Hey, sorry to say this is a script not a story :oops: .

 

Would really appreciate some critical feedback. Sorry for the random caps lock words the other person I am writing with insists we use the :roll: .

 

 

 

Title track fades into nothing.

 

 

 

ACT 1

 

EXT. UNZERVALT- DAY

 

 

 

Open on planet shot (something like the Blue Marble but Unzervalt instead of Earth), then ZOOMS progressively until this strangely circular region is seen with some large outcrop at its centre, which is also strangely circular. Outside of this rocky outcrop there is a dense forest region which extends for a mile (or few) in all directions.

 

As we get closer we see a young boy running towards the edge from near the centre. This is ZELNICK, his blue utility suit, which is more Ortog than fibre. Closer still and we see a gray haired old man appear from some sort of tunnel, near the centre. This is PROFFESSOR FARNSWORTH, a gray haired Xenologist with his battered, torn and grass stained lab coat flared out behind him as he looks around for a moment then takes off after the boy.

 

Begin short chase theme.

 

 

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH

 

ZELLL!

 

 

 

The camera CUTS to where FARNSWORTH is and proceeds to jump up and down as though the Camera man is running after Zelnick as well.

 

 

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH

 

Get back here you parasitical worm of an excuse...

 

 

 

Up ahead we see ZELNICK turn to see his chaser, only to slip on something and tumble head first into a roll that leaves him sprawled over.

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH

 

(More concerned now) ZELLL!

 

 

 

 

 

The camera CUTS to just behind ZELNICK, showing him trying to sit up and FARNSWORTH finally arriving.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

I know... I'm not supposed to be up here.

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH

 

Didnt you parents teach you ANYTHING! Your tomfoolery could compromise us all! Running around above the vegetation line in plain sight...Do you want to get us to get found out? Perhaps you think the Ur-Quan would reward you!

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH takes a deep breath, sighs and offers his hand to ZELNICK. ZELNICK refuses to take the hand and makes a show of sitting up and looking into FARNSWORTHs eyes. FARNSWORTH waits impatiently.

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH

 

Zelnick, what are you doing up here? *Pause* The facility is not one of your playground haunts. The data stored here is the only source of information about this planet. Without it how would we know what plants and animals we could eat? It might be our only hope of ever getting back to Earth...

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

I was just out walking and then I thought I heard someone following me and then I was looking for you to tell you that there might be an intruder but then I looked round and they were runn....

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH

 

Why do you persist with these lies? You know that I know about your midnight visits...I thought Burton had told you about what would happen if you continued to mess about with MY research site. I have tried to be reasonable, I have tried to tolerate your persistent rule breaking, but no longer! If I see you here again then I will personally march you up to Captain Burton and demand that you be flogged for your insubordination!

 

 

 

The conversation pauses as FARNSWORTH allows his temper to cool.

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH

 

Now unless you want me to do that right now I suggest you tell me what you were really doing here.

 

 

 

ZELNICK grins like an evil child tormenting it's parents by hiding their car keys.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

I don't think you would understand the concepts involved in what I was doing.

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH

 

Zelnick...I am hardly in the mood for this. I am one of, if not the most, prominent xenotechnologist in the Alliance. Whatever secrets you may have thought you uncovered are probably nothing more than directions to a Precursor bathroom.

 

 

 

ZELNICK pauses for a moment to consider a reply.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

I found that out months ago. Just hang a left at the Shiva Furnace.

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH looks away. He walks around ZELNICK so that his light shadow casts over him as he blocks the sunlight.

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH

 

Look at you, a wild animal- always running off on your own; unwilling to let anyone take care of you. We all have to work together! If we can't stick together we can't survive. You've been growing up away from the war; you have no idea what it's like. You think you can act like a spoiled little brat when the secrets of this place may be the very thing that saves us all?! What gives you the right to sabotage our progress?!

 

 

 

ZELNICK hauls himself to his feet and begins to LIMP away. FARNSWORTH follows.

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH

 

Your parents didn't stick together. Running off on some wilderness trek, and where did they end up? You want to waste your life like them...Dying on some God-Forsaken rock in the cluster of No-Wheres-Ville! Do you!?

 

 

 

ZELNICK turns around with the look of DEFIANCE in his eyes.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

MY PARENTS DIED BECAUSE PEOPLE LIKE YOU NEVER ACCEPTED THAT THEY WERE JUST BETTER THAN YOU. YOU HAVE TO BRING EVERYONE DOWN TO YOUR OWN PATHETIC LEVEL! CRUSHING THEIR SPIRIT AND AMBITION, JUST BECAUSE YOUR OWN LIFE IS NOTHING.

 

 

 

As the two of them stand there, heaving as though ready to tear the other limb from limb, a woman starts talking in a soft voice.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Your parents died because they were too arrogant to listen to reason.

 

 

 

The camera SWINGS round so that the impressive, if old, figure of BURTON, a rugged, strong female figure with a mother's grace and a snake's temperament dominates the skyline. She's dressed in tight Jodhpur style slacks with suspenders over a tight white tank and worn knee-high military boots. Her clothes are much better taken care of.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

And I don't remember YOU *Indicates FARNSWORTH* ever fighting with the Ur-Quan. How do YOU know what it's like?

 

 

 

The camera CUTS back to the pair of males looking at her with open mouths. ZELNICK and FARNSWORTH then look at each other, holding each others eye.

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH

 

He doesn't know the atmosphere, the constant fear, the perpetual helplessness, whether fighting or trying to find a way to fight, he doesn't know it.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

*Mimics voice* He doesnt know the atmosphere, the constant fear, the perpetual helplessness... What bull! You make out like you are some hard done by case who is constantly having to deal with troublesome kids but you dont let anyone else NEAR the site! You would like it very much if we all became farmers and let you amaze us with your piddling little discoveries *Mimics voice again * Look at this everyone, I have discovered fire!

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH

Camera CUTS to BURTON.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

FARNSWORTH! I Will NOT have you swearing at the children. Zelnick, walk with me.

 

 

 

Camera CUTS back to the pair.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

This isnt...

 

 

 

BURTON

 

NOW or I will show you the meaning of helplessness.

 

 

 

The camera remains on FARNSWORTH as ZELNICK walks off of shot. FARNSWORTH watches them both leave in silence. Once their footsteps have disappeared he looks as though he is about to make some kind of insult, but cant think of one, so turns about and walks in the opposite direction. The Camera remains in the same position, showing a few moments of the alien landscape and sky.

 

 

 

Camera CUTS to just in front of BURTON, who turns to face ZELNICK before she walks passed the camera.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Just what are we going to do with you?

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

It's not my fault! He's never going to figure it out.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Don't you dare! You never show up for your lessons, you run around out here like some deranged mutt. You disrupt the harvests and scare the Ortogs. You only show up for food or to pick fights with the other boys. So please, dont give me that superior being crap...The only chance we have of getting out of here is in Farnsworths hands.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

You don't like it here?

 

 

 

Camera cuts to a profile shot of both of them.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Zel, it might have escaped your attention but I am a Captain, a Captain of a Star ship. I am not comfortable anywhere that the gravity isnt simulated and the Coffee isnt cold. Then there are...other...commitments.

 

 

 

BURTON breaks eye contact for a moment, wiping something out of her eye. ZELNICK doesnt notice because he is now looking down at his feet.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

You mean fighting the Ur-Quan...Its not like I am trying to get in the way, I want to fight them too...its just, well, I can do it, I can use the computers in there! Julius Caesar in there just doesnt give me a chance!

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Jules is a very talented man, and no matter how much you or I dislike him we have to respect that he is the best man for the job. You cant keep annoying him like this, it makes my life impossible.

 

 

 

BURTON pauses to let ZELNICK consider her situation.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

How about this, as a compromise; I will talk to him about a test to find out just how good you really are, IF you come to my lessons for the next two weeks.

 

 

 

ZELNICK nods defeatedly and BURTON takes hold of his hand. The camera CUTS to ZELNICKs line of sight, which is directly aimed at the hand. BURTON then brings it up so that ZELNICK is looking right at her again.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Promise me.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

I...But...Two weeks?

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Just two weeks.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

And homework?

 

 

 

BURTON smiles,

 

 

 

BURTON

 

And homework.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

I guess that is reasonable.

 

 

 

BURTON tries to pull lose her hand, but ZELNICK has it clasped tight. She tries a second time and this time he lets it go.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Then I shall see you at Seven Sharp.

 

 

 

With that BURTON salutes, turns about and heads back down the mountain. The camera CUTS back to ZELNICK who is just watching her walk away.

 

 

 

 

 

ACT 2

 

EXT. UNZERVALT COLONY - EVENING

 

 

 

There is the steady babble of voices, trading or merely talking, from behind the camera. On shot however there are only trees and just coming into shot is Zelnick. In the background the pale blue sky has been replaced with a reddish orange. As Zelnick walks on the camera PANS to follow him, as it rotates a completely different environment is transmitted as the colony appears. There are numerous huts made from wood, stone and even the odd mud building, there are washing lines, still ladened with clothes, and people outside talking, chatting and (As with everything like this) a woman shaking out a blanket. The ground has been cleared, with leaves in small piles on either side of the walk way. Above is a canopy that just touches, hiding any trace from orbit (Its more for the psychological benefit). Wandering down the streets, nuzzling at the leaf piles there are Ortogs and most buildings seem to have a small field with blue flowers growing in dense formation. A couple of hundred metres along the path way there is a slightly ornate fountain with a group of teenagers hanging around it.

 

 

 

It is this fountain and its teenagers that ZELNICK heads for, ignoring everything around him. When the women and smaller children see him coming they scurry away, the men folk watch with contempt.

 

 

 

 

 

As he nears the fountain the Camera cuts to a closer position, just behind and off to the side of ZELNICK. The group of teenagers, all looking older, approach him. Meet STAN, BOB and RINGO LIEBERMANN, as well as HARRY HAWKINS. The triplets speak as an intuitive group, almost as though they had some kind of esper connection between each other. HAWKINGS is more silent...He is RANDs Personal Assistant and as such despises ZELNICK.

 

 

 

LIEBERMANN TRIPLETS

 

Hey Zelnick!

 

We thought you were going to miss it!

 

Rand says...

 

 

 

HAWKINS

 

Rand wants to take you on. Now time.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

Impossible.

 

 

 

 

 

LIEBERMANN TRIPLETS

 

He is back on his feet!

 

Ready for you this time!

 

Knock his block off!!!

 

 

 

HAWKINS

 

Shall I tell him you libixxed out?

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

I only said impossible, because he can't beat me and will never win.

 

 

 

The camera PANS (In fast motion) so that ZELNICK is facing the Camera. Behind him another boy has appeared. This is Lieutenant IOSPH RAND, grandson of the Infamous Captain Rand. He is wearing a pristine white Star Control uniform. If examined closely the sewing marks can be seen, where it has been ripped on many occasions. In his left hand is some kind of large metal cube.

 

 

 

RAND

 

I think you are supposed to address your taunts to me...That is something you would have learnt if you ever turned up to school.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

Whatever you say Lieutenant,

 

 

 

RAND

 

One day I will make you call me that every hour on the hour, and then you will be sorry.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

I think, if that day ever comes, we shall all be sorry.

 

 

 

LIEBERMANN TRIPLETS

 

Oooooo

 

Ahhhhh

 

KNOCK HIS BLOCK OFF!!!

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

You heard my fans, are you ready to go?

 

 

 

RAND

 

Anytime.

 

 

 

There is a pause.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

You have to come over here, Lieutenant...Remember.

 

 

 

RAND sheepishly abandons his tough guy stance and approaches the other side of the fountain. The Camera zooms out and follows him together, so that by the time he arrives at the other side the camera has a view of both combatants. ZELNICK sighs, puts his hand in his own pocket and pulls out a similar, but shinier cube. He then tosses the cube up in the air.

 

 

 

RAND

 

You inhuman monster!

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

Grow up, your daddies cube is in good hands...now.

 

 

 

ZELNICK slaps the cube down on the side of the fountain and depresses the top section. RAND does likewise on the other side. The water tremors slightly before two water ships form and begin hovering above each cube. The scene FREEZES, the shot splits and the cameras ZOOM to both ships. Below each ship there is a Green Bar and a Red Bar, indicating health and battery power. ZELNICK has a YEHAT TERMINATOR while RAND has a supped up EARTHING CRUISER.

 

 

 

The ships hover for a moment before ZELNICKs TERMINATOR screeches towards RANDs CRUISER. But it does not open fire. The CRUISER responds with a volley of missiles. The TERMINATORS shield glows for an instant each time the missiles get close and then opens full fire on the slow CRUISER. The TERMINATOR then flies though the watery wreckage of the CRUISER. The wreckage reforms as an ELUDER. The TERMINATOR rushes an assault as the ELUDER lines up for a strafing run.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

Oi, Lieutenant, the Eluder is meant to elude...the clue is in the title!

 

 

 

The ELUDER fires a full burst, which the TERMINATOR takes direct to its hull before unleashing its twin barrels, and then flying though the wreckage, again. The final iteration is an SKIFF. Almost instantly the SKIFF loses cohesion, but on the other side of the fountain another SKIFF forms (The camera BLURS between the two), but that one is almost immediate deformed as well. Then the SKIFF comes in with a sudden attack against the TERMINATOR, which, already weakened from the ELUDER, explodes fantastically.

 

 

 

RAND

 

Its called the Eluder-Skiff strategy, look it up some time you hack!

 

 

 

The TERMINATOR reforms as a BOOSTED POD SHIP.

 

 

 

RAND

 

Haha, you screwed that one up didnt you!

 

 

 

The SKIFF comes in for an immediate attack, scoring hits straight away, and then colliding with the POD SHIP, causing massive damage to the thin walled vessel. But then something happens. The POD SHIP launches a double attack, first repairing the damaged wall, and then firing a PLASMID. The explosion reduces the PODSHIPS health to 4, but destroys the SKIFF completely.

 

 

 

RANDs block electrifies, zapping RAND to the floor.

 

 

 

 

 

LIEBERMANN TRIPLETS

 

Wow

 

That was amazing!

 

You knocked his block off!!

 

 

 

The camera CUTS to inside one of the buildings. Through blinds Captain Burton is watching the battle outside, the camera stays focused on the outside though.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Impossible! I trained Rand myself... I wonder if he really does have the skills he claims.

 

 

 

Outside ZELNICK walks over the RAND and places his foot on his chest, then twists his ankle so that the white suit is stained and ripped.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

I will need to do something about that attitude though. No Captain can act like that after defeating an opponent and expect to get away with it.

 

 

 

CUT back outside.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

Just remember this next time you think about throwing your weight around you waste of good meat.

 

 

 

ZELNICK grabs RAND by the collar and throws him into the water. The LIEBERMANN TRIPLETS cheer, while HAWKINS sighs that he is wasted on RAND. ZELNICK then grabs RINGO (The oldest, by three minutes) and walks off with him

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

Come on, Ill show you a good time!

 

 

 

ACT 3

 

INT. ZELNICKs HOUSE MORNING

 

 

 

The house is virtually empty except for quite a number of bottles, one passed out teenager (RINGO), and one ZELNICK, sitting hard against the wall, looking out the window. The camera is his eye line. He has a bottle in his hand, which he looks down at. Its pretty dark in the house but the label is illuminated. The label says Paris Special Reserve, 2112.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

It must have been a pretty uneventful year, if this is anything to go by.

 

 

 

Somewhere in the distance a bell strikes six times and then three times in a different tone.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

Oi, you, get up.

 

 

 

ZELNICK throws something across the room, which shatters against the wall. RINGO keeps on sleeping.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

Stuff ya then.

 

 

 

ZELNICK lurches up, puts his hands out for the wall.

 

 

 

CUTS to the class room, ZELNICK is sitting in his seat, surprisingly enough he isnt drunk.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

Hey, Miss, where is everyone else?

 

 

 

BURTON

 

I have given the others two weeks off while I focus on you for a while. It seems only fair to give them the same breaks in life that you have had.

 

 

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

So its just you, and me.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Yes Zelnick, very good, you have just shown basic reasoning skills, and for that we can skip this lesson and test something else.

 

 

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

Miss?

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Follow me, quickly now.

 

 

 

BURTON leads ZELNICK outside, then turns to face him. The camera follows them and then watches.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

What are you, Zelnick?

 

 

 

Before he has time to respond she punches him in the jaw.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Man or mouse?

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

Are you insane!

 

 

 

BURTON

 

You better hope not or you are going to be in a lot of pain by the time I am done.

 

 

 

As BURTON comes in for another jab ZELNICK kicks her sharp in the knee.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

AHHHH £$. How could you attack a woman of my age!

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

You told me to defend myself; I assumed that you were ready for a counter attack.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

There are some things you just dont do, no matter what the circumstances.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

You adapt yourself to meet the circumstances; not the other way around.

 

 

 

ZELNICK extends a hand to help BURTON up. She attempts a full body charge. But ZELNICK grabs her beneath the shoulder and brings her up and then down to the ground, using his weight to keep her down.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

It is a greater challenge to have skills but not use them, to grow beyond yourself.

 

 

 

BURTON thrusts up under ZELNICKS guard, into his ribs. But he remains where he is, instead shifting more of his weight to keep her down, while using his now free arm to grab her wrist and bend it back.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

There is no point in having skills if you do not use them to your advantage.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

I can see you are skilled but have you considered this...

 

 

 

ZELNICK suddenly goes rigid, when he falls off of her there is a taser in her hand. The camera moves up towards her face.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

I can see this is not going to be as easy as I had hoped.

 

 

 

CUT to the class room. ZELNICK is dosing in his chair when there is an almighty thwack which wakes him. The camera PULLS BACK to show BURTON standing over him with a large ruler in her hands.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Mister Zelnick, sleeping during this lesson is paramount to not attending and if I catch you doing it again I will not talk to Professor Farnsworth. Is that understood?

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

Yes Maam.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

I have been meaning to ask you something about that. Why did you not fight back when you were running from Professor Farnsworth last night?

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

I didnt want....There was no point.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Why was there no point?

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

I knew he was not a real threat; so there was no reason to respond.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Then why did you attack Ioseph Rand yesterday after you had beaten him at Battle Ships.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

Rand is a danger to everyone with intelligence; he does not deserve to live.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Then why did you not kill him?

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

There are some things you just dont do, no matter what the circumstances.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Surely you should adapt to meet the circumstances, not the other way around.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

Sometimes the circumstances are more complicated than it would appear at first glance. Now do we have a lesson?

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Mister Zelnick! Are you the teacher of this lesson? Are you a qualified member of Star Control? Do you have any authority? No. You are my student and I decide what will happen and when. Now open your book at page fifty three and recite from line two four nine onwards.

 

 

 

BURTON turns around. The camera CUTS to her face, which is now smiling.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

There will be a test in twenty minutes.

 

 

 

ACT 4

 

INT. PRECURSOR COMPLEX EVENING TWO WEEKS LATER

 

The camera GLIDES down the rock face, revealing an aged man standing next to a console. This is KILGORE, an old professor type, useless for manual labour, but more tolerant than FARNSWORTH, as well as being second most superior science officer after FARNSWORTH. The computer console is reminiscent of 70s Super Computer, but has an untranslated keyboard. The camera follows him.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

At ease Kilgore.

 

 

 

KILGORE, unstartled, raises his head.

 

 

 

KILGORE

 

Huh, what?

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

SHE SAID, 'AT EAST!'

 

 

 

KILGORE

 

Not so loud! Im tired not deaf...*Mutters* Youth today, when I was growing up we wouldnt have talked to our elders like that.

 

 

 

KILGORE salutes BURTON, then turns to remove the latch on the gate and pushes it open allowing entry to the main cave.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

I need you to take Zelnick to see Jules. He wont be happy but tell him that Zelnick might replace him if he doesnt.

 

 

 

BURTON winks at ZELNICK, after two weeks intensive training with her he is filled, even more than usual with confidence. KILGORE takes ZELNICK by the arm, more so to lean on him as he walks rather than to guide him into the cave. The cave ceiling high above, they walk down a path toward another latched gate. Abandoned research gear litters the caves like trash. Only a few dedicated individuals still work in these caves. KILGORE pushes the gate open to announce their arrival. The camera GLIDES up to give a more inclusive view of the site before CUTTING to ZELNICKs POV.

 

 

 

KILGORE

 

You like computers- and machines, yes? Ive seen you snooping around, watching the Jules and the engineers work... I've heard your programming fundamentals are quite impressive as well.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

Thank you...-Sir.

 

 

 

KILGORE

 

See, manners arent so hard, are they. But I only complimented you because it makes no difference. Jules doesnt let ANYONE near his machines.

 

 

 

ZELNICK turns to look around. FARNSWORTH is standing on an elevated deck facing an alien console. He turns around for a split second.

 

 

 

KILGORE

 

Well, its not worth my life to hang around, so long kid.

 

 

 

KILGORE leaves ZELNICK at the base of the platform, a set of terraced platforms lead to the highest deck.

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH turns to look down at ZELNICK standing at the base of the terrace.

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH

 

This work is very important and I really cant afford to waste any more of my time giving you a test. You see that machine over there...

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH vaguely indicates a machine with his thumb, over his shoulder.

 

FARNSWORTH

 

Its a precursor coffee machine, or so the records say. Get me a cup.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

Thats not really what I came here for. Sir.

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH turns around and looks hard at ZELNICK for a minute.

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH

 

With fine words a good man you do not make. You are going to have to do a lot more than that to impress me.

 

 

 

ZELNICK

ZELNICK

FARNSWORTH

 

They were advanced, not gods. You cant send computer signals wirelessly, its not like radio, there would need to be thousands of kilobytes being sent every second to get a computer to work wirelessly....And they said you were a genius...

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

But sir, we use...

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH

 

Abubut! Do as I say or get out.

 

 

 

ZELNICK shakes his head and then walks over to one of the consoles. The console has some strange symbols on but the audience translation is MASTER CONTROL

 

 

 

ZELNICK

 

Professor I think I have found the Master Control unit.

 

 

 

Cuts to the terrace, so that FARNSWORTH is in the foreground and ZELNICK is in the fuzzed background.

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH

 

Then by all means turn it on...*quietly* The sooner he realises it isnt as easy as it looks the better.

 

 

 

The Camera refocuses on the background, where ZELNICK is pressing a few buttons. Then he stops. Then the building starts shaking.

 

 

 

EXT. UNZERVALT COLONY - NIGHT

 

 

 

We CUT to BURTON sitting near the fountain looking up at the alien night sky.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Where are you Chi... you promised.

 

 

 

Then the ground starts shaking.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

What the....Zelnick!

 

 

 

BURTON takes one last look at the night sky and then beings calling out

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Emergency stations! Emergency stations! This is not a drill!

 

 

 

(REF: "Suddenly, the immobile machinery within the cave roared to life. Huge electrical arcs shot between massive electrodes, incinerating a wooden storage shack. Robotic vehicles began tearing across the cavern floor along pre-programmed paths - paths which led them right through several man-made buildings. A 30 meter tall crane-like machine detached itself from one wall and swiftly rolled through the cave, nearly crushed a group of panicked scientists. It was a miracle that no one was killed in the ensuing chaos as humans fled the caves in terror.")

PAN across the colony to see a destroyed settlement, with different bits and pieces being carted off by robots.

 

 

 

EXT. RANDOM PART OF THE FOREST DAYBREAK

 

 

 

ACT 5

 

Many of the colonists are huddled together in the bric-a-brac of the forest, around them trees are being cut down by robots. ZELNICK and FARNSWORTH finally come jogging up after a few atmospheric shots.

 

CUT to BURTONs POV

 

 

 

BURTON

 

What's going?! What'd you do?!

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH

 

I'm not-- calm down--

 

 

 

BURTON

 

I swear, I'll throw you in the stockade myself!

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH

 

Look, I've activated the primary function- it's building something, it's a Factory!

 

 

 

BURTON

 

For what?!

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH hastily looks around to assess the activities of the robots.

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH

 

I think... they're building a starship.

 

 

 

BURTON's eyes light up, loosening her grip. Then recognition kicks in and she tightens the grip again.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Think?

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH

 

We'll need to check when it is further along. This is a massive breakthrough.

 

 

 

As BURTON turns with the look of utter bliss on her face she sees. several people gathered in different areas that the robots seem to be avoiding. A fit and capable man in his late 30's hustles toward BURTON. Meet LUIGI, a charming but somewhat ugly Italian face looking at BURTON, excited more so than worried. He pulls a cap from his back pocket and hands it to BURTON. BURTON brushes it off and pulls the commander's cap snugly over her head.

 

 

 

LUIGI

 

That's better!

 

 

 

LUIGI, disregarding the rumbling, stands straight and gives a proper salute. BURTON points to the cave.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Gather up a small team, we're going to go in.

 

 

 

LUIGI runs off, darting in between the busy machines toward different isolated groups. BURTON waves her arms at another person in one of the huddled groups to get his attention, and then she points toward the mountain, where no machines seem to be working.

 

 

 

We CUT to ZELNICK, who is already jogging to the foot of the mountain. We CUT to LUIGI and two other men (REF: names list) running toward BURTON, who then moves at an alarming pace toward the cave entrance.

 

 

 

ACT 6

 

INT. CAVE - DAY

 

 

 

We FOLLOW BURTON and team as they carefully walk through the cave. BURTON points to her ear and then to the ceiling in a military fashion- indicating to the others to be aware. A service robot, alerted by the team, approaches, BURTON and team stand still, LUIGI begins to pull a mundane firearm from his belt. A flickering wave of light scans the startled group, and the robot leaves to continue working. BURTON and team begin to move by the robots less in fear and more in curiosity. As they make their way inside the main cavern, they see a group of robots assembling the spine of something...

 

 

 

LUIGI

 

Either she is a Star Ship, or she is a Cathedral for our slaughter. (Doesnt work in an Italian accent does it?

 

 

 

ACT 7

 

EXT. UNZERVALT COLONY - DAY

 

 

 

We CUT to BURTON and team approaching the scared colonists near the mountain- the noise and vibrations are very slight. She holds her hand out to gather their attention. FARNSWORTH walks up to her and BURTON nods. The colonists are mix of fear and anger, with children primarily being occupied by excitement. The colonists all voice concerns over each other, none that BURTON can comprehend. She stands before the colonists; arms outstretched signalling for them to calm down.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

The machines are safe! Just let them be and don't get in their way. They are NOT here to hurt us.

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH tugs on BURTON's arm to get her attention. FARNSWORTH whispers something into BURTON's ear, which then rolls her eyes and nods.

 

 

 

BURTON

 

Jules, please-- why don't you explain what's going on to everybody.

 

 

 

FARNSWORTH

 

I have some important news!

 

Two hundred millennia ago, the Precursors were once the dominant species in our portion of the galaxy. They have left many trinkets and oddities across the stars for other sentient races to discover and use. At times, they have been used to harm us. But never has such an amazing and large deposit of Precursor equipment been discovered in one place before, and never has the full scope of their importance in this galaxy been understood. We, Corridor Nine, sent by Star Control High Command with the Greatest of Secrecy... Have uncovered the greatest discovery this side of sliced bread! I can say with all certainty that we have all now made a giant leap forward...But we must now make another leap forwards, we must now prepare to crew a great star ship, to bring the alliance back together and to defeat the Ur-Quan and their Hierarchy of Battle Thralls! With any luck, the might of the Precursors will prevail and once more all of sentient life will be free from the Ur-Quan threat!

 

We will prove that our cause is just. This ship is our Vindicator!!

 

 

 

We CUT to A SCRIPTWRITER sitting high up on the mountain. He looks puzzled. With the howling of concerned and excited colonists in the background he ventures forth some point of logic lost in the maelstrom.

 

 

 

SCREENWRITER

 

Vindicator? What happened to Tober Moon?
