Adware, malware.. Need a spot of advice.

Hey Tip it community.

 

I recently installed a new extension on google chrome, and I've now discovered that every web page i go to.. I have pop ups galore.. It's seriously annoying me.

I have a pop up which is by a page called Razor web, whatever that means. I wish to remove it.. and I don't know how.

Any advice is highly appreciative.. If it comes down to it, I'll just do a factory reset on my laptop.

Remove the extension

Run a good virus/malware scan.

 

If that doesn't work check add/remove programs for anything that sounds fishy/you dont recognise and/or completely wipe chrome from your system and then do a clean install.

I use Adblock plus on Firefox, awesome little addon. Pretty sure they do a version for Chrome.

Yes but it seems the ads just started after the extention was installed.

 

I would remove the extention, set chrome to its defaults and run Malwarebytes and AdwCleaner.

Malwarebytes is a great free program to use in conjunction with your regular antivirus. I guarantee it will find stuff your antivirus doesn't.

Never had malware issues, so never bothered with malwarebytes.

Decided to run scans on all my systems just out of curiosity.

 

6 month old laptop - nothing found.

1 year old always on automated media box - nothing found

6-ish year old desktop pc that was cloned from a hard drive ~10 years old and upgraded overtime - nothing found.

 

Don't get me wrong, its a great little program and all, but good internet practice and a decent AV is enough to avoid malware 99.9% of the time. Really malwarebytes should not be finding anything unless you have done something to garner a malware issue - visited an iffy site or grabbed a dodgy extension etc. Same applies to your AV of choice you should not expect it to find anything because it is a safety net for if you do something wrong, not a battering ram to allow you to charge into dodgy content and let it soak up damage.

That's not the way Dat_Booty meant that but ok. Antivirus and Malwarebytes don't find anything on my computers either but that's because I have good internet practice and usually tell people to stick to their usual websites which are usually safe.

 

It's just that if there are some stuff that got on the computer, the antivirus is usually not enough to catch it all, and that's where Malwarebytes gets into play and catches what the antivirus missed.

You took my post too literally. All I meant is that using Malwarebytes with a regular av is good practice, since they both do not have the same virus database and Malwarebytes doesn't put extra strain on your pc as long as it's not running. I generally only browse gaming forums and social media but I often have Malwarebytes finding tracker cookies and other "harmless" stuff that MSE doesn't find. It's an extra piece of mind.

 

Also, I feel the need to point out that not all people have good internet practice. My sister is a great example of that, and my advice to use two AVs saved her from doing a fresh windows install a few times now. Just because something doesn't directly apply to you doesn't mean it's not a good idea.
