Junkieman
Hi everyone. I've had a router for a fair while now(6 months) and use it to share my broadband between computers in my house. Theres currently three computers, our hallway computer(call it hallway), our laptop using a wireless card(call it laptop), and my brother's computer(call it john). hallway and john are wired in, laptop is wireless. Now I tried shortly after getting it to network them so that i share files and resources(printers etc) between them, without much luck at all. hallway has a printer connected to it(laser mono) and john has a colour inkjet on it. Laptop has nothing. There is no hubs or nothing, just all 3 computers connected into the router, which is then connected to the modem. I've also set the router to give each specific local IPs too when they connect. Now, what i need is for someone nice who understands my situation to help me out and let me know how I can get my computers to see each other somehow and share files etc(apparently its something to do with IP routing, dunno much about it). I know a bit about computers and stuff, but I'd appreciate it simple. I think im a quick learner, I might be wrong, no ones a good judge of themself. Thanks people for reading, and helping if you can.
taquar
im thinking you might have to get a wireless router and disconnect one of the printers because it must be seeing both printers and doesnt register which one to use. hope it helps but i doubt it Finally retired from RS. It's been a good 4 or 5 years.
Junkieman
anybody know anything about home networking through a router?
Collective
Google knows everything. Once all your computers are connected to the router (either wirelessly or with cables), and they have a stable internet connection, read this tutorial. If you have specific questions then ask here, but I doubt anyone is going to spend the time typing out an entire tutorial on Windows networks for you. Junkieman
I found that site through google and followed some steps, thats how i first tried to network it and it didnt work. Although it seems to be a slightly different tutorial to the one I saw on that site, so I'll try it. Thanks.
Collective
If that doesn't work, try these: - Turn off any firewalls you have on each computer. - Make sure all the computers are in the same workgroup. - Make a note of the IPs of each computer, then, from Command (Start -> Run -> command) try pinging the other computers using the ping command, e.g: ping 192.168.2.3 - Also in the Command prompt type "ipconfig /all" and paste the information about a couple of your computer's connections. Hannibal
I'm assuming at least one of the pc's runs Windows XP? In that case, you can use the network configuration wizard thing, and have that make cd-roms for older windows machines to autoconfigure them :)
Junkieman
Yep, two on XP and one on 98. I tried the configuration wizard before anything, but it didnt seem to help anything at all. I don't know if it can be configured for router usage(it seemed to me to be about making one computer a gateway or something). I'm still trying to find my xp cd at the moment to install the NetBeui. The method I had tried before was sharing through TCP/IP.

There's an internet connection sharing wizard as well as a home network setup wizard :) (Start > Control Panel > Wizard Network Setup) (actual names may differ, my Windows is in Dutch...)
