Best way to make a pure mage is to use wind strike up until you can use fire strike, then fire strike all the way. Fire strike gets more exp per gp, so it is a better choice then fire bolt. Alot of people will tell you to do the curse spells, but you get no hp exp with them. Not much point in making a pure if everybody can one-hit you.
