Your account has been compromised (highly unlikely)
  • That picture was photoshopped (also highly unlikely)
As I said, your credibility is getting pretty stretched here, mate (and that has nothing to do with your sexuality).

Observe1st is what I have been told is your real username. If you wish to support gay rights, why not just create an account on here that is linked to that one (by stating it as your RSN) and promote a gay event through that one? It should make people recognize you easier and the discussion can also continue in-game. I really fail to see any other reason to why you are acting like you are right now unless you really are trolling. If that is what you are doing that is just horrible. The gay community really deserves some discussion and to be brought up "in the spotlight" in the gaming world. But to do it in this way is totally wrong.

I agree, I don't view my character as me but a seperate entity, it's just an avatar to me. Some people do play as if it's themselves though so they may think they were being asked that, I don't see the need to appease some to potentially upset others in that particular case on the quest :D

I would like to thank everyone who was diligent in keeping their posts respectful and as non-inflammatory as possible, which has been pretty much everyone who posted on this thread.

I want to be perfectly clear that tip.it has absolutely no problems with anyone on the basis of ethnicity, gender, orientation, or religion, and we welcome such discussions, with some provisions on the appropriate boards for some topics as outlined in our rules. What we will not abide are people using straw man arguments such as misconstruing disagreement with a personal idea as an attack on someone's ethnicity/gender/orientation/religion. We will also not abide anyone who uses sock puppets in a debate for any reason, be it to lend support for their own side, or to provoke the other side into being hostile. Lastly, we will not stand for people impersonating another user's account name in RuneScape, and then coming onto our forums and attempting to troll our community with that name.

I will also mention that among all the pending moderation actions to be taken against various account, the OP's name will be force changed as the actual owner of that name wishes to make an account here with their own name.
