At first, I was a bit upset with the wilderness & free trade changes. I hated the idea that runescape would be going back to the old days of level-3-bald-green-shirt-guy bots, item scammers, and gloating pkers (after knowingly killing someone on a treasure trail!). But I think I was wrong in being so angry.

Especially after today's update, which gave us the long-awaited ability to remove the language filter. A couple months back I started moving away from runescape. Maybe it was just boredom, maybe it was finals coming up and studying taking up most of my time, or maybe I was growing out of this game that I've loved for all these years.

I found myself playing other games. Games with better combat systems. Games with more intuitive controls (and customizable hotkeys, damn it!). Games with unrestricted language, trading, and just more control overall given to your unique playing experience. There are, admittedly, a lot of things that runescape lacks. And it'll take time for us to get those things, if we ever do. But I can see that right now, Jagex is working towards the most important aspect of any RPG - Freedom. That's why we play this game, instead of one with specific levels, or zones, or any other way of separating one part of the game from the next. MMORPGs are often known for their free-roaming, take-it-at-your-own-pace kind of gameplay.

And after all this time, the game we know and love had become more restrictive. Because it's easy to see something wrong and just add a new rule to get rid of it. But it isn't easy to find a solution that retains your freedom, while fixing the problem too. Jagex isn't quite there yet, but they're trying. They've made some massive improvements already, and a lot of smaller steps in the right direction.
I just hope that it doesn't stop here.

(And hey, maybe next update they'll give us WASD controls.
Or not...but a girl can dream, right?)

I'm more than a little bit upset about the way jagex is doing the 'free trade & old wildy vote' situation.

No, I'm not a hater for free trade and old-style pking. I'm perfectly happy with the way things are now, and I could really go either way with the whole situation. Personally, I'm fine with free trade as long as we keep the grand exchange, even if some changes need to be made to it- other MMO's have similar mechanisms that work just fine (such as WoW's auction house), so I can see the grand exchange continuing to work as well with a few modifications. Pking and the wilderness doesn't directly affect me much- I've never pked personally. And if it does come back, I'm sure there will be a boost to the economy, hell, it might even balance it out a little bit. Junk trading can go by the wayside, we won't have to put up with it anymore and I definitely like that.

But that's not what this post is about.

It seems to me (and maybe this is just a conspiracy theory, but what the hell) that Jagex already has full intentions to bring back the wildy & trade. The whole vote is just a formality.
First and foremost, does it not seem odd to anyone that there isn't a 'No' option? We simply have the choice to vote yes. There's no way to see how much actual competition there is against the 'yes' voters. The voting page itself is a bit confusing as well.
Secondly, why are we not required to actually log in to vote? You don't need a password. Actually, you don't even need an account. If you wanted, you could just go on the highscores, pick a random name and type theirs in to vote. The very idea of this is just begging for people to abuse the system. For all I know, someone may have already signed my name as a yes voter, even though I certainly haven't done so myself.
I'm also a bit upset about the wording used on the voting page- very strong language is being used to urge people to vote in favor. On the other hand, the paragraph about voting no is weak in comparison.
Arguments have been made that this isn't about the wilderness or free trade at all. It's very possible that this is just a bid for another guinness world record. I'm not sure if I believe this, but you can find a lot of convincing arguments posted around the various forums.

What this means to me, is that all of this is simply a ploy for attention. I generally approve of the things that Jagex does. I've stood by and argued on their side for some of their most controversial updates and changes. But I find this to be downright insulting.
So, go ahead and vote 'yes', or ignore the poll altogether. It really doesn't matter either way.

Before I start, let me introduce myself... Wait, no, that sounds stupid.
In this blog, I'm going to.. No, no, that's even worse.
I'd like to start by.. uh.. well... Crap.

This is a blog. I'm Norriie. And clearly I don't really know how to start my first entry. I'm a veteran runescape player with a big mouth, a lot of opinions, and I love to talk about them. So I'm going to just jump right in and start my first blog post with a review of today's (and yesterday's, I guess) updates.

BEHIND THE SCENES ~ November 2010
    1. Dungeoneering- Warped floors
Every time we get a dungeoneering update, I feel a twinge of guilt at the fact that I still haven't really started the damn skill. I don't like it much. If I wanted to go play a dungeon, I'd go renew my Warcraft subscription (which I'll probably be doing next month anyways.. Cataclysm, anyone?). But when an update like this comes out, it kind of makes me want to give dungeoneering a second chance. Because honestly, I don't think anyone could argue with the nearly-unlimited-prayer-point goodness of a bonecrusher+bone necklace combo. Of course, the warped floors don't interest me much yet, but that's mostly because I've barely made it out of the frozen floors. So it's going to be a while before I see the apparently beautiful graphics of the warped area. But for those of you who are hardcore dungeoneering elitists, I hate you hope you enjoy your new content.

    2. Herblore Habitat
I don't get it. Is it a minigame? Distraction? Something else? Whatever it is, it sounds like free (yet overly complicated) herblore exp. I think I'll have to wait til this one comes out to see what I really think of it, but it sounds promising so far. We've been in dire need for herblore exp that doesn't give you carpal tunnel or cost over 20 gp/exp since those elusive extreme potions came out. Which reminds me, I'd like to see an update where I can kill that irritating desert phoenix and yank out a few hundred of his feathers at once (Jagex's thought process: "This secondary ingredient is really annoying to gather. Let's keep it untradeable."). But I digress. I noticed a mention of clothing rewards related to this weird new herblore-hunter-farming game, so even if the update doesn't live up to expectations, I'll still play it anyways for the sake of my ever-growing wardrobe.

    3. Do No Evil
Runescape's monkeys are kind of a pain. Monkey Madness is widely regarded as one of the top runners-up of the Most Annoying Quest Ever Award, and I can't say I really enjoyed Awowogei's subquest of RFD, either. But, on the other hand, they are pretty adorable (See also: Really Cute Monkeys). But on the other other hand, they also kind of look like little freaky hairy people. So it looks like this update could really go either way.

    4. And some other odds and ends
The bank/equip screen update sounds magnificent. We've been waiting for an update like that for a long, long time. I'll hold the final verdict until I see the new interface, but I'll go ahead and give Jagex a digital high-five for this one.
I love that the potion decanter now takes noted potions, but I would have liked this a lot more yesterday when I was attempting to run back and forth decanting several hundred potions on a laggy computer.
I approve of the new homepage design. It'll take some getting used to, but it's nice. And I was just thinking yesterday that the whole "Runescape: Dungeons of Daemonheim" logo thing needed to go.

And that about wraps it up for today. I hope you all enjoyed my first blog post, if you made it this far. Comment if you want, and I'd be glad to respond.

As finals week is getting dangerously close, I find myself desperately searching for more ways to procrastinate (this blog post being one of them- I've got a speech to do in 2 hours. Oops.)
And what better way to waste time than to get back online and start playing runescape again?

After catching back up on the things I've missed in the last few months, I'm excited for a fresh new month of updates. And here's my thoughts on today's Behind The Scenes.

    Capes of Distinction
Well... they tried. I feel like many people are rather disappointed after seeing the spoiler pictures posted on twitter and facebook, and I kind of feel the same way. I think that putting the cape design up to a majority vote was probably a bad idea. Particularly since it was separated into so many parts- no one could have had any idea what each section would look like when combined with the others. Oh well. It probably could have been a lot worse. In any case, I look forward to wearing it around for a few hours. I do like the idea of the milestone capes. Perhaps this will encourage more people to do what I've done for years- keep their skill set decently rounded instead of rushing for one 'easy' 99 after another while ignoring skills that they don't really like. Skillers will probably be annoyed that they they can't wear any of the capes, but I don't think that's anything new.

    Dwarf Lava Flow Mine
I just have one thing to say.. Why? We already have the LRC for "mid-to-high-level" mining purposes. I suppose this is for people who are kinda-almost-able-to-use-LRC-but-not-quite. The exp boosting outfit sounds nice though. It would save you around 1 mil exp or so on your way to 99, so I can't really argue with that.

    Death Hats
"Death Hats" sounds more like the title of one of their april fool's prank updates. I can't say I'm really all that interested in this update since I don't do pvp, but I'm sure there are pking pures out there who feel like they don't do enough bragging and boasting already. This will be a glorious update for them.

    Upgrades Week / Graphical Improvements
The little updates are usually my favorites. Most of the small upgrades won't affect me much, though (I've never hammered coconuts before, as delightfully dirty as it sounds). But I'm always happy to see when Jagex takes player's suggestions and does something about it. I'm sure the new graphics update will look good too. I think they're doing a great job so far- last weekend, my boyfriend mistook me playing runescape for WoW, because the graphics were so nice.

    Fremennik Sagas
I think I'm most excited about this one. Kind of a like a quest, but repeatable, and has something to with dungeoneering? Sounds like a good combination to me. Hopefully it'll provide an alternative way to get exp for dung while still gaining tokens. I'm sure the f2p players will appreciate it as well. It's nice to see them getting more updates these days.
