He has written over fifty works, most horror, but some are fantasy and sci fi (I'm looking at the dark tower). He has influenced my works, and its mostly because of his convuluted writing. My favorite book of his is called "The Shining". It is about a hotel in the Colorado mountains that closes for winter, and a man takes the job of caring for it over this period. As he does, he becomes crazy, and it seems that ghosts are making him crazy. Or are they, was it just because he was going crazy himself? Most of you have probably seen the movie, but it does not compare to the sheer power of the book. It left you toying with the concept, wondering why Jack tried to kill his wife and son. This has been an influence on me deeply. Leaving the reader to figure something out is a great way to make you feel somewhat involved in the story, allows you to work on background stories yourself. And when you read a book, and there are still questions in your head, you know the author did his job. His Dark tower books are also a huge part of what makes him my favorite author. They mixed in with most of his books, which was really neat. Never has an author made books that were completely different, and been able to tie them together. He even included himself in the story! An amazing series that only Stephen King could write. So, if you have never read a book by him, try his works. He is one of the best authors you will ever read. __________________________________________________________________________________ ----Stories---- ----Oceans---- As I write this on the sand using blood from the back of my hand I look at the neverending ocean It waves come down and lap at my feet It provides me with fish to eat The abandoned island I stand on today could easily get washed away The plane crashed here several days ago I was working on a travel channel show The turbines sucked in a bird And a whining the pilot heard We crashed into the islands mountains The plane created a water fountain I got out nearly every bone broken I got to the sand, my whole body sodden Please help me I am starving bad If I die I will not be too sad its the way the world works, can't play with god So to my cave, before night falls, I'll trod. __________________________________________________________________________________ WANT TO CONTRIBUTE? Harakiri
Volume 1 Issue 2 The Japan Issue ------------------- Welcome all to the second edition of the Varrock Libraries weekly newspaper! In the news this week, Hawkxs has created the two banners above that we thank her greatly for. Also in the news, this weeks paper deals with, of all things you want to hear about, Japan! We will focus strongly on its horror more than its anime and manga, though that will have a minor spotlight. --------------------- NEW TO THE LIBRARY: STORIES: Worst of the best or best of the worst-by Archangel A final goodbye-Deloriagod Anubis: While the gods watch-Ratchet573 My tip it times articles-Necromagus ----------------------- MISSING PERSON: Bluejay94 ----------------------- THE JAPAN ISSUE: ---------------------- JAPAN: BOOKS AND HORROR Many people know Japan for their animes and mangas. While these are great pieces sometimes, they pale in comparison to Japanese horror. I'm not talking about the live action movies either. Most of them are imitators of American horror, which I personally think is crap. I'm not talking Godzilla either, it was just created during a time when giant monster movies, and alien movies were the big hits. I'm talking about their portrayal of horror in video games and books. Let me start by saying that the prime examples of this are found in Devil May Cry, Castlevania, Resident Evil, and Silent Hill. They all include weird monsters that are created biologically, or by other means. Some of them are better than others though. My favorite are Castlevania and Devil may Cry, because they invent monsters and characters that we know from our childhood and place them in real life environments. While zombies are all well and good, the games about Dracula and Satan are better because we know these characters, have heard stories about them. So, lets move on to the main article... --------------------------------------- HIDEYUKI KIKUCHI: VAMPIRE HUNTER D As I write this, I am on the third book. I own all eleven in the series so far, and find them to be exciting, violent, and touch on more familiar turf then some of the stories more focused on scaring you with blood, gore and wierd monsters. These books are based in our world in the year 12,090. Vampire Hunter D is a dhampir, a half human half vampire, who is the son of Dracula, the greatest vampire to ever live. In the year 1999, the countries of the world set nukes at each other, which caused nearly every human except for a few to be wiped out. The few that survived ended up getting enslaved by a mutant race known as vampires. After thousands of years of being enslaved, the humans started a war against the vampires, and after years of violence they won, sending the vampires to various parts of the world. So on the verge of extinction the vampires are being hunted by hunters. The hunters kill them usually on request. Thats the main premise of the books, and each one tells a different tale about the man known as D. They feel like your reading an anime (a good one). They are action-packed, and the stories are exciting. The books never falter, and while sometimes there are points that seemed to have been tacked on, and some of the story needs serious explanation (if D's half vampire, why is he trying to kill off his own race?), they are enjoyable. The style of them is kind of odd. Its less description, more action and story. So, if your into these kind of things, its deffinately worth a look. If you want horror that looks more into scaring you using real world stuff instead of "Hellish demons that Satan conjures from his tonsils", then these are enjoyable. I get a lot of inspiration from them, and the author, who has written the series for 30 years. ----------------------------- Letters to the Editor: Got a question? Ask me anything (within reason)! PM me any question. Doesn't even have to be writing related! --------------------------- HELP WANTED: This weeks paper could not have worked without the help of Hawkxs! Thanks a lot! If you would like to contribute anything to me for the paper, PM me and I'll make sure you get a place in this paper! -------------------------- STORYTIME: The hotel is located on a small island in the Caribbean. Many go due to the beautiful views of the water. Surrounding the hotel is not a beach but a garden. The garden is just a cover up though, for the graveyard below. Three bodies lay beneath the garden. Some say that the bodies may be there, but the spirits stay. This is the story of one mans stay, and the evil he awakened. James Kingsley stood outside of the hotel, a large tower like structure sitting in the middle of a small island, smelling the array of flowers. The water lay fourteen feet in front of him, and as he looked over to see if any creatures were going to walk onto the shore, he noticed a figure. It was a woman, a beautiful figure who wore a blue dress. James ran over to her. "Hello there, do you like the hotel?" James asked. He then noticed the woman was transparent. He reached out to touch her. The hair on the back of his neck stood as his hand entered her, a cold sensation rushing through him. The woman then turned to look at him. He noticed where his hand was, and wretched back. The woman looked sternly at him, and dropped a brown clipping of hair that had been clenched in her fist, right into the water. It went out to sea. The woman looked at the hair, a tear welling up in her eye, and then looked back at James. "You bastard!" She screamed. Her face contorted. Her eyes turned red, her hair turned greyish, and her mouth morphed to the size of the wash basin in James hotel room. James ran, screaming. He went to the front door of the hotel, and tried the knob. It was locked. He then banged his clenched fists against it. "Let me in!" He looked over his shoulder and saw the woman coming towards him. He screamed more. "WHERE IS MY DAUGHTER?" The woman asked in a menacing tone. James felt as if he would cry. "I don't know!" Suddenly, the sea turned into blood. James screamed and began beating on the door harder, until he suddenly felt it open and saw a little girl. "Wheres mommy?" She asked, a billowing white dress flowing behind her. "Is that your mom?" James pointed at the creepy woman behind him. "I don't know." "What?" The woman was now right behind James and grabbed him. She threw him through the door, and suddenly James lye on the wooden floor of the hotel. The man at the desk ran to him and got him up. "What happened?" He asked. "A woman. She was after me!" "Oh god. Not Amy." "Who the hell is she?" "Dead for nearly a hundred years. She was the wife of the first owner of this hotel. Her daughter was six, and having a party. All of her friends were playing outside, and she told them to come into the sea with her. She went out, and the current pushed her far out. She ended up drowning. Her mother went out and fetched the body, and buried the remains out on the beach. Then, her second daughter was thought to be going crazy because she saw her sister running around the hotel. Her father wanted her to snap out of it. She ended up going nuts, and killing herself. Her mother tried to stop her, but could not. Her daughter was being held by her hair when she found the hair in her fist, and her daughters knife slit. That's when she killed herself. There remains were buried on the beach, and the owner built a garden over it, so he would never be reminded of the women in his life." James gawked. "That is sad..." "Very. She searches for her daughters, but cannot find them." "But why me? Why did she decide to come after me?" "I do not know." James went to his room to contemplate everything. After a nice dinner, he went to bed. Three nightmares plagued his sleep. James stood with many little children on a beach rife with shells of all shapes and colors. Some of the children held little morsels of sweets. He noticed one girl stood out from the rest, a girl only about four and a half feet tall, with beautiful blond curls, and wearing a bathing suit. She waved her little hands and everyone switched their attention from the food to her. "Who wants to swim?" She asked, and ran out to the sea. James wanted to yell not to, but felt it being suppressed by some power. The girl ran out to the water, and suddenly was going out further and further. James tried to move but was stuck in place. The girl screamed, and there were splashes. None of the kids went in after her, because it would be foolish to do so. Her mom ran out, and looked around. The children screamed and the mom ran to the nearby boat, tied up to a stake placed in the sand, and grabbed a machete, cutting the rope. Some of the kids jumped into the boat. It went to the last place the kids saw a splash, and the mom tied a rope around her waist and spoke to the kids, before jumping into the water. A few moments later, she came up with a sopping wet body. James awoke at this part. James fell asleep again. Now, he was staring at an older girl, maybe fourteen. She sat on her bed, and stared at the wall, talking to nothing. She soon stood, and began to walk away. Next, James watched an argument between her and her red haired father. "There is no such thing as a ghost. You are crazy. You belong in an asylum!" After more outbursts from her father having to do with being crazy, he found himself watching her mom, running into the kitchen. He chased her, and ended up in a small, dingy kitchen. The daughter had a knife in her hand. Her mother charged her and grabbed her hair, trying to wrestle the knife out of her hand. It did not work. The girl elbowed her mothers stomach, and cut the hair out from beneath her mothers hand. Her mom held an armful of hair now, and watched helplessly as her daughter slit her throat, blood flying all over the cabinets and kitchenware. James awoke again. When he fell asleep, he suddenly saw the mom, setting a chair under a rope, the end having a noose. She stood on the chair, and put her head into it. She then kicked the chair out from underneath herself and her neck snapped, her head rolled, and she was dead, hanging there, waving back and forth like a pendulum. James awoke, and this time found that it was eight in the morning. He put on some clothes, and went down to breakfast. After a hearty helping of pancakes, he went out to the garden. That was his mistake. "Hello?" He asked. There was a whisper. "Where is my daughter?" "She is here with you! You are blind! Look for her! I saw her yesterday." "LIAR!" Suddenly she materialized. James ran to the door as the woman chased him, her teeth now as big as a dinosaurs. James beat on the door again, and then found it open after the third knock. Two girls were in the entrance. "Join us, help is find mommy." James screamed. He ran past them, and tripped. The three women now surrounded him. James screamed even more, and suddenly, a red haired man came in and jumped the women. James stood. "Please, help them!" The red haired man said, lying over the women. "How?" "How do dead people find each other?" He asked. James thought for a moment. "Gravestones!" He said. "Right! Please, help them!" James ran outside and searched the plants. The hotel owner poked James. "What the hell is going on. You screamed gravestones in there, looked like you were thrown down, and then ran out here." "Gravestones! Need to indicate where the women's bodies are!" "What?" "The red haired man, the dad, told me!" "We got some planks downstairs. We also got some sharpies and nails and a hammer." "Good enough! Come on!" James stood outside. He had written a gravestone for the mom, who was named Amy Kolet. He was nailing the second one for the oldest daughter, when he suddenly felt a sting in his stomach. Four nails had pierced his stomach. He screamed and continued working. "STOP!" He yelled. "I am here to help you!" He finished the gravestone for the oldest daughter, Jackie Kolet, when he felt a sharp pain in his back. "STOP!" He yelled as more nails rose. He started nailing the planks together. He then wrote the youngest daughters name, Michelle Kolet, when he felt more pains. He started to place them upright in the Earth. More and more pain came until suddenly, he felt a slice down his stomach. Blood rushed out. He noticed two more planks. He started to nail them together when he felt another slice down his stomach. He started writing on it. Then, he placed it upright, just as he saw his guts fall out of a wound in his stomach. The last thing James Kingston ever heard was a scream from the hotel owner. "NO! JAMES!" He screamed. He looked at the body, now a bloody mass of nails. His lower intestines lye on the ground now, blood oozing around them. The owner then looked away at the graves. There were four, not three. He looked at the fourth on. On it, it said: JAMES KINGSTON; DIED FOR SAVING THOSE WHO NEEDED SAVING The owner went to the basement of the hotel, and took a shovel. He then dug a grave for James, and buried him. He then sold the hotel and left, never to return. James Kingston felt the embrace of the three women, and hugged them back. "Thank you for finding my children." Amy Kolet said. James embraced her harder and said: "Your welcome." He then walked backwards and asked: "What happened? Why am I dead?" Suddenly, the red haired man came into view. "It was not any of our faults. By helping the dead, you condemn your soul. It is against law to help the deceased. We have our fates, and our fates have now changed. The gods are against that, and now you must join us as we take the test of heaven." "How are mortals to know this? Why did you tell me to help?" "Because he is a demon!" Amy yelled. The red haired man laughed and suddenly disappeared. "That is why your here, you are a perfect soul. Satan detests those who are perfect. You are a fated angel, and he wanted to kill you before you could complete the deed you were sent to Earth to accomplish." "Then where is your real husband?" "He was reincarnated." "Into who?" "You." Suddenly, he remembered it all. He embraced Amy, and they kissed. He then held his children close, tears welling in his eyes. Harakiri
Volume 1 Issue 3 Another Format ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEWS: _______ Over the course of the past couple issues, I have been changing various things, trying to find a "comfort zone", and area that the paper can work more on. While, overall the paper has been doing pretty good, and people are supporting it, it still needs to find something to focus more on. The previous two have jumped about, taking on different subjects from Stephen King, to Japan. While the stories may be a selling point, it still does not make the reader feel excited when every week they move from something cool to something boring, to something that doesn't matter. This week, I am going to focus on authors, and writing as a whole. While their might be some specific things we look at, it will not be exactly from my interests, but from everyones interests as a whole. We are writers, and we want to read about writing! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WRITERS STORIES: _________________ Learning from other peoples a large part of writing. While theres a lot to gain from how people got into writing and why they do it, theres probably more to tell. Please contact me if you want to talk about your story, but if not...I'll be asking you myself... Anyways, this weeks about me so here goes... RATCHET573 I pride myself in being weird and odd. It all began in the second grade. My story for some kind of contest had to be written fast. I wrote it fast, and as such, it sucked balls. It was about the Earwax monster (an idea I got from Edd, Ed, and Eddy) and it was horrendous. It was about, of all things, the spirit of haloween... After quite a few years of not writing for the public, I found the tip it forums, where my dad bought and sold stuff, and decided to try my hand at Runescape comedies. Everyone remembers Snake and Noob, and everybody remembers how goddamn bad it was. While I wanted to touch on key parts of Runescape that sucked, I ended up with convoluted, and twisted stories that made no sense...and my writing did not help. I was not particularly good I thought, so I continued to write for the past couple years, trying to find a comfortable spot to sit, and write on. While fantasy is my main favorite, I soon learned that I liked writing westerns, and horror. My writing style has grown greatly since Snake and Noob, and I think its sharper, and a bit easier to read. I've always been disjointed though. Some stuff sounds like a cool idea, and then I get bored and move onto something else, which is probably why I have seventy five stories up here that have not gotten finished... At the moment, I am writing my first full length novel, about a guy selling his soul to Satan, science experiments gone wrong, a little girl transformed into a harpy, her brain placed in a computer, and other such things that make no sense. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WRITING TALK: FROM MIND TO PAPER ___________________________________ As you read above, I am starting to write a full length novel, which makes this the perfect oppurtunity for me to talk about getting an idea to paper. Most authors have a myriad of ideas. Most stem from things other authors have wrote. Some stem from gaming, and television. Some stem from the real world. Ideas are a growing database. Usually though, you have just one idea you want to put down, the others are alright, but you feel are not good enough for the publics eyes. Some people expand their ideas in their head. I do this, and think up a plot before putting it to paper. Its usually a basic outline of whats going to happen, but sometimes I expand further. After this, I move to the paper, where I place the idea alongside many others I have had. Keeping a journal of ideas is never a bad idea, because someday, you may look back and say "Thats a good idea". After the idea is down, writing a plotline is the next step. It usually includes all major parts of the plot, character development, places, and all that. Most of the time, I add in extra, which is alright. When writing a story, using a giant poster board is good. When another idea comes, adding it to the plot on the board will help you understand your plot further. Thats the things I do, and they work. If you have any other ideas, then please post them below! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THIS IS NOT JUST A PAPER! ________________________ While some of you may think this is just one, boring guy talking about writing, then you should think again. A bunch of boring guys could be adding on to this! Help us out by sending me anything you want placed in the paper! Also, why don't you discuss down below! Until the next paper, this is the ideal spot for authors to really talk about the thing they care about, writing! Add on to articles, talk about topics covered in this paper, and also, duke it out each week with our new feature, the DEBATE QUESTION! The debate question will be posted somewhere in the paper each week, and whoever has the best argument wins a point. Everyone who wins gets their name and number of points in each paper. DEBATE QUESTION: _________________ Do the reviews for a book help in your purchase of it? ANOTHER POEM: ______________ My whole life has sucked...Everyone knows. I lived my life waiting for something excting to happen. Nothing did, except for her. She came in an instant. She left just as fast. She knew me so well, I loved her so much. But she just left, after all we did. Felt like an instant, but it was actually more than two. We were together for two years. The happiest of my life. Now, I write my will, my final testament. May god save my soul... I am hanging in the attic. A noose around my neck. Do not leave me there. Burn my body so I can have no more heart attacks. My love will burn deeply. And my soul will to... How I wish she could have thought this through. Hand this poem below to her. Tell her not what happened, just that I left. I will never come back... I am in Nevada. Area 66. "My love let me talk You knew me well I now am in hell Good job [bleep] you killed me See you in hell!" Well, thats not great, but that [bleep] needs to know. When she grows up she'll probably be a hoe. I hate her now. Now she knows. I knew it from the beginning. She grew on me though like mushrooms on my feet. And before I knew it I loved her. Her lips were like the tastiest meat. She ran though, that friggin [bleep]. I hate her now forever. She moved on to a jock cuz god forbid she take a goth... So goodbye people I'll look down on you... But probably up the way I went But make sure you tell that [bleep] Its not hell but her, I resent. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONTRIBUTIONS GREATLY APPRECIATED! ANSWER DEBATE QUESTION! NEXT WEEKS SPOTLIGHT GOES ON DOUGLAS ADAMS!
Harakiri
Volume 1 Issue 4 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEWS: -------- One month. Actually three weeks if you feel like being a smart arse... So after one month, I've only accomplished one thing, keeping you entertained for a bit. No one seems to be sending anything in and eventually I'm gonna need something because people will get bored of reading my stuff... Anywho, this issue deals with Douglas Adams, and some other stuff I feel like talking about. Thanks to the people who actually read this too, its nice to know I'm not just writing this for the hell of it...(though I guess I am). WINNER: ---------- Last week I asked you if the reviews on books help you purchase a book. Nom Anor won. At the end of this issue, read this weeks question, and let me give you the basic gist of the argument: Do the reviews for a book help in your purchase of it? ----------------------------------------------------- Reviews can be good and bad. Basically what it boils down to is knowing what reviewers to listen to. Crap like Twilight and Eragon get good reviews as part of a marketing strategy, not because they have any actual merit. I'm sitting here with a copy of Brisingr from my brother's school library and snorting at the review snippets on the back cover. I wouldn't be surprised if the reviewers are being paid to lie through their teeth. I find that customer reviews are often more helpful than professional ones, if you can get a ton of them from a site like Amazon and see how the good/bad ratio works out. But in the end it's always a risk to buy a new book. If I'm unsure, I head to the library. AUTHOR FOCUS: DOUGLAS ADAMS ------------------ 42. That is my favorite number. Why? Because it is the answer to life, the universe, and everything. Douglas Adams is the author of the Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy trilogy (there are two more, but I never thought them any good). In these books, Arthur Dent ends up best friends with an alien named Ford Prefect, who saves him when the Earth is destroyed. Why are these books so great? The premise sounds simple... They are great because Douglas Adams was a comic genius. When talking about the simplist thing, he could make the most humorous description you have ever heard. He also created a cast of crazy characters. Marvin the Paranoid Android. Some people say R2-D2 and C-3PO are the greatest robots in fiction. No, they do not compare to Marvin. Anyone who loves sci fi should definately pick this up. It is hilarious! The movie from 2005 is also pretty good, though added in some pointless plot devices. GENRES: SCI FI ---------------- I enjoyed sci fi for quite a while as a kid, but now as a teen I get bored by most of it. Sci fi seems to be big with kids, and also some adults love the genre. So, lets talk about Sci Fi. First of all, my favorite Sci Fi book is Dune by Frank Herbert, and amazing piece of literature that anyone into sci fi should read. Now, onto the problem at hand. Sci Fi books as of late have really been lacking in originality. As I read books by various authors, I seem the same hovercars and space ships and wierd aliens. While this formula has been proven to be the way to go, it just gets boring after a while. Fantasy is a genre that has the same basic ideas usually, but authors can change it and create great original stories. Why can't sci fi? I've noticed as of late that a lot of sci fi revolves around the Space Marines, which got its start with the creation of Halo. Now, a lot of books and a lot of video gams rip that off. The genre just seems to be kind of dying in the originality. While theres always a new star wars or Dune book, they just add on to a story, and usually do nothing revolutionary for the genre. We'll wait and see if anything can come out that really reinvents the genre. STORY: --------- The Evil Of Draynor ------------------- A new chapter every week only on the Authors Corner! Prologue: I was a child when my father died. A member of the newly formed Varrock guard, he took his post quite seriously. He would stay up long nights making sure that the evil the King had suppressed behind the gulch, now known as the wilderness, did not break free of the powerful magic encasing it. Evil has many definitions around the land, but if you ask a citizen of Varrock what evil is they would reply: "Are you stupid?"(Or some other remark)"The Wild!" I have lived most of my life in Varrock. When my dad died, protecting the King of Varrock from a renegade group of shades, my Mom hung herself. I remember the day afterwards clearly, even though I was young. Five years old to be precise. I woke up and searched the streets for my mom and dad. There was a commotion around the gallows. I wiggled my way through the crowd, only to see my mother, head in a funny position, her feet hanging inches from the pavement. The rope completely encompassed her neck so tightly, that someone had to get a very short knife to get the rope off. After he cut it, her body fell to the pavement. I ran to the body, crying. I grabbed her head and looked at her face. Her eyes stared at me, and I could have sworn I heard a voice in my head, that sounded like my mothers, saying sorry. My fathers neck was ripped open and part of his spinal cord extended out from the wound. Blood pooled beneath the body. I also looked into his eyes, but all I could see was white . No signs of emotion, no voice in my head, nothing. They were both buried next to each other in the castle garden. I visited them almost everyday until I was nine and the King found a mercenary who would train me for a hefty sum. The king paid it and I was soon used to swinging a sword and started fighting demons with the mercenary when I was thirteen. He knew I had a gift. After my training, at age fifteen, the mercenary and myself joined forces to complete missions for people who needed help. It was a great job, I earned some cash and honed my sword fighting skills a bit more. Soon the mercenary told me I could join the Mercs, an underground group that did anything they were told as long as the money was right. I stayed a year and got bored of the same missions of assassinations, destroying small villages of rogues, and escorting important people through dangerous places. I moved back to Varrock and worked with the king, helping him get some escaped fugitives killed or guarding the dukes when the annual Summer celebration came around. I loved my job, mostly because I got to help people of a political stature, and I was doing what my dad and mom would have wanted me to do. Protect Varrock CHAPTER 1: The shades all stood before a large village. It was called Draynor, and there was a castle being built in the lush forest to the North of the village, a perfect place to find some flesh to eat. Shades were cannibalistic creatures, who unlike vampires, feasted on flesh. They could survive for weeks without flesh but during those weeks, they would slowly lose power until finally they lost so much that they couldn't even bear the burden of wearing a cloak, and die from its weight. Sounds stupid but its true. Shades could be vicious and deadly creatures if they ate. But if not, well you could always ask the hero Krackov, he got to see one die from the burden of its cloak. He wrote a book on it, named "How I made a Shade die from the weight of its cloak". It was not a bestseller. Most libraries burnt it. It was declared a religion by a couple stupid kids. The library burned them. The shades continued looking at the cheery little village. Look at that old man with the odd glasses. He seems familiar... Someone yelled over from a nearby path. "Where the hell is the jail? I thought they were building one right over here!" The man was a short, balding, fat, and probably drunk person. A young girl of about fourteen, probably his daughter, walked next to him, her long blond hair flowing out behind her. "They said some ancient people made a sewer of some kind or the other beneath where they planned to put it, and the building of the jail has been postponed until Lord Draynor decides if he wants it built somewhere else, or just wants to make due with one of the houses no one lives in." "I heard it was going to be huge." "Apparently not, their paying too much for the construction of that castle so it will be a little one story building with two cells." "Then why the hell make one?" "They need it so if an enemy of the village comes they can throw him in there and interrogate him. There is a jail on the other side of the port to the west and we will use that for people the village does not have huge problems with." The man looked toward the shades and squinted. "You see anything in the trees hun?" "No dad...lay off the beer daddy. Its affecting your brain." "Yeah I guess." He continued to squint in the shades direction as he walked back toward the village. The shades made sure no one was in sight. Then they glided toward the construction site of the manor. About ten men were working. Some put stones in place, some were digging, some were sitting around like typical construction workers. But there was one man who caught the attention of the shades, a man dressed in a flowing cape and wearing a nice dark suit. His black hair was slicked back. He seemed to be telling the workers what to do. "You," he yelled, pointing at a man sitting and watching the other workers work,"Get off your lazy [wagon] and start putting these blocks in place. If not then you will regret it!" "Yes Lord Draynor!" The man got up and ran toward the other workers. The shades looked at that man in the suit, Lord Draynor, and tried to figure out what was so odd about him. An aura that no human could produce, seemed to hang around him. When the shades looked at the workers, they could see a faint trace of that same aura around them. Draynor turned towards the shades and stared at them. He had to be some kind of magician or otherworldly entity. His stare was not something that would make a shade turn away for it thought it might go blind if he continued to look. Maybe a human would do that, but not a shade. The lead shade kept the mans gaze. His aura seemed to suddenly start to radiate out towards the other workers, as if alerting them. "So shades," Draynor broke the silence,"I see you have come to eat our flesh." The shades continued to watch his aura, trying to figure out what it meant, what kind it really was. The aura wisped around the workers and they turned around to stare at the band of shades. "Now then Shades, shall we dance or shall we all be on our way? You would not like to die here in the middle of the woods, would you?" Draynor turned his back on them and spread his arms before him. "As you can see I am going to build an empire, I have gone through the ranks of the government and made enough money to build a village and a manor, and little do the people of that village know what will happen to them once they settle in! I will build an army!" And then, it hit the shades, bright as day. Those workers were second class vampires, bitten by a first class vampire, Draynor probably, and converted, having to do the bidding of the first class. The first class were pure blood vampires. They were born vampires, and will live their whole life as a vampire. They were very powerful beings, but if you had the right materials, they were easy to kill. "So, will you leave, or will we have to shred your only remaining valuable, your soul?" The shades stood there and decided. On the other side of the forest, the old drunken man listened in. He had followed the shades, not caring what his daughter said. He heard the whole thing and ran to tell the village when a bolt of electricity hit him in the back. Lord Draynor hovered towards him and looked down at his limp body. The old man could not move. He tried to scream but could not. The vampire fell to the ground and the last thing the man could feel before he passed out were the monsters smooth hands on his head and the teeth clamping onto his neck. _____________________________________________________________ As I continued to climb the ranks of the Varrock guards, an attack on the city made me lose my stature. When I was doing so well, and making the big money, I allowed a bunch of children to make the city a living hell. They made a base in the city, and there was apparently one adult there. They were grabbing men from the back streets of Varrock and killing them. Some people thought they were cannibals, some thought they were sent from Zamorak. I found out about them the first murder. I ran through Varrock searching for them. I found a large house, and decided to enter and see what was inside. Nobody resided in the house...but then, I found a trap door hidden under a rug. I went down, not knowing what would happen. The scene I saw would be imprinted in my brain for the rest of my life, just like my mother and father's dead bodies. Men, naked and bleeding, were strapped to chairs. Children, carrying knives, ran around. One of the men held his hand out to me. That hand was chopped off by one of the children. That child met my gaze, and I saw nothing but hatred in his eyes. He knew not to run for me. He knew I would strike him down. My hand was on my swords hilt as I progressed slowly through the room. The dirt floor was moist. The bodies of the dead hung from a chandelier, hands tied so that the body dangled down. The children stared. I knew they were crazy. I would not turn my back on any of them. I was not going to die. At the other end of the room, I found a door. I opened it and the shock of my adulthood came. There was my master from when I was a child. There he was in bed with a crying woman. There he was raping a woman. He looked at me and walked naked, toward his clothes. I closed the door and let him dress. I was going to kill him like any proper swordsman. "Why are you doing this to these children?" "It is not my fault, I am a mercenary, and it was my job to stay with these children and allow them to drink the blood of humans. In return I got money, and any women they found would be in bed with me." I drew my sword and plunged it into his belly. "You bastard...I don't care if it was a mission...you don't screw with women like that... who the hell are those children?" As blood stained his teeth and gushed out of his wound, around my still plunged sword, he said, "It was the council..." More blood, this time dripping from his mouth. "What council?" "Vampires." His mouth foamed, and I drew my sword from his stomach. He fell before me. The woman on the bed drew the blanket around herself and ran from the room. Before I could follow her up the ladder, I felt a sharp pain on the back of my leg. I looked and saw a small kid holding onto a knife, planted in my skin. I kicked backward and the hilt of the knife hit the child, smashing some of his teeth to shards. Suddenly, a bombardment of children, all plunging knives into my legs. I tried to pull myself up the ladder. A sharp pain kept me from focusing. A knife was planted in my thigh. I tore it out and threw it at a child climbing the ladder. I barely escaped with my life. The King made me a lower ranked guard after I was out of the hospital facility in the castle. He told me I should have blown them up with an explosive potion, or just killed them with my sword. Apparently, they had got away and were now operating in Falador, killing white knights. I would get my revenge... CHAPTER 2: Garth broke the silence in the small pub. All the men stared as he pulled his cloak off and showed his armor. He was an enforcer. They were a group of people who made sure the law was kept everywhere they went. That sucked that this enforcer decided to come today of all days. "All of you put the ale down and your hands up!" He drew his sword and waved it menacingly in front of him. A drunk man, the strongest man in the pub, wobbled toward the enforcer. "What'cha gonna do if we don'?" The man asked and raised a fist. The enforcer stared at the man menacingly and sheathed his sword. "Well, would you mind sitting down while I solve this problem?" The big man swung at the enforcer. The air in front of the enforcer shimmered and suddenly, he was behind the big guy. "Should not have tried." The enforcer punched the big guy. He flew through the wall and into a farming patch. "Now then," the enforcer said cheerily,"please stop yelling, the neighbors are trying to read and cannot with you yelling like you are. So please keep quite or you may end up like the big man out there...maybe he'll sprout some sense after he wakes up in that farming patch! Get it?" Most were too drunk to get it while others tried to figure out why someone would make such a stupid joke as that. "Cheerio." The man said and left. .................................................... Kandra watched the enforcer from a wall on the other side of the pub. She was going to kill that idiot. For what he did to her. Kandra was eighteen when she commited a murder. She killed an old man who witnessed her stealing something. And then a year later she killed another person. And it continued for years. And then he came along and seduced her. Enticed her. Acted like they were lovers. The day they were supposed to get married he arrested her. He was a nasty man. Seduce a girl and be her lover for months, and then at the wedding, arrest her in front of her friends and family? It was embarrassing. She continued to watch him. She thought about killing him right there, but that was too risky. Too many witnesses would see it. She would follow him and find a secluded little spot to kill him at. Her thoughts were cut short when some unseen force shoved her over the wall. She fell to her feet. She did not know much but she knew enough to keep her alive. There he was, laughing. "Hello my sweet girl, how have you been doing since last we met?" "You..." "Me? Well I have been having a jolly good time with the enforcers. Just last week I..." "Shut up you chauvinistic bastard!" "Wow...a feisty little one. How am I chauvinistic?" "You seduced me so you could trap me when I least expected. I don't think you plan weddings with men and arrest them at the wedding do you?" "No I don't, but it was a good plan, wasn't it? It worked." "I will kill you...you made my family hate me. My friends walked away from me without a word. Two years in prison and no one sent me a letter...and why? Because you had to do it in front of my family!" "You think you can kill me? I could easily defeat you." "Try me." "I have...it was good." "You sick little..." And Garth took that moment to conjure a spell and direct it a her. It smashed into her stomach and sent her flying into the wall. She passed out. "I am sorry, but it was the only way." Garth walked away and did not look back. ............................................... Kandra awoke to see a face. "I know you!" She began to get to her feet. "You should. I am Lord Draynor. And I have a proposition for you..." -------------------------------------------------- DEBATE QUESTION: Has Sci Fi been dying as of late? Harakiri
AN ISSUE BY NOM ANOR! "] Volume 1 Issue 5 News: Due to the temporary departure of ratchet573, I will be taking over management of The Authors Corner indefinitely. Hopefully ratchet will be back in a few weeks, and until then you can expect the paper to continue as normal. Actually, I hope that there will be some changes. We really do need others to contribute. That is why next week I hope to include one of the users of the Varrock Library as the author spotlight. If you would like to be featured, please write a paragraph, or two, or however many is necessary to address how you write, why you write, when you started writing, and anything else you would like to talk about. PLEASE DO THIS! We would love to hear more about you! Debate Question Winner: Due to lack of responses, there is no winner of last weeks debate question. Hawkxs and myself were the only ones to respond, so thank you hawkxs. See the end of the paper for this weeks question. Author Profiles: George R.R. Martin Most if not all of you probably have not heard of GRRM. This is a real shame, because he is arguably the most skilled writer on the market today. Unfortunately you probably havent read any of his books either. He has worked on many projects, not only books but television shows as well, including the new Twilight Zone, but is best known for his fantasy epic A Song of Ice and Fire. The first novel, A Game of Thrones, was published in 1996, and the fourth and most recent, A Feast for Crows, in 2005. A Dance with Dragons, the fifth of a projected seven (after the series was extended from a trilogy) is slated to be released sometime this year after numerous delays.* Martins storytelling is notoriously dark and brutally unforgiving to his characters. The common writing phenomena of invincible heroes and Mary-Sues are virtually nonexistent; to date, eight point-of-view characters have been written out of A Song of Ice and Fire. No character is same from the pen of GRRM, and because each of his characters is unique and real, readers can easily form attachments that may be unmercifully severed. This may put some readers off, but in my humble opinion it makes the story that much better. Speaking of story, it is heavily influenced by the Wars of the Roses, being basically a war of succession that has developed to a far greater scope as the series continues. I cannot recommend this series enough. One word of caution: can be very, very sexually explicit. Not for young readers. Other than that, there are no reasons I can think of for anyone not to read ASoIaF. While youre at it, check out some of GRRMs other works as well! Cover art for the first five books. (A Dance with Dragons has yet to be released.) *A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons were originally planned to be one novel under the title of the latter, but it grew too large and was split. Because of this, ADwD was expected to be released in 2006. To the great frustration of fans, it has been delayed numerous times. Harakiri
Volume 1 Issue 6 DOUBLE ISSUE ________________________ NEWS ------- Due to Nom and I having made no issue last week, I put it upon myself to put together two weeks worth of information. As you may have noticed over the past couple weeks (almost two months now), the format changes a lot. We here at The Authors Corner are trying to find a more enjoyable format for both of us. A couple weeks back, Nom wrote an issue, and thanks to him for filling my shoes while I was gone, he did a great issue. Also, he gave me the idea to buy "A Game of Thrones (pretty good so far, if you want to know). This week, we focus on comics. If anything, we will focus more on various forms of writing instead of just novels. There are quite a few jobs to do with writing, including journalism, comic writing, script writing for movie and TV, and critic. Comics such as Batman and Spider Man will be examined, as well as Japanese Manga's. Also, we will have a whole section based on web comics, and sprite comics. _______________________________________________________ DC COMICS ------------- DC comics started a large boom in the comic industry. In the late 30's they created Detective Comics (what the company's named for) and it would usually involve a couple short comics with various heroes and villains. Soon, Batman came out of it, one of the first "real" superheroes. Though he really isn't super. Before that, Superman was created, making him the basis for generic comic characters. Over the years, DC has brought out the Justice League and other huge comic icons. Including the Watchmen, which is considered the single best comic series ever. Combining psychological and real world situations to create the perfect imitation of what a super heroes life would really be like. The comic, in my opinion, is one of the most depressing pieces of fiction ever and it is ruthless in the telling of the story. ------------------- OPINION ----------------- Yes, I am giving my opinion. I like DC. Batman has always been a kickarse character. He needs no superpowers to fight crime, all he needs is gadgets and pure brute strength. Superman used to be my favorite. He was kind of neat, had a lot of power, and was an alien! But I got older and found it was too boring. The storylines never seem to change and I still do not understand how in the hell nobody can tell that Supes is actually Clark Kent. If I put on a pair of glasses, everyone would think I'm someone else? I love Watchmen and love Rorschach the most. He's awesome. Plain and simple. If the upcoming film adaption sucks, the people who made it should either kill themselves, or run into a cave somewhere no one would look, because the fans are murderous. ______________________________________________ MARVEL COMICS: ------------------- Marvel is the biggest comic book company, pumping out fifty something comics a month. They created such greats as the Incredible Hulk, Spider-man, The Fantastic Four, and (my favorite) The Punisher. Anyone who has ever read an older Marvel Comic might notice the amazing amount of story that went into most of the characters. All the bad guys had back stories and there was a huge amount of characters in the background. Also, they made a world where heroes fight and nearly always have fights between favorite heroes. While DC has had Batman and Supes fight thirty thousand times, the latest Marvel epic, Civil War, brought together all characters in a series that took up nearly every characters comic. The fights were great, and it was a nerd-out. They are also comedic. The Marvel Zombies were a hilarious look at the world of Stan Lee and others, and then the spin off Army of the Dead Vs. Marvel Zombies was awesome. It had Ash in it. Bruce Campbell. The single greatest actor alive. Anyone? ---------------------- OPINION ---------------------- I love Marvel. Though they did have endorsed Who Wants to Be a Superhero, the epitome of "This show is sooooo bad but I can't stop watching". The Punisher is cool I think. He was a character that could compete with Batman. He was a human with gadgets, and a bunch of guns. But, he was different from Bats because he was poor. He drove around in a beat up van and usually staked out in abandoned buildings. Also, as mentioned, they continued the epic Evil Dead series with the comics. Anyone who does that wins forty thousand brownie points in my book. _____________________________________ OVERALL: -------------- These companies have really gone down in quality lately. It does not reflect the original product, the original character. Pick up the latest issue of the Punisher for instance. Inside, there are tons of panels were all it is is a drawing, and no dialogue. And all of the dialogue usually has some kind of cussing in it. There are also tons of ads. But not the cool ones with clipouts for magic kits and all that stuff, but instead for other crappy comics. Remember when Spiderman had to explain why he was web swinging down the street after he explained he was chasing a bad guy? Remember when every panel contained everyones thoughts, forms of dialogue. Sure every once in a while there would be some fight and there would be no dialogue, but it still reflected that they cared. Also, the prices are rediculous. Four to five dollars for a 32 page comic that I'll read in ten minutes and then either throw away or put in a sleeve and let rot for twenty years till its worth its face price on Ebay? I've given up on comics to tell the truth. I have behind me about two hundred old 90's superman comics and maybe 500 other random early 90's DC comics. Those are probably the only comics that will be in that box until something groundbreaking comes out, or theres a comic book about Bruce Campbell's chin coming alive and killing the Marvel Universe. ______________________________________________ MANGA ------------ Shonen Jump and other make up the Japanese comic medium known as Manga. I got my first Shonen Jump magazine in July of 2004 at an airport. On the front was Shaman King, which I liked, and it also had Yu-Gi-Oh and Naruto (which would not be on air for another couple years). I bought it and was quickly obsessed with the magazine. I got every months. I loved it. But soon it got way too much into Naruto (which I think is way overhyped). So I gave up on it. I have not read manga in a while mostly because of how annoyingly bad its gotten. Everythings the same. Teenage angsty peoples with giatn swords and wierd hair either with giant robots or fighting demons. http://www.onemanga.com Here you can read nearly any manga for free. It has some rough translations but is still a cheap way to read manga. I used to like the medium, but it, like our American comics, is begging for something different. The same series keep going on, everyone rips everyone else off, and the stories start cool but keep going to the point that you want to murder. Also, there is the (I swear if you don't pick up a copy I'm going to keep mentioning this) Vampire Hunter D series. They are books and a manga, though I would suggest the books. The translation can be rough and quite a few of the books follow the same formula (which does get boring), but its different and its the first time I have read any Japanese authors books. ________________________________________________ WEBCOMICS: --------------------- I've been reading a lot of these lately. There are a couple different sub categories, but I won't mention them all because I only read one kind of webcomic, the sprite comic. There is an exception with one I'll mention though. There are tons of sprite comics out there, and they litter nearly everything. Most are crap, and I can barely read past the first strip without giving up. Anyone can do it, which is one reason its hard to find a good one. Basically, finding a good webcomic is hard. You have to wade through the crap to find the gem that you were looking for. Here are a couple I like. http://www.bobandgeorge.com Bob and George is a comic making fun of megaman. I thought it was really funny and it is over, so you can read through and don't have to wait every day for a new strip. http://www.mgcomics.com/ A whole site dedicated to sprite comics. Here you can find Sonic ones and a couple odd balls. I would suggest Tony the Hedgehog (it starts slow and mediocre but I thought it got pretty good later), Digglet and Pals (makes fun of pokemon kind of, its pretty funny in the obvious sense). The others range from bad to alright. --------------------------- OTHER: http://www.hlcomic.com/index.php?date=2005-05-01 Makes fun of Half Life 2 and is one of my all time favorite web comics. It is over, so you will be able to read through it. Its relatively short for a web comic. As the saying goes "short and sweet". _________________________________________________________ BOOKS: ------------ THE CHRONICLES OF THOMAS COVENANT THE UNBELIEVER --------------------------------------------------------- Stephen R. Donaldson wrote the first book in 1977. It was a fairly in your face rip off of Lord of the Rings. The writing style was the same, it borrowed a lot of stuff (there is a ring involved, the bad guys are called ur-viles). But, after reading the first book "Lord Foul's Bane", I grew to like it and enjoy the adultier side of it. Its about a guy with leprosy who's wife leaves him, and he is basically an outcast in the town. One day he gets run into by a police car and is taken to a fantasy land where he is hailed as the reincarnation of an ancient hero, Berek Halfhand. Thomas has only three finger left, so that is how they get that. People also think he is a hero because his ring from his marriage is made of white gold, which is magical and powerful in the land. I won't go into much detail because the story is so short that if I told you anything else I would spoil everything. His style makes the book 500 pages, when a more simplistic style could tell it in maybe two hundred. So far, there are eight in the series with the ninth coming out next year and the tenth and final coming out in 2013 if wikipedia is to be believed. A very good series for all fantasy fans out there. __________________________________________________ QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Who's better, DC or Marvel?
