Tip.it gets hacked and doesn't send email users?

10 April 2012 - 04:23 PM

edit: title: "send an email to users"

I haven't played runescape (or accessed these forums) in months upon months. I use a wide range of passwords on all of my online accounts and the only two that matched were my tip.it password and facebook password. Last night, after a day spent visiting a college, I was alerted that someone from the UK tried to access my facebook account. Minutes later, I was being harassed by a teenager from the UK on twitter, who told me to check my direct messages. Our exchange went on for hours and he told me his friend had put a RAT (remote access trojan) on my computer and that if I did not comply with his requests he would steal my parents banking information and completely take control of my computer. This struck me as odd since I haven't even downloaded a file in months, use noscript for browsing, and don't even torrent. But sure enough, he knew my facebook password, email address, IP address, and some contact information. I was legitimately intimidated (not knowing my tip.it pass was the same or that tip.it was hacked) so I shut off my computer, removed the ethernet cable, and changed all of my passwords from a different computer. His only request was that I send him my runescape password. I began to question him intensely and his story slowly began to fall apart and I realized this password was the only one he knew, although I had entered several over the past few days. He threatened to DDoS me but after a while it became apparent that his power was limited. I finally got him to send me evidence that made me breath a sigh of relief- he typed "noble_aloof ########@comcast.net" which made me then realize (because of the underscore and old email address) that tip.it was clearly breached at one time, and that is a very old email address only used by my myspace, facebook, and tipit accounts. These kids had access to what seemed like a username and password list from tip.it, or that one is publicly available somewhere.

My problem is that its widely known that most people don't use a wide range of passwords online, and had I been more stupid (used one general password) and had these "hackers" used more common sense, they could have easily compromised more of my accounts if my passwords matched. Quite frankly if they didn't contact me on twitter I'd be pretty scared right now. I'm enraged that Tip.it could allow something like this to happen and not send emails or frequent urgent warnings to users telling them to change their passwords after a breach has been detected. I'm guessing this event happened months ago but the administrators of this site should be ashamed for not being more proactive about this issue, however long ago it may have occurred. I'm sure there was some type of alert on the forums but that does not help protect inactive users.

Brand new computer..

11 May 2011 - 10:00 PM

I finally got a new computer it has 16gb ram and the new i7 sandybridge with an ASUS board. its an antec df-85 case or something similar. it was professionally put together This cost me a lot of money and i've begun to have problems with usb ports.. Only one front port worked from the start, it recognized my card reader but then stopped recognizing it. after i tested my card reader with my moms computer i thought perhaps the three year old reader was broken. then i began using a brand new 2gb memory stick for readboost and it worked fine for more than a day (Again in this one port). then due to a project from school i bought a new card reader, removed the stick, and the new card reader worked. now the brand new usb stick won't work at all in any port front or back. also upon startup it says no harddrive detected. help please

Trouble recovering password

29 March 2011 - 04:19 PM

Hi the reason i'm posting this in general is because i posted a thread at least 6 months ago regarding how one of my neighborhood friends recovered one of his accounts that had been hacked and it turned out that the hacker had been playing on it for about 3 years without changing the recoveries or name. Basically this account was incredible and my friend after taking a 6ish month hiatus tried to recover the account (lets call it john111) but it says that it is not a valid username yet it appears in the highscores? could someone explain this or offer some troubleshooting options? I am posting on his behalf so i will not disclose the actual account name.

Why I love runescape

07 March 2011 - 10:10 PM

Hi I'm noble aloof. The only reason I've continued playing runescape over the years was because of the adrenaline I used to experience with staking. Today after finally getting enhanced excalibur, and after three years (of slacking) of shaping my account, I have not lost a single stake and have made over 2mil. My biggest stake was arma helm for a d bow (cleaned the guy for about 900k total). I'm not raking in hundreds of millions, but I'm having consistent fun in runescape for the first time in recent memory

Basically I item hide and win. I often double, triple, and quad stake. Winning brings me much happiness. I just had to share a picture from a 100k stake.

Just EE specced and shot some d bolts. He did not hit me once. Have a good day

Depending on critic response this thread might turn into a hall of fame where I post ridiculously lucky, ridiculously good, or strange stakes. i'm not interested in posting a chain of 100k pics.

Stupid guilt story to get off my chest

02 March 2011 - 04:02 AM

Okay so i got my license last friday.. I drive my mom's car its a pretty nice 07 with low mileage and a v6 so as a teenage kid i'm very content with it. She doesn't let me drive to school due to the fact that she uses the car in the day and as of right now i can only drive until about 7 at night. she told me i couldn't have any friends in the car without her permission

Friday i didn't drive at all. Saturday i drove down to the local running store and bought a pair of shoes, then instead of going home i picked up two old neighborhood friends (which i wasn't supposed to do) and went for a 20 minute joyride, then returned home promptly.

fast forward to today my friend ended up at my house after an early dismissal, and since i was the first one he picked up with his license, i tried to honor him as best i could and took him home. we blasted music, went a little fast, just did stupid kid things, then we get to the bottom of this at least mile long hill right before his development.

he looks at me, i look at him, half the neighborhood is still at work. the kids are still in school, and the car has fresh tires on it. We knew what i had to do.

before I put the car in neutral and revved to an unheathly amount of RPMs, i asked him "Are you sure theres no way i'll get in trouble?" "yeah" he said.

So i burned out, ran a stop sign then realize a gigantic supply truck barreling towards me so i slowed down to about 5mph and got out of the way. the majority of the hill was still ahead of us, infact it barely started sloping upwards yet. After the truck passed i just floored it up the hill, i saw the speedometer hit 75 and though i had time to hit 85 (goes to a long dead end) i decided enough was enough and that there was no point in going that fast. so i slow down, put my blinker on to turn, and creep up the hill when suddenly my friend starts yelling "GO!! GO!!! KEEP GOING!". I ignore him and keep taking it slow, im beginning to turn and i see in my rearview a white car modeled like a police cruiser gunning it up the hill. "my neighbors an ex-cop!! my neighbors an ex-cop! quick get to my house". I still barely make the connection and i park in front of his house and tell him goodbye. then by the expression on his face i realized that we were being pursued. I pulled into his driveway and he starts running into his house. i get out and take two clumsy steps before the guy parks and beeps his horn fanatically. gets out, in a full suit and tie, and shows me his badge. doesn't ask my name or anything, just says that three cops live in this development and if they ever see this red car speeding or driving recklessly again, they will gladly give me a ticket. this whole time you can smell the rubber burning from the tires and brakes. What makes this story even more unfortunate is that he doesn't even know his neighbors, at all.

So we go into his house, im shocked, he is shaking. his grandma is at the kitchen table knitting. we get upstairs, "what if my grandma heard it.. holy ****". i can't take just sitting there and drive carefully home.

10 minutes ago he calls me, the conversation went like this "guess what, my grandma heard the entire conversation.. she told my mom.. i can never drive with you again"

tl;dr don't drive fast, 2 kids in my grade have died from automobile accidents in the past 2 years. new drivers beware the allure of speed.
