Damaged armor can be repaired in a player-owned house, yielding a random piece of armor, of any type, in return. It's pretty much just droppable junk though.

 

 

 

I'm not sure on the dig site quest, but if you're having too much trouble you can purchase charcoal from the general store in Ardougne.
