Nagle's algorithm & Runescape

Featured Replies

I was [bleep]ing around with TCP/IP tuning tonight and I came across something I had never heard of before: Nagle's algorithm.

Apparently, it can have a significant effect on latency as it purposefully delays packet transmissions in order to increase bandwidth. It does this at the expense of latency.

In all the years I have seen people mention ways to fix lag, I have never ever seen this algorithm mentioned. Apparently Windows users can disable it through registry changes (search for "Nagle" to get to the section).

Has anyone here actually tried this and can you confirm /deny any improvements in latency?

Hmm... I'm going to mess with this. Since rs is low-bandwidth, TCP_NODELAY might be an option. However, i use the client, not browser, so not sure if it has it built in or not. I'll get back to you on it if i find anything interesting ~.~
