Rule Change - Larger Signatures

Recommended Posts

The Moderating team has amended rule 2.4 - Signatures and Avatars to allow for images totalling up to 700 x 300 pixels, and up to 750kb. We hope this will provide our users with more flexibility when creating their signatures. Please note that the restrictions on total image and line count remain unchanged, only the image dimension and file size restrictions have been relaxed. The rule now reads as follows (changes in red):

2.4 - Signatures and Avatars
Forum Signature Limits are 700 pixels wide by 300 pixels high by 750Kb file size. There is a 10 image limit to a signature, but the combined dimensions/file size of all the images may not exceed 700 x 300 pixels x 750Kb. Avatar limits are 100 pixels wide by 100 pixels high, by 100Kb file size. Images in hide tags are still subject to our size restrictions. For signatures with images (regardless of size or how many) there will be a limit of 4 lines of text or 10 lines of text if you put them inside a hide tag. Each use of quote tags counts as one line of text in addition to the number of lines being quoted. In the case of signatures without images, please exercise common sense with the amount used. Excessive text in an imageless signature and other excessive or disruptive images or text will be removed at a moderator's discretion.

We do not permit racial or sexual references/proclamations in signatures or avatars. This includes images and text. Religious references are allowable in signatures/display names/profiles so long as the reference is not negative or bashing other groups. Racial and sexual orientation content is permitted in the About Me section of profiles only, as long as the content is not bashing another race/sexual orientation. All religious, racial, and sexual orientation references are subject to removal at a moderator's discretion if abuse is suspected and will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

All other Tip.it Forum Rules apply in signatures, avatars and profiles (including the About Me section). However, the board Administrators reserve the right for final authorization and may approve, request you to change, or outright remove any image or text regardless of size, especially if it's deemed inappropriate.

Our full listing of rules can be found here.

Note that anyone who does not wish to view signatures on our forums can disable them under Account Settings>Ignore Preferences.

Please feel free to provide any feedback you have on this change.

The taller they get, the harder it gets to find the conversation without turning signature display off. :(

[Edit: And I like being able to see signatures, as long as they're not out-of-hand. :? ]

Not a huge fan of larger dimensions, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

Great to see, changed my signature a little  !

Dear Arceus,

You signature is 430 pixels too tall. when you read dimensions it's width by height. Please adjust properly.

The images in my signature are:

380 wide x 112 tall on top of

350 wide x 140 tall

So it's 380 wide by 252 tall, which fits well within 700 wide by 300 tall.

Added together, his signature is 380x252x136.29KB...

380<700

252<300

136<750

...Where's the issue? If they were side-by-side he'd exceed the 700 width, but they're stacked vertically.

Also, for those who dislike the change, I thought I'd mention that you can hide all or individual signatures:

Note the X in the top right.

Our signature sizes were a fair bit less then other communities. As in Arceus' example, two stat signatures was previously too tall. Now people can display two accounts in their signatures, for example.

Total mental lapse on my part, it's been a busy day, my apologies to Arceus. I don't have a problem with wide signatures, it's tall ones that annoy the shit out of me because of how how much they stretch the page.

Is there a way to allow users to selectively hide staff signatures? I'm not given an option to hide anyone's signature from the moderating team.

It's okay :).  Does anyone have an idea if/how I might be able to have a dynamic RuneTrack signature that is 350px wide instead of 380px?  Then I could put both images side-by-side.  I have a feeling it would not be so easy though.

Realistically, the 50 extra pixels shouldn't cause you to scroll much farther. Worst case scenario is that you have at most an extra 1000px that add to page length (20 max posts per page * the difference between old and new sig height) but this scenario is also the least likely as most users do not max out their signature space. Even taking into account tablets and smaller monitors, the resolution of those monitors is such that this should have a negligible impact on user viewing.

But alongside pageload times and other factors, we can keep an eye out over the next month or two to see if anything else needs changing. Nothing to have a coronary over :P
