I've always wondered, how do you run air runes? I realize now would not be the right time to start running, because of the 3k trade cap, but I'm still curious.

Basically, a runner has a full inventory of essence, they go into the altar, they trade the crafter some exchange such as (10k for the pure ess\4x the airs). Then you run back to the bank and redo everything, runners benefit by getting a lot more money per ess then they normally would crafting themselves, and crafters get experience.
