Mods Closing threads b/c old threads were made

Recommended Posts

I locked that avatar thread for a few reasons. For starters, as Errdoth said, it was more of a one-time issue that the author needed to resolve. Once it was resolved, there was no reason to keep it open. A few weeks back we had a very large, popular thread about increasing avatar/signature sizes. After a certain point, Albosky raised the avatar limitations then locked the thread. Since we just had a big discussion about that and came to an agreement, it was locked.

And as I mentioned earlier, this is counterproductive to the actual goal of reducing replication. The next time someone wants to comment on that subject they will create a new thread and have their say, creating an additional load on the database (more so than simply one more comment in an existing thread). Then it will be locked, and so on and so on... Is there something wrong with this logic?

Here is a perfect example of the rampant AR here:

There is no good reason that thread should have been locked. None. I am sorry, but that is a perfectly reasonable discussion to have in a general forum.

Perfectly reasonable discussion? You are kidding right? He's asking what rs name you would choose and he went on to choose his own rs name. Thanks for picking out one of the most pointless posts on these boards to try and enhance your argument.

You say you are experienced with forums. Sorry but I would not like to visit any forum that rates topic like that as a 'reasonable discussion'

I'm sure most other users don't come here to discuss topics like that either.

Comment on the subject of his avatar being too big or about what the size of avatars should be?

Locking topics like that isn't counter-productive. Now leaving them open is when the rest of the posts added on are just reiterating points made earlier in the thread.

Thanks for the respect Phil, I'll be sure to show you the same in return. I would have liked to have commented on that thread as It took me many tries to come up with a Runescape name that was not supposedly taken. I think you need to work on your reading comprehension and exercise your sense of humour a little. This is a forum on Runescape, I think there should be at least a little flexibility in discussion, its not like we're deciding the future of the world here. Try and take yourselves a little less seriously.

Here is another perfect example of a valid comment for discussion that has been unjustly locked:

Yes, the thread title is all caps which is annoying and now against the rules here, but it is a new user and a simple reminder not to shout and a link to the rules would have sufficed. All locking that thread will do is serve to alienate a new user and potentially reduce your advertising revenue should that user choose not to return after having been treated like that.

Speaking of reiterating points and reading comprehension, how about re-reading my earlier posts to see why I would have wanted to post in that thread to help out other forum users. You also seem to have missed the entire point of the comment you replied to there.

I cannot emphasise enough the importance of reading comprehension and the fact that no one is perfect.

Did you happen to see how many threads were made about the update to Varrock? The user could have posted in an existing thread about the update to the graphics, instead he chose to make a new topic talking about some random point.

We do allow flexibilty in discussions but I think it's taking it a bit too far when saying we should allow every single pointless thread to run it's course, it just gives the image to new users that whatever they post in a new topic is fine, which it obviously isn't. We do try and keep the boards up to a decent standard. If you want to go and view and comment on threads like those then I suggest you have a look at the runescape official forums.

Did you in fact read my earlier point I made to you regarding that? How about you go and read what I said earlier before accusing others of not doing it.

Tip.It Moderators have the liberty to handle rule-violating threads on a case-by-case basis. While it is recommended that links be posted, when more pressing issues need to be tended to sometimes locking the offensive thread is the best solution at the time.

2.5 - Penalties

  • Users who break these rules may have their posts moved, edited, or deleted. Moderators are not required to note the reason for edit or removal of a post. Please direct your questions regarding the reason behind removal or edit of a thread to the board Moderator through a PM (private message). Habitual or severe violators may have their posting privileges removed, and their accounts and/or IPs suspended or may be permanently banned. Tip.It Moderators and Administrators will use their best judgment in deciding the most appropriate course of action. If you feel that any Moderator has made an inappropriate decision, please contact an Administrator.

As for the other issues discussed here...

In lieu of letting this thread become any more inflammatory, please address your concerns in accordance with the rules. The goal of the rules is to let users discuss these issues with the Administrative team so we can in turn communicate changes in policy wherever it is needed. Venting such frustration on the forums often leads to pointless nonconstructive ranting.
