Recommend me an internet browser?

31 December 2014 - 06:11 PM

That's not Chrome because I have issues with it. I'm currently using Firefox with a number (less than 20) of really helpful extensions so it tends to quickly eat up my RAM and then I end up killing it in Task Manager and restarting it to restore my current session - I have a laptop that I often have to shut down before I'm done with something on the internet so I just do that so Firefox remembers my tabs, which is probably a really stupid plan.

Mostly I just need it to play nicely on Windows and with Norton, have some sort of AdBlockPlus type feature, and be able to remember passwords and sessions easily (ie the next time I open it open those tabs again. Probably Firefox can do this so please tell me how?) If it works with most/all or solves the problem that I have the plug in for that would be great.

Budget Speaker Recommendations/Bass Guitar Portable Amp-thing

28 July 2014 - 08:09 PM

Actually kind of a two-fer.

1. Looking for decent speaker system (preferably with a sub) that will last me 3-5 years using pretty much just for casual music/gaming on my laptop. The stock speakers are garbage and I can't always use headphones. I just have on board sound with RealTek and/or AMD (idk, sound cards aren't my thing). Looking to spend <$50 USD, thinking about either these or these on Newegg.

Thing number 2: I play bass for fun and occasionally in my college pep band. I'd like a decent portable thing that I can be heard with that is battery powered and not too heavy. I'm willing to do a little electrical work to make that work but am nowhere near a hobby electrician or anything like that. I've got the stuff to build a Ruby pre-amp with a more bass-y feel but no speakers or anything to hook that to. So any ideas or thoughts about this? The general use of this amp is for practice with headphones as it runs on a 9V but it can drive a cab too... I know they make the HoneyTone amp for guitars but also that it is really bad with bass levels. So I guess a super bassy speaker (on the smaller side, and battery power-able) if anyone has suggestions or things I can hack together?

RAM and Virtualization questions

07 September 2013 - 04:26 PM

1. I have 2 DDR3 RAM slots in this laptop. It currently has two 2GB sticks (OEM). If I wanted to upgrade [preferably to 8GB] for reasonably cheaply, what's a good brand to go with? Reasonably cheaply being <$100 USD if possible, I'm not really sure of the going price on RAM at the moment.

2. Running Speccy gives me information about Virtualization in the CPU page:

Virtualization    Supported, Disabled

I have an AMD A6-3420M cpu and was wondering if there is any benefit to enabling that and what it does exactly. I read the Wikipedia page but it was not particularly useful to me.

MBTI Thread

17 July 2013 - 03:17 AM

Since we haven't had one of these in about two years by the looks of it, here's the not annual MBTI thread! If you haven't taken it recently, here's a couple of ones that are good and succinct: DiscordiaMBTI/HumanmetricsMBTI/MyPersonalityMBTI (need to sign up)

If you want to know more about your type Google it or something, Wikipedia has a pretty good collection of descriptions and it ties them into the Kearly [or whatever] big five types.

Anyway, I've taken it like four times in the past day or so and pretty regularly get ISTJ (Inspector) or INTJ (Mastermind). I consider myself more of an INTJ because that was what I got the first time I took it a while ago.

I will also add a lovely poll so we can see what personalities make up OT.

VB Graphics Card issue

05 April 2013 - 07:43 PM

Yeah. I'm running WinXP SP2 on the guest, gave it 1GB RAM and 200-something MB video RAM. Host is running Win7 with 4GBRAM and 512MB graphics. I have the addon thing from Oracle installed.

Any suggestions? I tried downloading the graphics driver for the card in this laptop (AMD Radeon HD 6520G) and installing them in XP but it didn't work, and the XP doesnt like those drivers, I keep getting the found new hardware PCI card and ít doesn't find the driver. I have no idea how to go about connecting the VM to the Internet, which might work but idk.

Help please?
