Well, first off I'd like to point out black dragonhide has better stats in some ways, as does Karils armour. Although, black dragonhide doesn't require repairing, and in my opinion makes it more valuable.

 

 

 

As for the bow/crossbow question, Karils crossbow hands down. Much more power involved, although, for training the way to go is a magic short bow, Karils is more used for specail occasions, such as the Fight Caves. And bolt racks are really pricey, so use them sparingly.
