basically what I"d like to know is when the Slayer Master asks you to kill shades can it be any shades or the lvl-140 "shade" in the minigame?

You will be able to kill any shade at all and credit for that task I believe. If I ever get those, I go down to Mor'ton and kill all the shades hanging out by the temple building place.
