Well, going with your view and combining with mine, some people have a harder time dealing with their problems due to chemical imbalances in their brains. I don't walk on eggshells around anyone I know who has depression, I'd have to be silent in my house and careful with a few of my friends if depression meant they couldn't take jokes or they're too weak to take bad news. That's not what it's about. And paying a counselor helps some people, my mom sent me to one a couple summers back because I spent so much time alone, I had changed my eating habits drastically, and she thought it related to the divorce between her and my dad. It didn't work for me, but some people just like an outside source who won't judge them or share anything they say. The way you're denying depression could also be applied to eating disorders or addictions. Are you saying people can't be addicted to something, they're just telling themselves they need the drug? Are anorexic people just really insecure and need a boost of confidence from their friends? Are rehabs useless? I get that you place depression as a mindset, but some people, a lot of people, need help because their brain can't get out of that mindset.

Suicide is dumb, but depression is real. But if you wanna go tell a person with depression that they're lying for the attention, go ahead. Most of the people I know on depression medication or seeing counselors don't exactly advertise it though, so they're not attention hungry. Now, the emo people who act depressed as if it's a style and do it for attention are full of it most of the time. But the girl I know who works as a camp counselor during the summer and has a boyfriend, her use of depression medication probably isn't something she does just to gain attention. I understand a lot of people fall for the placebo effect and some would say depression meds are always placebos, but I believe in it.
