Life is pretty awesome, I'm thinking about all the good stuff that's happened in the last year or two... It's a lot. A lot of firsts, a lot of spontaneous things, a lot of things I'd never have imagined I'd be able to do. I've got to remember this moment, this kind of thinking, so even when things get tough I remember how far I've come.

Some of the things are seemingly so small, some of them are embarrassing (hence redacted), but they're all totally new things that have led to me being where I am today.

My game's demo is done.

Wow. Over 400 days and thousands of hours of effort resulting in a complete, self-contained game inside a (hopefully-to-be) much larger thing.

The journey's not over but I'm going to take this as a big victory.

Yeah I'm only making like $600/month I can do without that income I'm seriously considering giving my two weeks in June (1 year mark).

I don't need the money. It's just nice to have. I'll just get a job on the weekends or whatever as a waiter/bartender idc.

I'm working on getting an offer from a few places I've interviewed at. If I can get an offer for 55-60k in a better area I'll use that to demand $30k/year part time (i.e., half of full time salary) or I'm gone. But I don't think understand how big of a mistake of not fighting tooth and nail to keep me would be. I'm literally their best programmer by such a margin it's [bleep]ing insane.

I've fixed problems you can only fix with a knowledge of linear algebra. I'm currently the only one with the maths background to work on the more demanding graphics features of our product, and without me, they're in pretty poor shape. My background with graphics programming in general is critical to the future features they want to implement. They really don't know...

Finally, my room no longer looks like a kid's room. I moved up to a full size bed, got or repurposed furniture to match, printed and framed some of my artwork, and cleaned up some crap.

This genuinely makes me pretty happy.

@Vieva pls make sure the puzzles stay colorblind accessible. As someone whos colorblind I run into a shockingly high amount of games who do color challenges

In the advanced settings there's going to be a way to specify color blindness when it comes to that. I'll have you covered.

I want my game to be very accessible. Feedback on how to improve for disabilities is always welcome. (This is aimed at anyone who plays not you in particular.)

re: puzzles, yes, there's not going to be anything like that. Extra gimmicks would be monsters that walk around and block the light, timed lights, etc. But the general idea is the same: direct light into a receiver.

Mirror puzzles.

tudNelb.png

I don't know how many people here did the quest Mourning's End Part 2 in RuneScape but mirror puzzles are going to be a big thing in my game. They power the Old One Prisium's terrible machines.

The initial puzzles will just involve getting a specific beam to a specific receiver, the more advanced puzzles will involve refracting light, creating multiple beams, etc. OooOoooOooh.

I was trying to draw the Bent-Neck Lady from Haunting of Hill House but ended up with this bird guy instead.

w1rKMLa.png

Redecorating my room with black/white/red (stur wurs empire colors lol) so I'm trying to make a custom poster.

This is one of my other ideas:

psIGBzn.png

That one's based off a WWII anti-Nazi propaganda piece dropped over France ("Hitler leads youths to death" or something) but I replaced Hitler with the Monopoly Man. /r/im14andthisisdeep

The other two posters are a Stranger Things one my bro got me and a "Tournee du Chat Noir" poster I saw in Ft Lauderdale at the art museum.

@ Nyosuht

That's awesome! I want a motorcycle endorsement and a Honda or Indian uggggggggh

Awesome way to start the day:

Video tutorial. Will pop up after the initial banter. Can quickly dismiss it, view the videos, and/or read the text.

Good luck, Tess! Of my family, only my brother knows I'm non-binary. The rest will take it poorly at best. Hope it works out better for you!

...

Yesterday my game turned 1 year old. Wow.

Leaving for Florida in a couple hours! So excited to see Muse on Sunday. They're my favorite band. :D

I love how this looks:

(How is that for lighting and color, Hedgehog? :D)

The pirates look pretty good too (they're not visible in the screenshot):

I'm changing up the tutorial. You'll start on a ship heading to Isabelle Island boarded by pirates. You'll have to fight the pirates (you can't die, the pirates will hit zeros). Upon defeating the pirates, Cthulhu will rise out of the water in the distance. It'll summon squids and tentacles to sink the ships. You wake up on Isabelle Island in the guest room and it's fundamentally similar from there on.

I hope the "cinematic experience" will help get players interested. I'll also have hints that explain combat as you fight since that's a major problem. That and the improved gatekeeping during the tutorial should help out a lot.

Thanks, analytics!

My landlady is going to replace the carpet with laminated hardwood. Yeeeeeeeah.

...

I talked to my boss today about the possibility of telecommuting. He seemed cautiously receptive. Our last lead developer telecommuted and kind of spoiled it (she didn't work there for that long)  so I'm going to have to be above and beyond this year leading up to November/December. I told him I'd definitely be in on Monday mornings for our meetings and Fridays.

Since I'll be graduating in the fall I'm going to plan on having a job offer in hand so he matches. I'm willing to take less pay for flexibility while I'm in school but Raleigh and surrounding area is a lot pricier than NC (it'd easily be 2.5-3x my rent now within 20 minutes of downtown). I could probably go as low as $50K assuming my bro and I stick together (that'd be $80K/year which is plenty, and our tax burden would be lower since it's two incomes). He'd be able to commute though.

My plan for the year is to be on my way out of Fayetteville and on to Raleigh. Ideally I'd be in Raleigh by January, working 40-hours salaried at my job, and attending NC State. Within the next three to four years, ideally I'll be working at one of my "Big 3" (Epic, SAS, or Red Hat).

That problem is wage growth vs inflation. Our parents (and their parents, to a degree) had higher wages relative to cost of living than we do for the most part.

Also houses were a lot smaller and more basic. Although my mom lived in a house where my grandparents paid like $60/month mortgage, the house is smaller than the one I live in now (it was under 1,000 square feet; my home is about 900 sq/feet) and didn't have central heating/cooling, etc. They don't build houses like that anymore ("starter houses" is what they were called?), plus with real estate being seen as an investment, prices are higher. This is a different problem than wage growth.

<socialist>

The bourgeoisie are stealing pocketing the increases in our increased productivity because they're getting greedier and greedier. This is unsustainable! To the gulags!

Got the hotel + train tickets + concert tickets to see Muse in Sunrise, Florida two weeks from now. Very excited! Muse is one of my favorite bands. Unfortunately I'll be gone Saturday night (train leaves at 1:30 AM) through Tuesday (train returns at noon) but so be it...

Wish they toured a bit closer (they do have a stop in Atlanta, GA which would've been about half as much Sunrise, FL is near where I grew up so FL wins).
