The Reality Series (Short Stories)

Featured Replies

This is the same story, just told from a different perspective each time. It has nothing to do with Runescape. A new one will be posted every couple of days. These stories may contain mild language and violence. And no, these stories are not about reality television. If you thought that, this is not the forum for you. #-o

Tara hated hospitals. They smelt like old people and Windex, the waiting room chairs might just send you into the ER with a broken back, and the vending machine food tasted like it hadn't been replaced since the Nixon era. She tried to avoid them at all costs, but some things were unavoidable, like a dying grandmother or a broken wrist.

Tara flipped through a six month old Reader's Digest that had been scribbled on with green crayon. Lilly sat next to her, pretending to read a small pamphlet about the benefits of a colonoscopy. The PA system beeped on, and a shrill voice paged a "Dr. Ali" to the pediatric ward.

Lilly sighed, and pulled a small pack of Kleenex from her purse. Dabbing her eyes, she asked in a whisper "Did Mrs. Green mention how bad the crash was?"

Tara shook her head, and looked up at the clock on the wall. It was past midnight, but she didn't feel tired. Tara tried to turn her attention to her magazine, but was too distracted. It was around nine when she got the call from her boyfriend Alex's mother. She was crying on the phone, and told Tara to come down to the hospital immediately. Tara had brought along Lilly, who was one of Alex's best friends.

According to Mrs. Green, there had been an accident, and Alex was in the Intensive Care Unit. Tara had been reading a magazine article on "How to Plan the Perfect Senior Prom." The prom was in two weeks, but now, Tara wasn't sure if she'd be going if Alex's accident was as bad as she feared. Her body froze at the thought of her boyfriend, who was always so energetic and full of life, dying at the tender age of seventeen.

Mrs. Green came walking down the hallway, blowing her nose loudly, after what seemed to be an eternity. She gestured for the girls to follow her, and began sobbing uncontrollably. Lilly began to cry, and put her arm around Tara.

Room 315 was down the hall from the waiting room, in the ICU floor of the hospital. Tara caught glances of the patients in the other rooms, through the slightly ajar doors. From the look of the other patients, Tara knew that Alex wasn't going back to his spot as quarterback of the varsity football team anytime soon.

Mrs. Green stopped, and pushed open the door to her son's room. Three doctors were adjusting machines, and taking notes on a small clipboard. Tara stopped in her tracks, and began crying along with Lilly. Propped up by pillows in the middle of the hospital bed, was Alex. His dark hair was matted with blood, and a large cut mared his face. Bruises were beginning to form on his pale skin, and his hazel eyes were closed. Alex's arm was wrapped in a sling, held steady by more pillows. The white and green polka dotted hospital gown stood out against his unusually grey skin. Tara walked over to the bed, and stroked her boyfriends hair gently.

Mrs. Green spoke between her tears.

"You can talk to him, dear. He can hear you."

Tara gulped, and tried to sound cheerful. "Hey honey, its me, Tara. How're you feeling?" No response. Lilly joined Tara at the bed. "Hey Alex, its Lilly."

Tara sighed, and leaned over Alex's sleeping body. She kissed him gently on his lips, attempting not hurt his cut up face. Alex's eyelids fluttered slightly, making Tara smile sadly. He could tell that she was there.

One of the doctors mumbled slightly. "Oh no..."

Mrs. Green turned as pale as her broken son. "What? What is that supposed to mean?"

The machine tracking Alex's heart beat was pulsing faster, the peaks of the green lines becoming smaller and closer together. Mrs. Green became hysterical, and ran to her son's bed. Crying she rubbed his unbroken hand. "Honey? Its Mommy." One of the doctors turned to her.

"He's trying to fight it, Mrs. Green." he whispered. "He's not going to make it, this is just causing more pain for him."

Mrs. Green nodded. "Alex? You don't need to do that. You can go sweetie. I... I know you're in pain. I just want you to know that we love you, baby."

Alex's eyelids made the slightest attempt at opening. Tara rubbed his forhead gently, as Mrs. Green continued. "You can go now, kiddo. You don't need to stay around for us. Don't worry about us."

The pulse machine was beeping faster, constantly speeding up. After a few seconds, the green mountains became a single line, and the beeping became a constant drone. Mrs. Green broke down, and dropped herself into the chair by the bed.

Tara clung to Lilly, and they cried together. Alex's body seemed to sink a bit more into the pillows, and his pained face seemed to be at peace. The doctors left the room, as an owl hooted sadly outside of the hospital window. The stars twinkled outside the faded curtains, as the moon began its descent below the horizon.

Well I usually love these sorts of stories...but I am not sure I want to read it again....

Besides arn't you supposed to only tell most of the story, and leave a bit at the end or in between to be revealed in the next part?

Anyway Enthralled out of Enthralled and Pretty darn good out of Excellent...
