Am I the only one who's reading it as 'Once you unlock {Champion X} from a champion scroll one time, you can fight {Champion X} every week until eternity' for each individual champion? So once you got the scrolls once you're done?

"Fight for what you believe in, and believe in what you're fighting for." Can games be art?

If you unlock the scroll and kill the champion in the current game, you could never battle them again. It was a one time paltry reward.

Now they're letting you fight champions you've already unlocked and defeated on a weekly basis as a distraction and diversion event.

I don't think the article is clear on whether or not you can fight ALL the champions you've unlocked per week or just one. But yes, you can do that for the rest of your Runescape career by what the article says. Since it's a devblog though, everything is subject to change.

Of course that's what it says. I don't see any other way you could reasonably interpret it.

60k xp a week if you've found every single scroll, though, that's still not very impressive. It's going to be less than Tears if Guthix, certainly less than Jack of Trades, probably comparable to, like, the Jade Vine, maybe. And Jade Vines aren't exactly a premium D&D.

60k is fine considering the D&D is banking off several game play aspects such as slayer targets are training targets (mind you they were more sought after during the time of the D&D's release). The champions are still fairly easy to beat except a couple require some thought. Besides I'm pretty sure they are being generous with a slayer xp reward. Every slayer xp reward we get seems scaled to the likes of hp xp rewards.

The D&D's reward is on par with other D&Ds (Urza's position) but the time and effort to unlock the full potential of this D&D is unlike any other and generally worthless to do given how hard champ scrolls are to obtain (Troaccid's position)

So you're both right.

Shocker.

The sad thing is with Champs Challenege it doesn't sound as if they are making the one change really necessary for it to become actively used - the rarity of scrolls.

They said they wouldn't improve the drop rate cause they're scared trimmed Compers will have a [bleep]fit if they do.

I really wish they would dump this mentality. I spent hundreds upon hundreds of hours getting 99 runecrafting, then they released runespan, and suddenly I went from being in a somewhat elite class of less than 1000 players (at the time I got it anyway) to having a very common cape. Did I [bleep]? No. Why are compers so important that they have to leave horrible content the way it is, just for them?

A good rule of thumb I'd like to see them adopt: If it wasn't for compers, would anyone even bother doing this content? If the answer is no, then something needs to change.

They're either making a horrible miscalculation, or Comp Capers buy a lot of keys and Solomon items and they are afraid of losing that. I'm thinking the former is more likely though...

Was going to try block n load for the outfit. But takes a 5 gig download not counting play time. Ya cause i'm gonna add an extra 100$ + to my internet bill.

If there gonna start promoting other games can it be games that are at least similar to rs and are low on the mb usage.

Me behave? Seriously? As a child I saw Tarzan almost naked, Cinderella arrived home from a party after midnight, Pinocchio told lies, Aladin was a thief, Batman drove over 200 miles an hour, Snow White lived in a house with seven men, Popeye smoked a pipe and had tattoos, Pac man ran around to digital music while eating pills that enhanced his performance, and Shaggy and Scooby were mystery solving hippies who always had the munchies. The fault is not mine! if you had this childhood and loved it put this in your signature!

I was thinking about trying it, but I don't want to tie up my internet connection with that much of a download either...

I suspect Champs Challenge will see some extra foot traffic from people after 120 slayer, but it will only be the niche subset after both 120 slayer AND trimmed comp because the time taken to get the scrolls in the first place will cost more than 60k xp a week for several weeks.

Unless they actually have used my suggestion way back when they asked for stuff on this and made other more popular creatures drop some of the scrolls within reason (ie make all demons drop the lesser challenge), so there is more opportunity of getting them without going out of your way to massacre random non-assignment mobs.

I wonder how many people would do/complete things like chompies and champions if the XP waste mentality wasn't a thing.

In real life MMO you don't get 99 smithing by making endless bronze daggers.

They did in the past, probably about as often as they do today. Which is to say, very rarely. I'd almost suggest that the completionist mentality has been a stronger driving force for players throughout the game's life

the guestion is, is the 60K slay xp even gonna be that good? You can average like close to 150K slayer xp an hour on an ironman already. Probably more on main accounts.

Maybe you have to fight all of the 16 champions once a week to gain that 60K slay xp, which would probably still be faster but not by that much.

If it's only 1 champion it's pretty generous but even then I don't see people going after scrolls any more than usual.

Nobody. People used to play minigames and stuff because they were fun (and still are). Killing thousands of chompies is not really that fun and never has been.

“Do you have any regrets?”

“I don’t. It seems surprising, I know, but I wouldn’t change a thing. This is how it was meant to be.”

“Huh, you never really notice how lovely the day is until you realize you’ll never see it again.”

“Mmmhmm.”

Don't you lie to me.  I got my 4,000 kills hat long before Completionist cape was even an idea.

Champs and Chompies I don't think got hit by the xp waste mentality. They were never popular because they took ages, were grindy and didn't really give anything back.

What has suffered from xp waste mentality is the assorted minigames that used to be popular and have ended up on the shelf as their rewards aren't really up to par. I really think most minigames they could 'rework' to a point of being quite popular again without even touching the game itself and purely sprucing up the rewards with some decent bonus xp for time spent pay outs.

I mean BA still runs decently thanks to bxp, as does cabbage face punch and heist. Stealing creation bubbles along reasonably thanks to the tools, PC enjoys good turn out thanks to the benefits of void armour. All of these are the multiplayer games that give something worth the time.

Conversely Soulwars, Trouble Brewing, Fist of Guthix, Mobilising Armies and Cwars all suffer from not having any rewards really worth the time investment. Admittedly Cwars does run, but only because of trim req, and MA just about runs, but again trim req causes this.

With re-playability Champs certainly has some appeal - but it still will be in the fail zone because of the grind/elitism barring progress to making it good. I mean did the rarity on them scrolls ever REALLY make sense? This is in the Champions Guild, this is a place you can reach with stats in the 40-50 region and yet the scrolls take more time and effort to acquire than gaining access to much higher guilds in the chain (heroes, legends and heck even max guild garden)

Well, I had almost all stuff for trimmed comp done before thode capes were released, bar that CW req, so yeah, I had done Champ Scrolls, as I wanted to engage in every piece of content except for PvP.

Although I'm aware this is a lost cause, they are called "Distractions & Diversions" not "Extermely time-limited metagame improvements to XP." What happened to just making something fun and cute to do once in a while, like random events were? .-.

Everything died to the Meta EXP mindset. That's why each new piece of content has to be the best in some way or it's DOA when released.

Most is anyway though.

Back after a 5 year TIF hiatus. Please don't mind me too much.

Even with the xp waste/200m all mindset getting into full gear in 2010/2011, competitive castle wars and dungeoneering were still extremely popular, you can blame eoc for the death of both of those.

Not true.

For content to survive it does not have to be the best all the time. It just needs to have a viable place in the metagame.

For example if they made a slow, afk but cheap prayer training method it'd do well as it would be a viable alternative to altaring bones. They were supposed to do that with cleansing stones in priff, but they managed to make them bad xp, slow and barely any cheaper which killed it.

We have an AFK prayer method though, or at least the framework for one - cremation. Very slow and not competitive enough to keep up with say altaring, but I feel like more lower level players could and should take advantage of it. Of course, the FM xp is kind of negligible and it is overall less XP than altars, so members have no real use for it. Perhaps an enhanced version of it in Prif to make it keep up (500% instead of 250%?)
