I remember back in the day posts came very often and just browsing the forums today, posts are few and far between?

Reddit, RSWiki and complete lack of support for fansites.

The biggest RS community is now on reddit. There is simply no way for any forums to compete with that. They have a huge user advantage over the traditional forums, plus their format is simply better.

Then there's the RS Wiki. As sad as it is for me to say, fansites are mostly dead. With how quickly the Wiki updates and a complete lack of support from Jagex, there simply isn't much of a reason to venture outsite of the Wiki and reddit. If you look around on reddit, you will see countless jmods posting there every single day.

I love Tip.It and I love this community of ours, but being honest, we really cannot compete with those 2 websites, no one can.

Forums are a declining medium and have been getting replaced by social media for years now. New forum development has been effectively killed and those that predate most social media are gasping for air.

Fansites themselves are doing a bit better but not much. I wouldn't say the RS Wiki is to blame. It's more the lack of new players. Experienced players don't need help as much as new ones. Also fansites support would help but it's not the major issue. Fansites and Jagex basically ignored each other until 2009ish and everything went fine. Though I agree that Jagex is giving clear preference to reddit by posting there constantly while ignoring older sites such as tip.it.

Although defeatism doesn't help the cause, the health of the fansite and the forums are largely out of the hands of tip.it and other fansites at the moment.

That and the current state of the game is clearly of one in decline.

I am pretty sure that has been said for 12-13 years now, and the game is still going - with existing and incoming players.

(Of course, at some point someone will be right when they "foresee" the doomsday of RS.)

You're accusing me of bigotry, how ironic. It's a nice attempt at argument, but your responses are facile and asinine, if not diatribe. Who's arrogant now?

Decline doesn't necessarily mean they think the game is on Death's doorstep.

I'm sure RuneScape will keep going for a few years yet, but there's no denying the player base and content quality has declined sharply.

I think Reddit is more accessible as some have said.

Sadly as new players come to RuneScape they'll use Reddit or RSW as wikipedia and reddit are two universal sites that everybody generally uses.

Just as people would rather tweet about an update than discuss it on a forum at times, social media has changed completely.

It's sad but it's just how it is.

even though I stopped playing RuneScape over 5 years ago, I still listen to Old RuneScape music when I study.  It's so damn nostalgic.

Hey, somebody got it in one for a change. :D

But yes, a shrinking player base, a decline in quality of updates, and a massive change in company philosophy/policy over the years are all indicative of this.

We can't compete with Reddit in terms of attracting new members, but that should not be mistaken as a sign that Reddit is better. It isn't. There's a real sense of community and history here. Also, when discussion does happen, it's a lot more in-depth. Reddit is basically just a hotbed of memes, trolls, bandwagon voting, and really, the only reason most go there (aside from its accessibility) is that it's a good place to get Runescape related news, because someone always post stuff there right away. That's it. Aside from the fact that news is instantly there, it's not really all that great. I certainly feel a sense of community and familiarity with the people on Tip.it (even if I don't have necessarily everyone added), whereas on Reddit 99.9% of the names - I don't know, nor do I do care to know about. This is a community, whereas Reddit is just the townsquare or marketplace where everyone goes to see a spectacle or get the news, without really knowing any of the people there.

And for what it's worth, we generally have the major update newsposts here pretty quickly as well. We don't catch everything that gets said on Twitter or livestreams, but usually someone has seen it and can share the info if needed.

I visit r/runescape and browse around sometimes, but I mostly stick to this for news and updates, and RSWikia and occasionally Tip.It for guides and info. I definitely agree that we have a sense of community that the other sites don't, though, and I love spending time in HYT chat even if we're not as active as we used to be.

Obtained quest cape and base 92 before obtaining any 99s! Currently finishing out my 99s with the (long-distant) goal of comp cape.

Don't forget the rise of the efficienci-anados, both here and in the game in general. As the focus went from discussing fun ways to play to what the right way and the wrong way is to train, there became much less to actually do on a forum. The right way to train each skill and the right way to make money can be easily looked up on a number of different sites, so these forums have become redundant (especially when questions on various topics are routinely "answered" by giving efficiency numbers).

Something else for everyone to take note of... With School being in-session currently, player counts in-game and users present on forums have also taken a severe hit for now.  Try looking forward to the summer vacations. ;)

I'm not so sure about that; it might just be the players I'm exposed to but the rs community seems to be older than it used to be, at least to the point where school vacation times aren't as big an influence as they used to be.  I'd bet that RuneFest couldn't have happened in 07 just due to lack of the audience's financial or familial independence.  I might be wrong, most of the people on here have aged with me and I certainly don't socialize in rs with many new people anymore.  I just honestly doubt that the waning audience numbers have much to do with school schedules anymore, and if over any future summer vacation this place becomes as active as it was in ~2010 I'll eat my 3DS.

It is older because the player base, from back in the old days when this game attracted new players, have all grown up. Even the 10 year olds from 07 should be out of high school now.

There is definitely a younger player base, but certainly a lot of the more established end-game players seem to be adults, there always has been a big adult playerbase for RS, but the ratio has shifted.

Looking at these forums or my time in clans - way back when in the early 00s there was maybe 25% of people I interacted with that were like 30s, 40s or higher. The rest of us were all around school age.

Now though I see maybe 20% school age, the 'us' from back in the day are all 20s and 30s and the adults from back then who still play are of course older too.
