Intoxication and Consent - morality, legality, and other shenanigans

16 May 2013 - 02:10 PM

I figure this is as good a place as any. How does everyone feel about intoxication and consent?

Mod Edit: This was split off from the relationship thread. Since this is such a controversial issue, please use care while posting. Thanks ~ Kimberly

Sex work, sex trafficking, and the law

05 February 2013 - 03:50 AM

It's been a long time since there has been debate around these parts, so here's something worth posting about. Should people be allowed to buy and sell sexual services? Is it wrong to "sell your body"? Is prostitution "paid rape"? If so, what can the government do about it? How does this relate to the porn industry? Are pornstars the same as, or on the same moral level as prostitutes?

To spark some discussion, here is an article from reason.com making the case for legalization.

Economics: more or less government intervention?

09 November 2012 - 02:15 AM

In the 2012 election thread,(http://forum.tip.it/...ama-re-elected/) Donnie made the claim that government intervention was never desirable. I got into a discussion with him, and then we were shooed away. This new thread is meant to resume this discussion. Feel free to port the discussion about private vs. public health care here as well.

Does revenge lead to regret?

01 August 2012 - 12:56 AM

http://forum.tip.it/...80#entry5289284

Following a discussion on whether it is a good idea to give into our desire for vengeance, I call upon you, OT. Tell us the following: if you've ever avenged yourself (or someone else, please specify) for a perceived slight...

In response to what did you do it?
How?
When?
Do/did you regret it?
When did the guilt kick in?
In any case, on a scale of one to ten, ten being very hurtful and one being not hurtful at all, how would you rate the injury and the revenge?
Did the person with whom you evened things out reciprocate?

Also, have you ever been on the receiving end? Did this make you want to reciprocate? Did you?

I'll be keeping track of this and I'll post results when I feel like I've got enough data. Post away!

Desktop won't turn on

08 July 2012 - 03:30 AM

Tried to use my computer this morning. It was still on, hadn't turned it off. Monitor showed no input screen, which is normal. Shaking the mouse and typing didn't wake it up though. Keyboard and pen tablet showed no light, so no input presumably. No beeps. Turned it off by pressing the power switch for a couple of seconds. Turned it back on. No use. Did some research, mostly came up with PSU/mobo issues. Suggestions were to turn off the tower from behind, let it sit for a couple of minutes, and to try again. There was a red horizontal slide thing at the back of the PSU which I toggled a couple of times. No switch at the back of my tower so I unplugged the power cable. Now it just doesn't turn on at all. There's a green LED at the back of my PSU. It's lit.
What do I do?
The computer in question is 6 years old. I'm not too worried about the files; most of the important ones I can find again (my music library is on last.fm, it'll take work but that's not too bad) or are on Dropbox, assuming I can't slave the drive as I've seen suggested. I do have some software I was planning to use in the near future on there; I'll probably be replacing it soon, so really costly repairs are probably not really worth it. While I'm on this topic, do laptops have the same shelf life as desktop computers? Thanks in advance for your help.
