I'm just starting to play RS again, so will be using tthe tip it forums.

Not interested in the reddit or the other social media platforms. Forums will always be the best. You get a family vibe from them..

Beg some people add me up in game though, having not played for so many years all my friends seem to have quit.

Scary Crayon :)

I like how people always talk as if reddit is not a forum - sure it's not your classic layout that screams forum but with user accounts, threads and replies its basically a forum.

It's definitely not a traditional forum. There's far too many people, a lot of the dicussion is pointless - albeit funny - memes and other trash, you barely get to know the people there, and so on. It's mostly a townsquare kind of thing where you go to get the news, it's not a forum. The discussion there is very shallow, ephemeral and fleeting, usually done for popularity (though, with the like system that exists on this forum too, but posts on Reddit get hundreds of likes, whereas on TIF, usually a handful at most), and most threads on Reddit are forgotten about in a day or two at most, as they disappear from the front page, whereas discussions on traditional forums can last forever, and there's depth to them, it isn't just a transparent popularity contest.

THIS! It's all about getting to know people on a forum. None of that on Reddit

It is a forum by the very definition of the word, but it's layout and style doesn't actually lend for any prolonged and lengthy discussion. It distills discussion down to short points or pointless altogether when actual thoughtful replies often go unnoticed due to the display style/upvote system. Basically it becomes like an echo chamber. It's unfortunate.

There isn't a whole lot of room for discussion on reddit... it's a very polarizing, circlejerk community. I was subbed to the 07scape subreddit for a while, but anytime I posted anything that went against the community zeitgeist, I'd just get downvoted into oblivion. If someone ever responded to my points, it was only to call me names lol

There was a thread a couple of days ago where someone was whining about getting PK'd in Deadman Mode-- you know, the mode where when you log in, the first thing the chatbox says is "Welcome to Deadman mode. On these worlds, you die." Someone in that thread made a comment along the lines of "the point of the game mode is to kill people; it's not supposed to be a safe game." He ended up getting about 100 downvotes for that comment. 100 downvotes! Amazing.

Don't get me wrong I'm not by any means saying the kind of environment or posting that Reddit receives is in anyway the same vibe as you get from an old school forum like here. They do foster different types of discussion etc.

My literal only point was that I find it interesting that even though Reddit is a forum, albeit it in a differing format to the 'classic' style, people make sweeping statements whereby 'forums' and 'reddit' are two different things.

I agree with your last statement. A forum is more conducive to holding focused conversations while reddit seems to favor fleeting moments.

I've never taken the time to understand Reddit because it just looks ugly, as far as I could tell it's just lists of questions with no sub categories.

I will always prefer this style of forum, it's a shame they are a dying breed.

Currently not active on RuneScape.

All I see here is that people are basically giving up by saying there's no way for us to compete with the other help/fan sites.

If more Tip.It members helped updating our database and used their time polishing old out-dated guides we would gain more popularity. It's simply a matter of trying. With or without J mods.

Each site has their advantages and disadvantages, we aren't done for, and we wont be thanks to those who are still keeping the site running and constantly updating the website.

If you see something that's missing, old or otherwise should be mentioned; Don't hesitate to report it out in the forums.

If I may; I'm currently working in reincarnating TMHT and at the same time spending time in updating the database. Anyone interested in joining the TMHT project please contact me as soon as you can. Happy holidays.

I really like TIF, and certainly do not like the lack of activity and popularity, but the times have changed. It really is not possbile to compete anymore. The predominant way to get news nowadays, for RS is Reddit, Twitter, RS homepage/forums, and Twitch. The predominant way to access high level and very up to date guides is to basically watch the top PVMers and Skillers streaming themselves on Twitch. That's not going to change and there isn't anything that can be done with that. That's just the way it is.

Yeah. The last time I consulted the Tip.It website for any game help was when 2007scape first came out and it was basically the only way to find info on the 2007 era... and that only lasted until the 2007scape wiki was up and running. I deleted my Firefox bookmark for Tip.It years ago since I never visited it; I only use the forums now

I disagree that there's no way to compete. I've been involved in a number of RS fansites over the years and each has been successful in their own way. You need to be able to adapt, you need to be ahead of the other sites with what you're offering and you need to do it well. This doesn't just apply to RuneScape, it applies to pretty much everything, not just games.

Tip.It is probably not the place where that can happen unfortunately, but that doesn't mean it can't happen elsewhere. Tip.It has not evolved when other communities came up and each of them have taken a slice of what this site used to have. I've not kept up 100% with this site since 2011 when I was admin here but it looks like not a lot has changed in that regard. There were definitely problems back then and I don't see any evidence of those problems having been resolved since.

So I agree that Tip.It can't compete but I don't agree that there's no way anyone can compete (which is what your post implies). It just requires someone with a great idea to come along and have the passion and commitment to see that idea through.

I think you'd be better off creating your own ebook or private fansite/forum that you could monetize rather than trying to have a generic fansite that can't really compete with the wiki. There's plenty of niche topics in RS that you could dedicate an entire book or website to, sort of like that one guy whose name I've forgotten (qeltar maybe?) did back in like 2008 and the XP waste dungeoneering group did later on

You're welcome to PM @Arceus or @Stev.

OT: Reddit, RS Wiki, and Jagex completely checking out of caring for fansites.

The nature of RS Wiki and reddit allow them to become fundamentally bigger communities with greater wealths of knowledge much faster than a forum and site with a team of less than ten. Even if our crew was in full force, we could not compete.

However, this is not necessarily a bad thing. RS Wiki is limited in its abilities to create unique tools, something we welcome suggestions for (e.g. DGSweeper, Ports calculator, x y z planner, calculator, simulator).

We have the capability to create anything we want via custom web design, whereas the wiki format is restrictive to articles and various scripts (suggestions welcome).

I also far value the forum discussions here - they are much more real and substantive than reddit comments 'lol' 'nice' 'cool' '10/10'.

The rise of the wiki really spelt the doom of fansites as an information source, coupled with the rise of the app which can surplant the fansite more in-depth tools in many cases.

Fansite forums are a great resource and ought to live on, but an actual fansite itself just does not have the capacity to out do a wiki in terms of breadth of info it provides and speed of content creation.

Couple that with Tip.it not exactly doing itself any favours in terms of getting/staying update and its a recipe for disaster.

And just to be clear by not doing itself any favours I mean the long standing issue whereby users who want to help and make the site feel better end up tired of trying to help because 9/10 suggestions/corrections get no acknowledgement and those that do a good 3/4 that are 'going to be added' never actually get done. It's an issue that has plagued the site for years now and really saw a down turn in the number of people bothering to submit corrections.

The notion that traditional sites could compete with either the Wiki or Reddit or Twitch is purely delusional, sorry to say. No amount of changes to any of the traditional sites could make them competitive, at best they could only hope to be Wiki/Reddit 2.0, and that isn't going to be able to beat the real deal. The times have changed.

Especially since fansite communities tend to be the result of a fair bit of investment. Like, most of the people here have been here for a while, we've got a website with a pretty well-defined culture and everyone knows everyone and so on. But to an outsider we're probably an aging, insular group that's latched on to a site with considerably worse info than the Wiki.

To be fair, most of us do not come here for the guides and stuff like that. Tip.it at one point was my go-to place for quests clues and even some PVM, and the Archive of Wisdom was pretty great at one point. These days, if I'm doing a quest right on release (which I usually do), I rely on WIki. If I'm doin the quest much later than release, then I'll typically use Tip.it and one or two other fansites (I always use multiple guides simultaneously). I also still use the Tip.it locator for clues, but I never do clues anymore, they just rot in my bank. And I don't really use the PVM guides for new high level bosses, since there's better ones out on Youtube much closer to update, and the rest is learned by experience. I come here mainly for the community.

Same, really. I meant back in Ye Olde Dayse, when Tip.It had really good guides for everything.
