Phone numbers spoofed to steal RS pins

18 April 2012 - 11:55 PM

The hackers just get more and more creative...
How can a phone company actually get spoofed by fake caller id's...lol

Police have become involved in an investigation into how dozens of Telstra customers with numbers starting with 4963 were wrongly billed for calls to an internet gaming site.
Telstra’s billing and security divisions have been investigating how several hundred calls to 1900 910 080 were made during a two-week period last month.

The calls, billed at a rate of $13.97, were made to buy tokens to play the online game Runescape.

‘‘Our investigation is continuing and we have now briefed police,’’ Telstra’s Hunter Region manager Chris Cusack said yesterday.

‘‘We are also in the process of contacting all affected customers.’’

Telstra is also working with the company that provides online PIN numbers to play Runescape, Surfpin, and the site’s manager, Cloudtel.

The telco has refused to release details of its investigation into the incident.

It is still not known if the fake calls, which have generally occurred late at night, originated within Australia.

A telecommunications engineer previously told the Newcastle Herald it was likely the calls were made using Caller ID spoofing technology, which uses an internet-based server to make telephone calls with false numbers.

Caller ID spoofing is the world’s fastest-growing form of telecommunications fraud on landlines and mobile services.

An Australian Communications Consumer Action Network spokeswoman urged customers who suspected they had been wrongly billed for calls to contact their telco.

Stellar Dawn development put on hold

06 March 2012 - 07:41 AM

Reported on numerous sources

Word to the wise: Don't put "dawn" into any part of your MMO's name, or else it will get hit by the curse of breaking dawn. Just ask Dawntide, DAWN, and now, Stellar Dawn.

Yes, unfortunately it's true. Jagex announced that it's suspending development on Stellar Dawn to make sure the company is in the best position possible by concentrating on Transformers Universe and RuneScape. While the studio was able to shuffle most of Stellar Dawn's team around to new positions, the decision still resulted in the loss of 12 jobs.

In a prepared statement, CEO Mark Gerhard was highly complimentary of Stellar Dawn's team and progress. "Jagex has always been committed to developing the highest quality games and services. This is not a decision we have taken lightly; the Stellar Dawn team has achieved a great deal developing the game and should rightly be proud of their achievements so far."

Stellar Dawn fans might find hope in the language being used by the team in the forum announcement, as the title's development is described as being "paused" and a "temporary move" instead of being outright cancelled.

Andrew Gower...

07 November 2011 - 03:45 AM

...is no longer even listed in the 'full credit list' of RS.

At least a few months ago they put him there as "chief architect."
Paul and Ian are still there as 'content developers.'

So it has come to this. The creator of RuneScape doesn't even get a mention in the credits list anymore. According to Jagex, Andrew contributed absolutely nothing to the game he made.

Andrew leaving Jagex is sure to be old news for most of you now - but getting deleted off the credits list is something else. Add all this to Andrew's (sudden?) departure from Jagex a year ago, I really wonder. WTF happened between the man who created and owned RS and (investors overlords at) Jagex? Did Andrew really gave up willingly for the money? On good terms? And getting deleted off the credits list??

And his new company, Fen Research, still appear to be a pretty blank page - they're hiring programmers, but that seem to be all there is for now.

(I feel like a tabloid reporter about now..)
