I really need help with the shanty pass area! What does everything shanty sells do in there?!

Well first off, to enter the desert you need to buy a Shantay pass, so that is a must. The second most important thing is water! You need to have filled waterskins in your inventory, or else you will get damaged while in the desert. If you run out of water, you can use a knife on certain cacti to refill some of your waterskin. All the desert clothes are completely optional, but they drastically reduce the need for waterskins, so you stay longer in the desert with less water.
