Darklight Upgrade Concerns - Mod Rowley

punishing people for not having level 90 weapons by making more monsters with stupidly high def and/or accuracy that tears through armor like tissue: ok because they're scrubs who can't play gud

punishing people for not using a weapon that can be obtained by falling off a log: UNACCEPTABLLLLLLE!!!!!!!

That's fine because kalgerions were balanced around being annoying to kill, even with t90 magic, so the slayer xp reward was justified given the defence of the demons. Edimmu are the ones with low slayer xp, not the other way around.

In real life MMO you don't get 99 smithing by making endless bronze daggers.

Fixed a post of mine, because people were thinking it was a post made by a Jagex Moderator when it was actually mines that I quoted over from the RSOF.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be?~ Marianne Williamson

Maybe because Edimmu have absurdly low Slayer exp for their level? :P One of the main complaints when they got released was the abominable exp for the effort.

That was the complaint (and I think i made it too), but now with the passage of time and some distance with which to reflect, Edimmus aren't that bad. Yes, they give relatively low experience given their HP (when compared to other monsters who have similar HPs, such as Airuts, Kalgerions, and Celestials). However, because of Salve (e) + Slayer Mask, you have a significant accuracy and damage boost and consistently hit like a truck on them. So they're pretty decent experience (I think 130K-150K per hour), and the blood necklace is a nice drop for some decent money, as are their Fire Talisman and Uncut Diamonds (both of which are noted) drops. Then there's also the pet, and they're pretty easy to access as well with a close by bank.

I am not saying they couldn't use an experience boost, but they aren't totally terrible as it stands.

In case for future confusion, it apparently only stacks for Eddimus. Salve + Slayer helm doesn't work anywhere, but these Eddimus.

“I had a feeling we weren’t coming back from this fight when it began.”

“Do you have any regrets?”

“I don’t. It seems surprising, I know, but I wouldn’t change a thing. This is how it was meant to be.”

“Huh, you never really notice how lovely the day is until you realize you’ll never see it again.”

“Mmmhmm.”

So apparently Darklight has been nerfed now?

I can't imagine it being nerfed on a weekend and they were still taking feedback as far as i'm aware. I wouldn't really expect a change till at least the end of April, unless they bring down a mighty fine nerfhammer to it.

I will test it in a moment after having done most of my dailies. Stay tuned!

I know right but my friend who has been taking advantage of its enhanced capabilities recently insists that he's doing 2k less damage with it than before. He could be mistaken of course but he was rather insistent. Maybe someone would care to try it out to confirm?

This night I also felt I hit a tad less, I get to see a lot less 5-7k hits, but might just be a misconception on my part.

I am noticing the same too. Might be just a coincidence, but from the 3h I so far did today, it felt slower than the 3h I did yesterday. My tests do show this in terms of kills/h. So far today I am averaging about 177 kills per hour opposed to yesterday a lot more with a top of 360 kills in an hour. That hour tho I didn't pick up anything and I was just blasting through with sum pots and everything, with bleeds and titan killing the demons off.

It's not speculation though. It's refusing to share any information about what has clearly already been modified on the live game!

okay, Jagex, we get it, you don't like it when it's blatantly obvious that you are unable to provide enough variety in armaments to create strategic depth or your inability to bridge the gap between reasonably obtained weapons and gear that costs 100m, please don't punish us

Could be that they're still fiddling with it, so this isn't necessarily the final state of things... but I agree that this is sketchy reasoning.

Obtained quest cape and base 92 before obtaining any 99s! Currently finishing out my 99s with the (long-distant) goal of comp cape.

We have a fix incoming ASAP. [EDIT - fix should now be live.]

We've kept it simple - the problems arose with the upgrade to Darklight, so that's what we've targeted. Additional requirements would only have limited the problem, not corrected it. Any other issues that have been highlighted by this (e.g. that some player don't find kal'gerions worth killing) should be resolved in separate updates.

When the fix goes LIVE, Darklight will work akin to other, similar niche weapons - e.g. Keris - in that it has a potent effect, but one that does not trigger on every hit. We have slightly reduced the accuracy of the upgraded version of Darklight, but also the frequency at which the effect triggers, which is based on the toughness of the demon. It makes sense that tougher demon = greater resistance.

It should make Darklight a viable alternative against demons well beyond the levels at which it can be obtained, and typically the best choice against demons that have a melee weakness. It is also probable that we will add more demon mobs with a melee weakness in future updates, giving Darklight greater utility.

Monster weakness is still likely to be the deciding factor in what equipment you choose, though some players at some levels, and in some instances, will still have reason to opt for Darklight instead. Of course, your personal mileage will vary - e.g. if you have the ability to wield T90 gear, for instance, then you should probably stick to using T90 gear...in most cases.

Jagex needs to pay for anyone who designs content a few courses in game design, because obviously they can't learn on their own.

Wonderful, so they completely ignored player feedback in the thread they made for that explicit purpose and instead completely undid any and all usefulness Darklight had.

Well done, Jagex.

The Jagex Item Upgrade Methodology.

1) Identify item that is severely under-used, but should have a nice niche.

2) Develop an upgrade for said item resulting in it being very useful

3) Release said upgrade and then panic because people ACTUALLY use it and therefore it makes drop values change.

4) Ask for feedback on what to do because you don't want to just nerf it as it should still be useful.

5) Carefully print all feedback off for a thrilling lunchtime game of waste bin basketball

6) Nerf the hell out of the item

7) Act as though you are doing it for the greater good and are genuinely bemused why the item suddenly isn't being used anymore and categorically deny that you actually nerfed it in such a way its even worse than it was before being upgraded

8) Take sick leave to avoid any fall out from player backlash and anger caused to mods who made the upgrade and have seen their work be ruined by knee jerk reactions

9) Allow dust to settle and hope no-one tries to upgrade that item again for a few years

10) Notice a dip in income and get the SGS/TH guys to make a limited used promo, money grab item that is 10* more op than the now nerfed upgrade

11) Sit back smugly in leather chair at how you have out smarted the playerbase and made everyone happy secure in the knowledge your creating 'useful' content players are happy with and definitely did not kneejerk nerf something because you asked the players right?
