#5575050 Today...

Posted by Jonanananas on 17 September 2015 - 10:55 AM

I'm happy to live in a country with strict gun control laws, though I see the problem in getting rid of the guns already in circulation. Dedicated criminals or perpetrators of a shooting that has long been planned will still be able to get guns, no doubt. But I think reducing the widespread availability will reduce the number of deaths. Be it deaths by accident, like a kid finding a loaded gun or arguments between spouses, friends whatever that are escalating, be it suicides or the teenager going on a school shooting with his parent's weapons. Guns aren't responsible for these deaths, but they make it easier.

#5549270 What story goes with this picture?

Posted by Jonanananas on 18 March 2015 - 01:44 PM

A single selfie doesn't really say much...

I'll say she's a muslim, who used to be like a normal woman her age (this is a photo from that time) but for some reason she started to radicalize, wearing a hijab and later a burqa and eventually emigrated to syria to join the IS. Probably dead wrong, but she somehow reminded me of a simlar story I've heard recently. And I don't really have any clue otherwise :P

#5539445 Charlie Hebdo

So, as long as it's not near a majority that's still alright? I'm quite shocked to see that those numbers are that high. Especially because the question specifically says civilian targets and the purpose is supposed to be to defend Islam (not resistance against a supposed oppressor like in Gaza). The muslim world is in dire need of reformation imho. This is not a problem of Muslims in general, but it IS a problem of Islam.

#5514875 What movie(s) did you last see?

Posted by Jonanananas on 25 August 2014 - 10:10 AM

Lucy.

I was skeptical, but tried to keep an open mind, despite the premise of the film (Humans use only 10% of their brain. Lucy gets an overdose of a new drug that increases that percentage steadily, resulting in her being able to use telekinesis, control other life forms etc.). Up to maybe 40% it was a somewhat decent action movie. It wasn't concerned about any real science whatsoever, but it was okay. But beyond that, it completely ditched having anything remotely related to rules. There were some pretty pictures, but the plot went completely out the window

Spoiler for the end

#5509161 Israel - Palestine conflict thread

Posted by Jonanananas on 27 July 2014 - 07:28 PM

This calls for Israel going back to 1967 borders and giving away East Jerusalem. Hell no.

EDIT: this is in response to Rocco

And why is that a hell no? The 1967 borders are the ones who are at least somewhat internationally agreed upon. If a peace plan that ultimately results in that works, I'd think that would be a good idea, no?

Into the Wild. Absolutely stunning movie based on the true story of Christopher McCandless, who decides after College to go "into the wild": He destroys his passport, social security card etc., spends all his savings and starts tramping and travelling on his own - down to Mexico and later to Alaska to live alone in the wilderness. Great landscape shots and a story that really gets under your skin. Definitely recommend watching this!

Luis Mother[bleep]ing Suarez.

I seriously hope he gets banned for several games. Shit like this absolutely shouldn't be tolerated.

Well [bleep], I had exams so couldn't watch episode 9 when it first came out

Makes me want to read the books so I don't get shocked like that again.

It wasn't any better reading the book...I'd take a bet on at least 25% of readers literally throwing their books across the room.

If we're going for pics and such regarding this episode, this one's pretty cool:

#5408381 What book are you currently reading?

Posted by Jonanananas on 25 May 2013 - 01:37 PM

I stopped liking e-readers when I noticed how many of them require you buy the books through them, rather than reading any file in the proper format you happen to have. I have zero interest in downloading books I do not own. However, my personal collection of about 20 years of age is several hundred novels strong, and I am not inclined to buy books twice. Well, there are a few I would certainly be willing to throw some extra money at the author for sure, but I am not inclined to pay for the privilege to read my books on an inferior, if more portable, platform (I prefer to read paper. I'd like to be able to take a few books with me when I travel, without the part where my carry on weighs 10 lbs. There are also nights I might prefer to not risk dropping a large novel on my face when I fall asleep at 4am because I can't put it down).

There is also the point that I loathe the idea that say, Amazon, could delete my book library on a whim like they did to this guy (and as much as I use it now, I am wary of the same thing with steam).

Of course the solution is quite simple. PDF is a free format, readable with a free program, and on a playbook it can serve as an e-reader, so yeah. Problem solved.

I'm not quite sure what you mean tbh. Afaik, Amazon's Kindle is the only reader that's really restricted (well Apple stuff too, but who would want to read books on a LCD Screen...). You can still read books from other sources, you just may need to convert it first (Amazon offers a conversion service itself, not sure if for all formats, but if not, there's great e-reader software like Calibre).

There are definitely things that bother me about the Kindle (I got one as a present when there were still few alternatives, else I'd not buy an Amazon one), but practically they don't really matter. Amazon being able to delete your books is one thing, but of course the chances of that happening are small and well - my books are saved on my computer via calibre too, so what. The bigger problem here is imo what allows Amazon to do that in the first place - the fact that you don't actually own the digital book, like you would own a physical one, you merely buy a license. Of course no one tells you that...

The other problem I guess is DRM (Though there are some publishers without DRM, mainly TOR) even preventing me from legal sharing with family and close friends. Personally, I just remove it, even though it's technically illegal. Again our laws considering digital files and copyright are unfortunately terribly out of date, and with publishers, the music industry etc. keeping on lobbying for it, it seems like that is unlikely to change :/

Still, I have found the Kindle to be very useful, you can always have a bunch of books with you, can read anywhere, and it's a nice source of cheap and good books too. I wouldn't want to give up paper books completely...but neither would I like to give up my Kindle at this point.

Only a month to go, and the first trailer is out too! Who's pumped for season 3?

#5341874 School shooting in CT on 14-12-2012

We aren't at war with pakistan though and I specified paki children. And yes I'm familiar with Dunbar's number which is why I specified not knowing the victims personally.

My critique of peoples reactions is just like I said in my first post on this topic, people care more about people in their own country more then others and this is a negative affect that statism (read: nationalism) has on us.

That's just not how the human mind works though. Yeah, in theory we should mourn for everyone we don't know in the same way, but the facts just are it's going to hit closer to home if it's in your country, if it's in a place you know, if it's a one-time event as opposed to something going on for a longer time (As civilian casualties in wars do). That's just the way it is and saying someone should "check their values" if they're more upset about this than about a Pakistani dying is ridiculous.

It's horrible that something like this had to happen again so soon :(

edit: And agreed with Vezon. Gun control should be discussed - but not in the direct connection to an actual incident. Such a tragedy should not be used for a political goal.

#5341659 World 1, 16 both P2P along with 10 others

Posted by Jonanananas on 14 December 2012 - 02:34 PM

They never mentioned before making world 1 p2p...they said they were taking 5 low populated worlds that were f2p and converting them, I'd hardly call W1 lowly populated ...
Also naming 71 as a peng hunt world is odd move, sure there are the penguin whispers or w/e they're called that hunt there but you risk splintering the peng hunt community more making 2 worlds themed instead of 60 or 71.

How exactly does it splinter the hunt? W60 is mainly for those who like chat-based hunting, W71 for thread-based hunting. Both are valid methods and I think both deserve recognition. The current communities will stick to their current worlds as they have in the past, and new hunters will see both possibilities and have the option to decide between them.

The peng hunt community is by far big enough for two worlds (there are actually some more being used) and due to the mechanics of how the different groups operate, trying to combine them in one world wouldn't even function properly.
