Ummmm, depends what you're looking for: Instant gratification and fun: Road Rash or NBA Jam. Storyline and gameplay: Shining Force or Contra: Hard Corps. Vectorman is a good intro to Sega Genesis games.

Vectorman 1 & 2. Road Rash 1 & 2. NBA Jam. Toe Jam and Earl. Golden Axe. Shining Force (One of the few RPG's for the Genesis) Contra: Hard Corps. Earthworm Jim. To name a few, and some of my favorites that I own.
