What happened to these forums?

Maybe Tip.it can draw some new interest by forming a partnership with HomestarRunner? Strongbad could be the official forum mascot? :)

Back after a 5 year TIF hiatus. Please don't mind me too much.

Traditional forums are on the decline as whole, though there are still many robust forums out there, but I think with RS the problem is compounded by the fact that RS itself is also on the decline in terms of users and popularity. Most casual players can get by fine with just Reddit and RSwiki. So can experienced players, though they tend to stick for the community.

Agreed, rarely join forums these days, Reddit is just convenient.

It's a much smarter way of working, tip.it I've been using before the creation date of this account it actually went down for a couple months before it reopened.

Tip.it is a part of my RuneScape identity, but now people would rather watch Netflix, play on their smartphone it's not about strictly sitting down and just dedicating everything to RuneScape.

RuneScape is an afk-game and tool these days for people, I'm sure cookie-clicker games have as many players as RuneScape it's the same accumulation mechanics but social and much more content but it persists.

People will be saying in future what happened to Reddit, what happened to SmartTVs technology moves on.

Several years ago this community took a decent blow to its activity due to a rotation in staff/forum moderators.

Over-modding - and by this I mean super over-modding was a daily thing and you couldn't post in - nor create a thread without some kind of moderator intervening, be it moving it to the "correct" forum or locking it for being "irrelevant" etc etc.

Because of this, the threads and posts got seperated and to this day you still see a nonsensical over abundance of sub-forums on this website - giving the appearance of little activity. Most people used to click on the General Forums where you could talk about everything in GENERAL. Now you have to go to this place to talk about this or that place to talk about that.

Having been around tip.it for a long time I can honestly say that this is my personal opinion as to why tip.it started losing members to other places. (Could definitely factor in other reasons but I see this one as a catalyst).

TL;DR. Too many subforums created + over modding at a certain time period some years ago broke the activity curve.

The natural decline in activity anno 2016 is of course - well - a natural decline. :)

PS I just made a RS chronicles account .Seeing as my RS name is blocked (because its naughty naughty) U can add "SIR CAPS LOCK" and hit me up. See ya!

I think most of the sub-forums made sense once upon a time, but now with declining activity it certainly couldn't hurt to smush some of them back together.

Off the top of my head I'd say:

TMHT could go.

Questionnaries could merge back into gen discussion.

Market place could probably be done away with because it's dead

Archive of Wisdom and General Guides could merge

Data and Research could go.

RS Media could merge into gen disscussion.

OS guides & tips could move over to the main gen guides area.

Gen disussion could be renamed/relabelled to make it clearly for RS3, Chronicle and Idle Adventures

Community Created Tools is a dud, stick em in gen guides.

Clans section is kinda a dud, merge it all into one and be done with it.

Swiftkit forum is a bit eh - kinda dead but it has a use.

DG sweeper is like super dead, especially since the tool pretty much doesn't work properly anymore and hasn't been fixed/updated in years at this stage.

The whole "community feedback" section could be merged into 1 forum with how quiet it is really - maybe just have sub-forums for "done" "rejected" and "in progress" to move suggestions/corrections into.

Off-Topic is relatively okay, sport & fitness is a bit dead, the tech sub-forums are a bit redundant as is the art subforum.

I'd say if you did those changes it'd make things look and feel a bit tidier and less dead and given a few months to see how things go you could probably condense even further.

Or, quite honestly: Runescape and Not Runescape.

And yes yes yes, a thousand times yes to over moderation. Way too many people with too much power, too many differing opinions, and no recourse to a Mod's decision once made.

What are you talking about? I still get an email on my AOL account every time the Tip.it MySpace has an update.

Your Tip.ItSpace account still works? Dag. I lost the password to mine years ago.

I too am disheartened that there aren't posts on the forum.

But then again, I'm also incredibly guilty of not posting on the forum very much..

It's something everyone's guilty of at some point or other.

Also, some of the busiest posters were also some of those who got in the most trouble (I'm looking at you @Arceus, you bad apple ). Not all mind you, but some. They pushed discussions forward and sometimes they would descend into arguments which would sometimes drunkenly stumble into rule-breaking territory. Goodness knows I dealt with enough of them before I left. Mrs Chips said earlier that the staff and mods here were corrupt and working against the community, and except for obfuscator taking bribes ( :P) I know that we weren't and most of you know that we weren't (Kim dealt with that wonderfully already so I really don't want to get into it again, but bear with me here).

If I had a dollar for every forum warning I've gotten here.

You wouldn't have much ^.^

Anyway, this is some very interesting feedback that I have read here so far!

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be?~ Marianne Williamson

It is basically the informational era 2.0, where there is too much info almost everywhere (mainly Wikia >.>).

I can't speak for others, but I'm caught in a cycle here.

I'd like to be more active here (since I prefer using forums over sites like Reddit), but since this place is very inactive these days, it feels like there'd be no real point to post due to the inactivity, but me not posting doesn't help the view that this board is getting less and less active.

Maybe we should subsidise the forum with questions we already know the answers to?

This. Also, since the Tip.it help-site (as a distinct thing from the Forums) are basically dead and outmoded by the Wiki/Twitch/Reddit, there's really no real for new people to join the forums, and without new blood, it's sort of a slow death, particularly as older members move away from the forums.

Which is a shame, because there's a lot of people that would be better to suited to traditional forums as opposed to Reddits, or better suited to using both (as I do), but they aren't aware of it. I constantly see people posting blogs/trivial accomplishments of Reddit, only to get - understandably - hate for spamming Reddit, when they could just as easily post that elsewhere.

Come to think of it I'm noticing a huge lack of posts as well. It is sad how inactive this community has become.

I don't use reddit myself, and probably never will.

But yeah, the last post in the rants forum and suggestions forum is from over 3 months ago. That is awful, these used to be very active, in fact they were very active before I left in late 2015.
