I've lost my dramen staff, can anyone tell me how to get it back? Thanks

i keep getting a metal key after attacking the mercenary captain, but it doesn't work on the jail door. So, out the window I go and climb up the rocks and back into the entrance only to be taken back to jail. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, jen
