  1. Just a little thought about using this type of system to organise trades ... could it make some trades look more suspect than they actually are since there would be no or limited in game chat? Particularly if someone is giving you an item or gp (loan or gift). Unbalanced trade along with minimal talking looks a bit suspect.

Otherwise, I think this is a good idea ... although I'm sure my wife would get too distracted with me talking to the computer to make it worth my while :ohnoes: !!

  2. Qeltar vs. Duke Freedom - 2 of the more literate and economic understanding tif users. Both of you impress me with your understanding and ability to communicate it, even if you disagree on some of the details.

Although I didn't read the whole article, or the full discussions between you both, ultimately we will not know how GE will truely affect the RS economy until it is released. Decisions around how it works could greatly change the effects. This may have already been said.

Keep it up guys, we'll take score once the GE is released

  3. it's a bad idea. for 1 it's not worth the extra time and expense of customer service and transaction fees to cover each payment.

there's a reason for keeping records and transaction "reciepts" etc. what your idea would do is create 31 times the work and no profit because the fees would not cover the amount of time spent and the transaction fees associated. and 5 dollars a month is barely anything. it works great as it is. if anything were to be added, possibly add a little packet, buyable in stores that sell video games on the shelf, what's contained is a set of numbers for a month's membership on a card (like a phone card) and a little introduction and game info and instructions on how to subscribe and also information for how to subscribe for a longer period. or you could just buy the packets every month. stores like best buy, and dvd rentals etc. could sell them. but again that would require more employees and time and work so ? maybe test market it. and i dont agree with your idea at all.

You're making assumptions on how it would work and be paid for.

You wouldn't be able to buy it in hourly lots, but in blocks of time. So I might pay for 10 hours @ 50c per hour = $5, and then use that time over 2 or 3 months. Sure, the $ amount is the same, but you might be saving $5 or $10 depending on how long you actually play.

I look at it pretty similar to how prepay mobile phones work. You pay for time, then get a top up when you're getting low.

I am certain that this would increase the number of members, as some have indicated that they would like this. Whether the increase would be justifiable for Jagex to implement this sort of thing is still very debatable.

  4. i can see that this could be a great idea although many people may just buy 1 hour on the weekend and then just stay on for several hours. :shame:

Probably not explained very well in my first post: the system should show a warning when 2 minutes time is remaining. That gives the player the opportunity to finish what they are doing (monster killing, etc) and get to a safe place. After the 2 minutes is up, they would be automatically logged out.

I am assuming that the system currently deals ok with players who logged out in a members area, then logging into a free area, maybe by home tele to Lumby or to next closest free area.

  5. Ohes noes! non opening box :uhh:

I tried what I though would be most obvious and tried to open it as a goblin...... sadly I can't transform outside of the dungeon so can't be a goblin at the box :(

    I think it's a Pandora's box type thing...... intresting

    Surely it's obvious what's in the box ... bird's eggs ...

But maybe [speculation]it's a hint at the new year update[/speculation]

  6. This would make a good debate if you broadened the subject a bit. After all, it's males who tend to cause wars, start fights, murder, hunt, use weapons, drive wrecklessly, abuse substances, abuse partners/relatives, etc...

Obviously women do these things too, but it's far less common in females.

Yeah, but how often is the war, fight, etc because of a woman? Therefore, even though the men don't return the wallet, it is actually because of a woman, so really it is the woman's fault. Pretty unfair to blame the guys. :-w

    P.S. - For those that don't pick it up, that's called a joke ...

  7. Here's my contribution.

  8. re: Co-operation

RS has no forced co-operation in place, just like it has no overall forced gameplay. It's part of what makes RS so unique and appealing to so many ... you can play the game as you wish.

To me though, I'd like to see more areas within the game where true team play is needed (a bit like BA needs a team), even though I agree that there are already good opportunities for those that like to play that way.

Edit: Ohh, first ever first post

  9. I'm glad this is getting some good discussion.

The idea in no way is designed to replace the existing monthly members subscription, but is designed to give some players a lower cost entry into members, almost as a trial to see how much they like it.

Per hour is actually easier to work out than per day or per week, because the day/week cutover is hard to define across different time zones. The monthly option also has this issue to a certain extent, but the payment automatically rolls over, so doesn't really affect anything. But a by day could easily see someone having a day deducted for being logged in for 10 seconds at the end of a session.

The cost should be large enough to still make the monthly subscription valid for a majority of players, but low enough to get enough gameplay in for the same as a monthly cost. 50c per hour would give you 10 hours of gameplay before you hit the $5 mark. Seems reasonable to me.

Oh, and the 'average' I used was just to put out an example.

  10. JaGex want money. They know you are not on the whole time but charge you for it anyway so they get more money. If people paid by the hour then they would make less money as people wouldn't be paying for say..when they're at work/school, sleeping, eating etc.. which they are currently doing now.

That's right, they do want money, which is why I think this would be a good idea. There would be some existing members who would be able to pay less using this system, but I'm certain that there would be many more free players becoming members because of this. It's a win-win to me. Plus some people will end up spending more than $5 per month on an hourly basis, and they'll probably become regular monthly subscribers at that point.

The key is to pitch the hourly rate at a high enough level to prevent most members from switching, but low enough to encourage free players to become members.

  11. And how would the decision be made as to how much an hour of gameplay in the member area actually costs?

Thanks, I completely forgot to add in an example of how it might cost. I'll edit the below into the first post in a sec.

    Monthly cost = US$5

'Average' playing time for members = 2hrs per day = 14hrs per week = 56hrs per month = rounded to 60 hours per month

    Hourly rate = $0.08

So if they charge 25c per hour, you can get in 20hrs of gameplay in a month. Personally I'd probably make it 50c per hour for 10hrs per month. That way the normal monthly membership is still better and it would prevent more members from switching.

I know that you are trying to make it easier for the player but I think that would be a pain to program.

I think the programming pain would be justified by the increase in members that I'd think they would get.

  12. In some ways this is part suggestion and part questionnaire, but I think (hopefully) it has some good discussion potential as well. Hopefully it hasn't been beaten to death before.

I will likely be a forever free player. The reason behind this is that I only randomly play RS, so some months I might be paying $9 per month (NZ dollars) for only one login. While I can pretty easily afford that (I'll just make my kids miss out on a couple of meals ), I can't justify it.

However, if I could pay for the actual time I play (per hour), then I might well be forced to make the switch. That way I pay for what I actually use.

I'd think this would also have good benefit to Jagex as well. I can see a lot of F2P people using this, and suddenly finding that they are spending more per month than a regular member subscription. Also, more free players will become members to try it out and then find it too hard to go back.

Sure there will be some programming to surround this (checking time remaining, warnings, etc), but the Jagex developers are pretty intelligent so could nail it pretty well.

Example of how the cost might be worked out

    Monthly cost = US$5

'Average' playing time for members = 2hrs per day = 14hrs per week = 56hrs per month = rounded to 60 hours per month

    Hourly rate = $0.08

So if they charge 25c per hour, you can get in 20hrs of gameplay in a month to equal the $5 flat rate. Personally I'd probably make it 50c per hour for 10hrs per month to equal the $5 flat rate. That way the normal monthly membership is still better and it would prevent more members from switching.

Do you think this is a good idea? If you are a free player, would you subscribe this way, or is your reason to stay a free player different? If you are a member, would you change to this way of subscribing?

    What are your thoughts?

  13. Why can't it be coins only?

Most of the players' don't need those stuff.

By selling those little amount of stuff takes time and worth little.

Coins is the best choice to save time and effort for everyone.

Randoms aren't designed to be money makers. They are there to slow down macros, and to give regular players something a little different in the game. I personally like my full mime. I drop almost every other bit of random event clothing.

The values you put above are excessively high as well. You only get 500gp from a mime/forested/drill sergent after getting all the clothes.

  14. The first real indicator of RS going 'down' (except for sudden collapse) would be the gradual decline in the number of servers available. That and a string of completely superfluous updates (i.e., updates that really add nothing to the game ... onces that stretched developers manage to get done in time).

GE will not ruin merchanting, although it may ruin the tactics that many currently use. Those that are smart about it (and probably really like the merchanting part of the game), will likely flourish quite nicely with GE. Those that just do it for quick gp will probably have to start doing something more useful.

  15. I agree with teatonev and qeltar, the cost of gathering raw materials (manually or by buying) is rarely taken into account.

Any statement of making xGP per hour really means "I have created xGP of unrealised value in a particular hour". It doesn't become realised value until the items are actually sold, and the gp/hour calculation can then only be made once the whole process is taken into account. Having a regular buyer / seller, or using forums only for trading, greatly minimises the ends of the process.

If you are a smart gp-focused skiller (i.e., not a 99-hunting skiller), you will be able to make the judgement call between the value gained from gathering vs. buying.

What the GE would provide is a consistent buyer of your product. A lot less need to even spend time on the forums, meaning more time to make your product.

  16. Based on your current levels, you need to mine:

    361,951 iron ore

    253,366 coal

    194,897 gold ore

or a combination of all 3.

    and you need to smelt:

1,035,454 iron bars (excl 50% failure rate calculation)

    739,610 steel bars

    575,252 gold bars

    (or combination)

    or smelt & smith:

345,152 iron bars (excl 50% failure rate calculation)

    235,331 steel bars

Iron will be the quickest way, even if you had to mine 600K iron ores to cater for the failure rate. You're still only looking at 2 ores per bar as opposed to 3 for steel.

Steel will give you better profit though.

Given that you are F2P, and want to make at least something out of this ... I'd suggest something like the following:

    1) Powermine 300K iron in SE Varrock mine, banking them all (10,715 trips to/from bank)

    2) Sell 200K to members for around 100gp each (5Mil)

    3) Buy 100K coal

    4) Smelt 50K steel bars (1,786 trips to/from bank)

    5) Smith into 10K steel plates (2K trips to/from bank)

    6) Buy 10K Nats and high alch for 1200 each (9Mil profit)

That'll get you 3/4 of the way to your mining goal and 1/5 on the way to your smithing goal.

Then decide if you want to mine your own coal or repeat the above. I'd probably look at mining your own coal and buying the iron at this point. Could even do it earlier if you wanted.

Mining will always be higher than smithing, so if you want to be done with them close together, you should make sure you don't spend your profits on other things but feed them back into buying ore

Timing-wise, I'd say the 6 months mentioned above would be very optimistic. Getting to 99 mining could easily take that long on it's own. Smithing could take another 18 months or more.

    Tip for quicker leveling

Get members for 1 month. Focus on completing the quests that give mining/smithing/selectable experience. Bound to save a good amount of time.

  17. ^^ Talk about Off topic ^^ :shame:

    In answer to your theory:

    No to RS3

What do you define as RS3?

In my personal opinion I think RS3 would be a download to acheive graphics like WOW but still be the same map and game.

Definition of what "RS3" would mean is I guess the point of the thread.

I actually doubt whether there would be a WOW-like-graphics version of RuneScape, because then it would cease to be RuneScape. The main premise of RuneScape is to make it playable anywhere you can get internet access and have Java installed. Would also cost a heck of a lot more for funky graphics and it might detract from the playability of the game. Also might blur the lines between RS and WOW too much.

I'm amazed that this is still on page 1! =D>
