Before you leave this room, get the book by searching the desk. Also, you need to get the ruby key from the trash basket and after searching bookcase, use the ruby key on the bookcase to unlock a staircase to go to a bedroom. In the bedroom, you search the bed and disarm the chest, then open the bed chest for more notes and parts of keys. Then you go back downstairs and try the door. The door will show a number on it. That turned out to be the number of weights I needed to put on the statue in order to release the door mechanism. It turns out it is the difference between your weight and the number on the thermometer. The weights are found down on main floor in the little room behind the picture. Hope that helps.
