If you can't connect to the wifi and it's an open connection (no password) it probably has a MAC filter. This would be pretty easy to connect onto though. Find out the MAC of a wireless host and spoof that MAC onto your computer and you can connect.
The router for a schools network is probably not a 192.168 address as that is usually too small for a school network (254 hosts maximum). Try 172.16.1.0 or something similar in the 172.16.x.x range. Or type in ipconfig into the command prompt to get your ip address and it's usually the first address on the address space. For example if your address is a 172.16.1.30 the router is probably 172.16.1.1.
The router may not be accessible by a web interface to begin with as it may only be accessible from a serial port depending on the network configuration.
BTW if you need to get the local admin password it is very easy to do. There are many utilities you can find on Google to tell you the password.
Soon as you get the local admin password you can then start to explore the network and see how it works. Check for simple security hole like if the system is patched with the latest windows updates and out of date versions of popular programs that can be exploited like Adobe Flash. If there's a simple security hole that's not patched on the network you can pretty easily take the hole thing down with a pre-made virus. Such as my school's network still doesn't have the hole patched that the Conficker worm uses.
If you need to open the command prompt when run is disabled. Open notepad, type in "cmd[Caution: Executable File]" and save the file with .bat at the end and run it. This is a batch file that can be very useful/deadly.

I didn't say it's definitely going to happen in the next 4 days, I just said it could. Sure they may have been working since January, but there's still hope.
Also, things like this also have the habit of being overhyped scareware. It's not the first time it's happened, and doubtless it'll happen again. Sure, taking precautions is absolutely essential, but it wouldn't surprise me if the whole thing was just a hoax that creates a file called lol.txt on your desktop or something similar.
Most worms and viruses are way over hyped. They always say that this new virus is going to be a killer that going to infect millions and it usually does not happen.
Keep your system updated and have a good antivirus scanner and you will be fine.

IE8 gets a 20 on the acid3 test. It stops at 12 and then if you let it keep going or click around a few times it goes to 20. It's still way behind the other browsers: Firefox 3.1 bet3 gets a 94, Opera10 gets a 100, Chrome 2 beta gets 100, Safari gets a 99 or 100 depending on the time you run it. It's pretty sad that Microsoft wouldn't try harder to comply to standards when every other major browser is.
I'm a Firefox user but this is big news. It's a step in the right direction for web standards. I've noticed that it's faster than IE7 but it's still really slow.
I may switch to Chome because it's so fast, way faster than any other browser. It needs extensions like Firefox to really make me switch though.

I had taken my computer apart. Everything went fine until I went to reinstall the CPU, which was attached to the heat sink. Since I had to put a lot of effort on the heat sink to get in place, I bent the pins on the processor. I fixed those easily with a pocket knife, and then I pried the chip off the heat sink (which had been held on by some heat transfer compound). I placed the CPU in the holder thing without the heat sink thinking that there is no way that thing will get so hot so quickly. I turned my PC on and nothing came up on the monitor, so I thought I'd press down on the processor to make sure it was all the way down. Bad idea. That thing was EXTREMELY hot for being on after such a short amount of time. The compound I mentioned earlier had gotten on my finger, so the heat was held on my left middle finger for even longer, thus giving me a rather annoying blister.
Translated to always run the computer with a heatsink and fan. I'm surprised you didn't fry the chip running without a heatsink for even a second.

Spend $2000 on a computer and either save the rest or buy a car. Seriously, you don't need a $6000 computer. A $2000 (at the most) computer will play every game at high settings out right now and probably in the future.
If you want the fastest computer for the price, don't get a MAC, period.

Malwarebytes anti malware is a really good one. It has found and removed items that Adware and Spybot have not even detected. It's free which makes it even better.

IMO zune software sucks [bleep]. It actually isint that bad but sometimes its a real pain.
Ive never owned a ipod btw only zunes.

I like the Zune because it has fm radio, wireless syncing, and the option to buy songs over wifi which the ipod nanos do not have these features. You can also share songs and pictures between zunes but finding somebody else with a Zune is kinda rare :P . I have the 30GB version and it's pretty good.

What scanners are you using? I'm thinking they all didn't fully remove and you still have some left.

Add a 512 or 1gb stick of ram, it would improve performance massively.
Install and run the following programs.
CCleaner (untick the unused file extensions box on the registry function.
Auslogics Disk Defrag (runs about 5 times faster then the windows one)
Mike Lins Start-up panel (Disable any non essential programs, eg java update scheduler, msn, google update)
Depending on the usage of the PC in question it might be worth running a few ad/mal/spyware scans to see if there's anything extra adding to the issue.
If theres not printer attached and they don't plan on using a printer then disable the spooler service.
Perfect list but I also like to use Glary Utilities but it's not as user friendly as the others.
Have you scanned for viruses and spyware lately? Use a lightweight virus scanner like Avira Free.

It seems Microsoft is releasing 6 different versions of Windows 7. The beta test is Windows 7 Ultimate. The versions are: Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise, Ultimate. :shame: :shame: :shame:
Why is releasing different versions bad?
I rather not go into the different versions but consumers will only be choosing from 2 versions, Home Premium and Professional. Netbooks will be using Home Basic.
Why wouldn't the beta test be Ultimate? How else would they test all the features of all the versions?

I'm trying to partition my C drive and vista just won't let me, it greys out the box. Don't know much about partitioning so I don't have a clue what's stopping me. It's not an issue of there not being enough space as I know I have enough.

Protip from experience:
when replacing the heatsink, try not to break the pins that push into the motherboard to secure it

Those can be a pain to take off sometimes, especially on some of the oem boards that are crammed. You do know you need to turn them a half turn before they will unlock? I made that mistake before, always take your time and don't rush through things :lol: .
Another tip when removing a heatsink. If the heatsink is stuck to the processor by dried thermal paste, do not try to use force to separate them. Instaid, gently twist the heatsink back and forth and it will slowly loosen the heatsink from the processor. Or unlock the processor socket before removing the heatsink so the processor comes off with the heatsink so you don't bend any pins.

true, but if your only using the computer for things that will never require anymore than 3 or 4gb, its better to just have 4gb of faster ram.
Getting faster ram than DDR2 800 (or 1066 now a days) is usually a lot more expensive and you don't notice a performance increase over slower ram. Especially on Intel boards because the fsb is usually bottlenecking the ram.
My suggestion is DDR2 800 or 1066 (if your motherboard supports it) of 4GB of ram. You can always upgrade later to 8GB of ram and it will be even cheaper then.

AVG has a Spy-ware scanner in it, and picked nothing up. so to answer my question to your question thus solving the question, do you know of any powerful free spyware scanners that might pick up what AVG didnt?
All the ones I listed are completely free. AVG spyware scanner isn't very good and is not meant to replace other spyware scanners.

processor wise, its using all the RAM it can but its only giving little performance. could there be something wrong with either the RAM or is the processor commiting suicide?

Spyware is probably whats eating up your ram and cpu usage. 90% of the time the issue with a computer is software related.

I personaly don't like Macs and think they are overpriced for what you get but I would go with the Macbook over the Air.
The Air is horrible, no cd/dvd drive, no wired ethernet, one usb port, but look, it can fit in this envelope. That must make it good, right? I would go with a normal Mac over the Air anyday for portability, I like having the option to make cds or use a flash drive and a mouse at the same time.

Did you scan with Ad-aware which has a new version that came out last week. Did you also scan with Spybot and Malwarebytes with updated definitions? What anti-virus scanner are you using?

To Compfreak: Yeah, I live out in the country. That still doesn't mitigate the fact that I really should be able to SOMEHOW get the full 56K out of the modem, unless if it's something with the provider. Either way, it should be possible to "direct" the connection to give me more speed by optimization, it's just that I don't know which of these programs are trustworthy and which aren't, or even if any of them work. Care to help in that department? Oh, and nobody provides satellite, and I live in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains. Kind of rough for a signal to get out regardless. I don't live in the city, as you rightly guessed.
Satellite will work aslong as you can see the sky, so does wireless I believe, so see if you can get it. We had to as it was either wireless or satellite (which was too much, even with the Government rebate)

It's no where near 5 seconds. 1 second at the most, usually about 500ms (half a second), it's not good for gaming but neither is dialup. Satellite would have way better download speed than your dialup connection. Satellite would be at least 1mb/s (1000kb/s) compared to your less than 56kb/s.
Just google satellite internet providers and I'm sure somebody would serve you satellite. As long as you can see the sky you would be able to get satellite internet.

Dark, your getting exactly what you should be getting for download speed.
The speed test is saying your getting 215kb/s (kilobits) while you download at 25KB/s (kilobytes). It is 8 bits to a byte. It's still really slow but that is your true download speed.

Some more information would help.
Such as your computer specs, how you connect to the internet, your service provider.
Have you tried resetting your modem? To reset it unplug it from the wall for a few minutes. REset your router (if you have one) while your at it. Does this happen on any other computers in the house?

^ Once W7 is released possibly at the end of this year, I'm pretty sure that they'll be done with the graphics drivers. The beta obviously isn't meant for normal use, so it's no big deal.
I would think they should be released even before that. They should have learned from the Vista driver problems that you have working drivers for your products before the operating system is released. The drivers should take a shorter time to port because Vista and Windows 7 are a lot more similar than Vista to XP.

I hate you. I can't wait till I get Fios in my area. Verizon wired the lines last year and still no update when they will be ready to use. My dad lives 2 cities over and he's had Fios for a year. Comcast is horrible, they filter traffic on everything.

It's not dead pixels, what are the chances of a whole line of pixels just die? Pixels also don't die in a color, they go completely out and don't produce any image/color. They may be stuck, use the tool Joe linked to above.
Update your drivers before thinking it any hardware problem. I really hope you have tried turning it off and on again since this incident.
