jak722
Well first off, today I bought a wireless internet router in the hopes of setting up a home network. This is the model I bought: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductP ... _Id=136493 I have two computers at home. An old desktop PC and a new laptop. My internet connection is a highspeed DSL service from Bell Sympatico Canada. (Its speed is around 100 Mb/s and it connects by PPPOE) It also connects to the internet by a modem and requires a username and password to log into the internet. (Kinda like dial up) So anyway, I bought the router cause the guy from the store told me it can handle cabled connections and wireless connections at the same time. So I installed the software at both my Laptop and PC. Then I connected the ethernet cable of my modem into the router, and another ethernet cable from the router to my Desktop (and sometimes my laptop). Both times, I was not able to connect to the internet and I kept getting connection errors. It goes kinda like this: Connecting through WAN Miniport (PPPOE)... Error 678: The remote computer did not respond. For further assistance, click More Info or search Help and Support center for this error number. In short, I can't connect to my DSL in this order PC -> Ethernet Cable -> Router -> Ethernet Cable -> Modem HOWEVER, I can connect in this order PC -> Ethernet cable - Modem I can ALSO connect wirelessly on my Laptop with little problem... But even if I can connect via wireless, my desktop still doesn't connect to the internet... even if they are sharing the same router... (My laptop is wireless and my PC is cabled, but this one doesn't work) What should I do? #-o The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak. scorpus57
Well the thing is, you can't connect to your desktop via wireless if your desktop has no wireless card installed in it. So in short I believe that you want your desktop connected via wired through the router so you can have your laptop on wireless. If your router is wireless with no ports for cabled connection then you should connect like this: Wall -> Ethernet Cable -> Modem -> Ethernet Cable -> Router ----------------------------------|---------------------------------| --------------------------Ethernet cable---------------------Wireless ----------------------------------|---------------------------------| ------------------------------Desktop-------------------------Laptop If your router IS wireless WITH ports you should connect like this: Wall -> Ethernet Cable -> Modem -> Ethernet Cable -> Router -------------------------------------------------------------------/\ ------------------------------------------------------------------/--\ ----------------------------------------------------Ethernet cable--Wireless ---------------------------------------------------------/------------------\ ----------------------------------------------------Desktop--------------Laptop If both these ways fail PM me. ~~!~~ScOrPuS~~!~~
Collective
Make sure your ethernet connection is enabled and set to defaults (in Control Panel -> Network Connections), then try following this tutorial. Note that you will not need the PPPOE connection installed on your computer, the connection to your ISP will be managed by the router.
