BlackBerrys and the Internet

Featured Replies

Can someone tell me how the internet works on a BlackBerry? Is the service provided by the phone company, and the internet can be accessed anywhere you have phone service? Or is it more similar to a laptop having a wireless internet card and can only pick up internet from "hotspots?" Thanks in advance.

They use the cell phone network for internet access.

The ability to access the Internet from you BlackBerry, depends on your provider. I've used both a 7100T TMobile BlackBerry and a 7130e Verizon BlackBerry in the United States.

With TMobile, you can almost always access the Internet if you can get a cell signal (as long as you have 2 bars). Verizon seems to have a much broader cell coverage, but the Internet access only works when you can access their 1XEV (high-speed) or 1X (lower-speed) networks. In more rural areas, your BlackBerry may be on the 1x (lowercase "x") digital network which will not allow access to the Internet or your email (but you can still get calls). In those rural areas, I generally could even get a cell signal with TMobile.

Hope that helps.
